Altars?

I have seen some posts that say Altars are unscriptural?Is this true?Could you please give me some verses?I go to Calvary Chapel and we dont have altars(although we do go up front to pray with the elders and pastors). My buddy in the church of God said he would never go to a church that didnt have an altar.I was just wondering if someone will help me out with this!God bless you all bros and sis's
