Bema Seat

JaySaved Apr 25, 2006

According to the website:http://www.according2prophecy.org/judgment-seat-of-christ.htmlA) What is the Judgment Seat of Christ? The Judgment Seat of Christ will be the judgment given by Christ to His Saints. At this judgment the saints of God will receive or lose rewards. The Judgment Seat of Christ will not be a judgment of condemantion or one of eternal damnation for those who lose rewards, but rather a rewarding for our service as Christians. Those who are blessed to receive rewards at this judgment will receive crowns and dominions of authority in Christ's Millennial kingdom. This judgment will only be for Christian. No sinners will appear at this judgment. All through the Scripture, Christ has promised rewards for those who overcome. The Judgment Seat of Christ will be the place where these rewards will be given to those saints who have overcome.1.) The Meaning of the Judgment Seat of Christ:The Judgment Seat is translated (Beam Seat). L. Sale-Harrison in his book, Judgment Seat of Christ, p.8 states:"In the Grecian games in Athens, the old arena contained a raised platform on which the president or umpire of the arena sat. Form here he rewarded all the contestants: and here he would reward all winners. It was called the "Bema" or "Reward Seat". It was never used as a judicial bench".As we will note through out our study, the Judgment Seat of Christ will not be a judgment of eternal condemnation, on those who lose rewards. They will still have the gift of salvation purchased for them by the Blood of christ. The Scriptures declare that in Christ there is no condemnation.I was wondering if anyone agrees with this definition of Bema Seat (Judgement Seat)? For myself, I can't find any scriptural support to say that the Bema seat is JUST for handing our rewards. How can he say that this was only a reward seat and never used as a judicial bench when the Bema (Judgement) seat is used in Acts 25:10 AS a judicial bench. Here are all of the instances of the Bema seat according to crosswalk.combh'ma Transliterated Word Bema Definition - a step, pace, the space which a foot covers, a foot-breath - a raised place mounted by steps - a platform, tribune - of the official seat of a judge - of the judgment seat of Christ - Herod built a structure resembling a throne at Caesarea, from which he viewed the games and made speeches to the people Bema is used in Matthew one time:Mt 27:19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. Bema is used in John 1 one time:Joh 19:13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. Bema is used in Acts eight times:Ac 7:5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child. Ac 12:21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. Ac 18:12 And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat, Ac 18:16 And he drave them from the judgment seat. Ac 18:17 Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things. Ac 25:6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought. Ac 25:10 Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest. Ac 25:17 Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth. Bema is used in Romans one time:Ro 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ Bema is used in 2 Corinthians one time:2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

THe Judgement Seat of Christ takes place at the Lord's comming as 1st and 2nd Thess. shows us. It is the jugement of believers. It is in regards to the reward of the Kingdom and it's issues are:The works of the believers, as to what sort they are, whether they be of gold, silver, and prescious stones, or whether they be of wook hay and stubble. Gold, silver, and precious stones refers to the Gold of the Divine Nature, the Silver of Christ's redemption, and the precious stones of the Spirit's work within us forming in us the attributes of Christ. Many will have their works burned, but they themselves shall be saved, yet so as through fire. The issue is the reward of the kingdom which those who have matured, which have suffered with Christ, which have gone on to grow in the Divine Life and who have labored to build up His body with the proper materials. The issue is the reward of the Kingdom, not eternal Life as those at this judgement seat already possess the Eternal Life of God.But this is a judgment refering to the Mellinial Kingdom which is for 1000 years, on this earth when those who are rewarded will reign with Christ for 1000 years. But for the rest, they have a part with all believers in the New Jerusalem in the New Earth which comes about after the 1000 years (Revelation 20, 21, and 22.The judgement seat of Christ is for beleivers, the Great White throne judgement at the end of the Melliniem is for unbelievers. And they are cast into the lake of fire. But for the believers, their judgement is at Christ's return and for reward and dicipline, not for eternal Life.Graftedbranch

Oh, the fire in my heart when I think of the coming Judgment and how the church today doesn't know or believe that they are going to be held accountable for things.YOU ARE NOT OFF SO EASY!Just because you have been saved does not mean that things are not expected of you. Your work for GOD our Lord is not yet done. It is not a means to make you happy. Joy comes out of it yes, but ask yourself what have I done for the kingdom of GOD today? You will find that you have done nothing and you have been asleep while your brothers and sisters have been fighting and dying and giving up in strife.Take up arms, for that Judgment Seat approaches quickly. Wear the armor of GOD and go.Thank you Brothers and Bless you for this thread. Praise the Lord, people need to know about the coming Judgment. In ChristScroggins

God bless you, Graftedbrach. In regards to the Bema Judgment Seat for believers, and end time events, you have said it all, better than anything I have read on this site yet.Praise God!SteverxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxGraftedbranc wrote:THe Judgement Seat of Christ takes place at the Lord's comming as 1st and 2nd Thess. shows us. Hi Jaysaved:This is the Scriptural reference to the Bema Judgment seat of rewards, found in 1 Cor 3:8-15"8. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. 9. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. 10. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13. Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: BUT HE HIMSELF SHALL BE SAVED; YET SO AS BY FIRE."God's word tells us that now, there is no condemndation, for those that are in Christ Jesus (who believe in Him as Lord):Romans 8:1-2"1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."THE ABOVE REVEALS TO US THAT ALL CHRISTIANS WILL NOT ATTEND THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT. WHY? BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN MADE FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH BY THEIR BELIEF IN THE WORKS OF JESUS CHRIST, AND NOT BY THEIR OWN WORKS!!!!!God bless,Stever

Here is where I am confused: I understand that 1 Cor. 3 speaks of testing of works for a Christian, but why do we automatically assume this will happen at the judgment seat of Christ (Bema seat)? Also, why do we differentiate between the Great White Throne judgement and the Judgment Seat of Christ (Bema)? Romans 14:9-11 9For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. 10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. 11It is written: " 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' "2 Corinthians 5:9-119So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.Revelation 20:11-15 11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Stever responds:

The Bible tells us that there is now no comdemnation for those(THAT IS US) that are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

I posted this some time ago, in response to a similar question by Dorcas. It is quite a long post, but is a full proof text from God's Word to make sure that we are all on the same page. Without Scripture to support our "opinions", we are lost. Forty years ago, this doctrine of the damned, the Great White Throne Judgment was understood by the Church. Why is that? Sound Doctrine is not taught anymore in our Churches. If you don't think that sound doctrine is important, do a word search using the King James Bible and see how often the word DOCTRINE appears. All of the newer versions have replaced DOCTRINE with other watered down words. The result has been the elimination and watering down of Christ's teaching, of Christ's DOCTRINE:

THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT:
ALSO CALLED THE JUDGMENT OF THE DAMNED

It is appointed unto men once to die. When a person dies that is not "in" Christ, they go to a place called hell. There they are tormented day and night in the flame. Then they are brought forth unto the resurrection of damnation. They are delivered up to the great white throne judgment. The books are opened, including the book of life. They are judged according to those things that are written in the books. They are judged according to their works. The Bible never mentions that there is any singing or praising at this judgment. The Bible does not mention any rewards being given at this judgment. It is the judgment of condemnation—the judgment of the damned.

Jesus Christ shall judge.

The heart is searched. Every work is brought into judgment. Every secret thing is revealed. Nothing is hid. Nothing shall be covered. Everything shall be revealed. Every secret word that was spoken in darkness shall be heard. Every word that was spoken, even in closets, shall be proclaimed. Every idle (or careless) word that was spoken they shall render account for it.

Many will try to justify themselves, but their iniquity shall condemn them. Even the rust of their gold and silver shall be a witness against them.

The Word shall judge each person. The Law is the strength of sin, and sin is the sting of death.

Moses will accuse. The men of Nineveh and the Queen of the South shall condemn. Other saints will be a witness against people in the judgment. Some appear to be judged more severely than others, according to the opportunities that they had.

Finally, the horrible and terrifying end: the nearly countless people from many generations shall be cast eternally into the lake of fire. Probably not a single person ever really understood that this place would be their final and eternal destiny. The "second death" is death and hell being cast into the lake of fire. There they shall stay, being tormented forever and ever, with no hope of ever being released. And there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth for time without end.

2-(Scripture)

There is now condemnation for those that believe not.
"HE THAT BELIEVETH ON HIM IS NOT CONDEMNED: BUT HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, BECAUSE HE HATH NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD"-Jn 3:18.

"HE THAT BELIEVETH ON THE SON HATH EVERLASTING LIFE: AND HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT THE SON SHALL NOT SEE LIFE; BUT THE WRATH OF GOD ABIDETH ON HIM"-Jn 3:36. 1. \t\t\t

"THERE IS THEREFORE NOW NO CONDEMNATION TO THEM WHICH ARE IN CHRIST JESUS, WHO WALK NOT AFTER THE FLESH, BUT AFTER THE SPIRIT. " Romans 8:1
\t
"BUT IF THE SPIRIT OF HIM THAT RAISED UP JESUS FROM THE DEAD DWELL IN YOU, HE THAT RAISED UP CHRIST FROM THE DEAD SHALL ALSO QUICKEN YOUR MORTAL BODIES BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLETH IN YOU. "Romans 8:11

"AND IF CHILDREN, THEN HEIRS; HEIRS OF GOD, AND JOINT-HEIRS WITH CHRIST; IF SO BE THAT WE SUFFER WITH HIM, THAT WE MAY BE ALSO GLORIFIED TOGETHER." Romans 8:17

"AND TO WAIT FOR HIS SON FROM HEAVEN, WHOM HE RAISED FROM THE DEAD, EVEN JESUS, WHICH DELIVERED US FROM THE WRATH TO COME." 1 Thes 1:10
He that does not believe on Jesus and does not believe God’s Word is ALREADY CONDEMNED. That condemnation will take many people to the great white throne judgment and the lake of fire.
The bible will judge the lost at the Great White Throne:

John 12:48 tells us that God's Word (the Bible) will judge the lost at the Great White Throne: " He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."---i.e "in the volume of the Book, it is written of Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hebrews 10:7

As a Christian I know that I will NEVER:

1. see condemnation
A. HE THAT BELIEVETH ON HIM IS NOT CONDEMNED: BUT HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, BECAUSE HE HATH NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD-Jn 3:18.
B.THERE IS THEREFORE NOW NO CONDEMNATION TO THEM WHICH ARE IN CHRIST JESUS, WHO WALK NOT AFTER THE FLESH, BUT AFTER THE SPIRIT. Romans 8:1

2. As a Christian I know that I am delivered from the wrath to come (Wrath= Great Tribulation, as well as Hell)
A. AND TO WAIT FOR HIS SON FROM HEAVEN, WHOM HE RAISED FROM THE DEAD, EVEN JESUS, WHICH DELIVERED US FROM THE WRATH TO COME. 1 Thes 1:10

3. As a Christian I know that since I believe in Christ that I will have everlasting life, and not suffer God's wrath-------"HE THAT BELIEVETH ON THE SON HATH EVERLASTING LIFE: AND HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT THE SON SHALL NOT SEE LIFE; BUT THE WRATH OF GOD ABIDETH ON HIM-Jn 3:36".

4. As a Christian I know that the Spirit dwells in me, the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, and that same spirit will raise me from the dead:
BUT IF THE SPIRIT OF HIM THAT RAISED UP JESUS FROM THE DEAD DWELL IN YOU, HE THAT RAISED UP CHRIST FROM THE DEAD SHALL ALSO QUICKEN YOUR MORTAL BODIES BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLETH IN YOU. Romans 8:11\t

5. As a Christian believer I know that I am a joint Heir with Jesus Christ, and that I will live again in a glorified body, just like Christ's:
AND IF CHILDREN, THEN HEIRS; HEIRS OF GOD, AND JOINT-HEIRS WITH CHRIST; IF SO BE THAT WE SUFFER WITH HIM, THAT WE MAY BE ALSO GLORIFIED TOGETHER. Romans 8:17 \t

John 12:48 tells us that God's Word (the Bible) will judge the lost at the Great White Throne: " He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."

3-NOW, A WARNING OF JUDGMENT AGAINST THESE PEOPLE
I TELL YOU, NAY: BUT, EXCEPT YE REPENT, YE SHALL ALL LIKEWISE PERISH-Lk 13:3,5. This is a strong warning. Judgment lies ahead.
THE LORD KNOWETH HOW...TO RESERVE THE UNJUST UNTO THE DAY OF JUDGMENT TO BE PUNISHED-2 Pe 2:9. Again a strong warning to the unjust that refuse to repent. Judgment lies ahead.
(For) WHEN LUST HATH CONCEIVED, IT BRINGETH FORTH SIN: AND SIN, WHEN IT IS FINISHED, BRINGETH FORTH DEATH-Ja 1:15.
The Scriptures ask, WHAT FRUIT HAD YE THEN IN THOSE THINGS WHEREOF YE ARE NOW ASHAMED? FOR THE END OF THOSE THINGS IS DEATH-Ro 6:21.
FOR HE THAT SOWETH TO HIS FLESH SHALL OF THE FLESH REAP CORRUPTION-Gal 6:8. Judgment lies ahead.
AND WITH ALL DECEIVABLENESS OF UNRIGHTEOUSNESS IN THEM THAT PERISH; BECAUSE THEY RECEIVED NOT THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH, THAT THEY MIGHT BE SAVED. AND FOR THIS CAUSE GOD SHALL SEND THEM STRONG DELUSION, THAT THEY SHOULD BELIEVE A (or the) LIE: THAT THEY ALL MIGHT BE DAMNED WHO BELIEVED NOT THE TRUTH, BUT HAD PLEASURE IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS-2 Thes 2:10-12. This is a strong warning to those of this generation that reject the Gospel and believe not the truth, but have pleasure in unrighteousness. They shall be sent a strong delusion from God so that, during the Tribulation, they will believe the lie and perish.
The Bible warns people, IF WE DELIBERATELY KEEP ON SINNING AFTER WE HAVE RECEIVED THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH, NO SACRIFICE FOR SINS IS LEFT, BUT ONLY A FEARFUL EXPECTATION OF JUDGMENT AND OF RAGING FIRE THAT WILL CONSUME THE ENEMIES OF GOD-Heb 10:26,27
God’s Word warns people, OF HOW MUCH SORER (or more severe) PUNISHMENT, SUPPOSE YE, SHALL HE BE THOUGHT WORTHY, WHO HATH TRODDEN UNDER FOOT THE SON OF GOD, AND HATH COUNTED THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT, WHEREWITH HE WAS SANCTIFIED, AN UNHOLY THING, AND HATH DONE DESPITE UNTO THE SPIRIT OF GRACE? FOR WE KNOW HIM THAT HATH SAID, VENGEANCE BELONGETH UNTO ME, I WILL RECOMPENSE, SAITH THE LORD-Heb 10:29,30. Again, a strong warning to those that were sanctified but have done contrary to the Spirit of grace—judgment lies ahead.
FOR I TESTIFY UNTO EVERY MAN THAT HEARETH THE WORDS OF THE PROPHECY OF THIS BOOK, IF ANY MAN SHALL ADD UNTO THESE THINGS, GOD SHALL ADD UNTO HIM THE PLAGUES THAT ARE WRITTEN IN THIS BOOK-Rev 22:18. Once more, a strong warning to those that would add to the Revelation—judgment lies ahead.
And those that committed the unforgivable sin, they shall also be at this judgment. It is written, WHEREFORE I SAY UNTO YOU, ALL MANNER OF SIN AND BLASPHEMY SHALL BE FORGIVEN UNTO MEN: BUT THE BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE HOLY GHOST SHALL NOT BE FORGIVEN UNTO MEN.
AND WHOSOEVER SPEAKETH A WORD AGAINST THE SON OF MAN, IT SHALL BE FORGIVEN HIM: BUT WHOSOEVER SPEAKETH AGAINST THE HOLY GHOST, IT SHALL NOT BE FORGIVEN HIM, NEITHER IN THIS WORLD, NEITHER IN THE WORLD TO COME-Mt 12:31,32; ref Lk 12:10; Mk 3:28,29.
4-JUDGMENT UPON THESE CITIES IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT
Jesus warned the cities that would not receive Him or those whom He sent that when the day of judgment came, it would be better for Sodom and Gomorrha or Tyre and Sidon than for them. Judgment has already come upon the cities mentioned; however, the "great white throne judgment" may also be alluded to here, when the people of these cities will face the final judgment.
It is written, Mt 10:14,15-AND WHOSOEVER SHALL NOT RECEIVE YOU, NOR HEAR YOUR WORDS, WHEN YE DEPART OUT OF THAT HOUSE OR CITY, SHAKE OFF THE DUST OF YOUR FEET. VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE FOR THE LAND OF SODOM AND GOMORRHA IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THAN FOR THAT CITY.
Mt 11:20-24-THEN BEGAN HE (Jesus) TO UPBRAID (or denounce) THE CITIES WHEREIN MOST OF HIS MIGHTY WORKS WERE DONE, BECAUSE THEY REPENTED NOT: WOE UNTO THEE, CHORAZIN! WOE UNTO THEE, BETHSAIDA! FOR IF THE MIGHTY WORKS, WHICH WERE DONE IN YOU, HAD BEEN DONE IN TYRE AND SIDON, THEY WOULD HAVE REPENTED LONG AGO IN SACKCLOTH AND ASHES. BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE FOR TYRE AND SIDON AT THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THAN FOR YOU.
AND THOU, CAPERNAUM, WHICH ART EXALTED UNTO HEAVEN, SHALT BE BROUGHT DOWN TO HELL: FOR IF THE MIGHTY WORKS, WHICH HAVE BEEN DONE IN THEE, HAD BEEN DONE IN SODOM, IT WOULD HAVE REMAINED UNTIL THIS DAY. BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE FOR THE LAND OF SODOM IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THAN FOR THEE.
Lk 10:12-15-BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE IN THAT DAY FOR SODOM, THAN FOR THAT CITY. WOE UNTO THEE, CHORAZIN! WOE UNTO THEE, BETHSAIDA! FOR IF THE MIGHTY WORKS HAD BEEN DONE IN TYRE AND SIDON, WHICH HAVE BEEN DONE IN YOU, THEY HAD A GREAT WHILE AGO REPENTED, SITTING IN SACKCLOTH AND ASHES. BUT IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE FOR TYRE AND SIDON AT THE JUDGMENT, THAN FOR YOU. AND THOU, CAPERNAUM, WHICH ART EXALTED TO HEAVEN, SHALT BE THRUST DOWN TO HELL.
5-A PERSON DIES, GOES TO HELL, AND IS TORMENTED
WHILE WAITING FOR THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT
When a person dies without Christ, they perish to a place called "hell." They shall remain there until they are delivered up to the final judgment, the great white throne judgment.

It is written, THERE WAS A CERTAIN RICH MAN, WHICH WAS CLOTHED IN PURPLE AND FINE LINEN, AND FARED SUMPTUOUSLY EVERY DAY...AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT THE...RICH MAN...DIED, AND WAS BURIED; AND IN HELL HE LIFT UP HIS EYES, BEING IN TORMENTS-Lk 16:19,22,23. Note, he perished to hell.

As mentioned previously, in Lk 10:12-15, Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum were named. Then it is written, THOU…SHALT BE THRUST DOWN TO HELL. Note, the people of these cities were thrust down to hell and shall stay there until they are delivered up to the great white throne judgment.

FOR THE TIME IS COME THAT JUDGMENT MUST BEGIN AT THE HOUSE OF GOD: AND IF IT FIRST BEGIN AT US, WHAT SHALL THE END BE OF THEM THAT OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL OF GOD? AND IF THE RIGHTEOUS SCARCELY BE SAVED, WHERE SHALL THE UNGODLY AND THE SINNER APPEAR?-1 Pe 4:17,18.
The answer is, those who die today without Christ shall appear at the great white throne judgment. (For) IT IS APPOINTED UNTO MEN ONCE TO DIE, BUT AFTER THIS THE JUDGMENT-Heb 9:27.

Once a person dies without Christ, they shall not be delivered up until the thousand years are finished.

BUT THE REST OF THE DEAD LIVED NOT AGAIN UNTIL THE THOUSAND YEARS WERE FINISHED-Rev 20:5

SO MAN LIETH DOWN, AND RISETH NOT: TILL THE HEAVENS BE NO MORE, THEY SHALL NOT AWAKE, NOR BE RAISED OUT OF THEIR SLEEP-Job 14:12.

BUT THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, WHICH ARE NOW, BY THE SAME WORD ARE KEPT IN STORE, RESERVED UNTO FIRE AGAINST THE DAY OF JUDGMENT AND PERDITION OF UNGODLY MEN. BUT THE DAY OF THE LORD WILL COME AS A THIEF IN THE NIGHT; IN THE WHICH THE HEAVENS SHALL PASS AWAY WITH A GREAT NOISE, AND THE ELEMENTS SHALL MELT WITH FERVENT HEAT, THE EARTH ALSO AND THE WORKS THAT ARE THEREIN SHALL BE BURNED UP-2 Pe 3:7,10.

(For) THE FIRST HEAVEN AND THE FIRST EARTH WERE PASSED AWAY-Rev 21:1.

6-THE JUDGMENT

Some say that a loving God would never condemn anyone to the eternal lake of fire. Those that say this neither believe or understand the Scriptures. Neither do they understand the overwhelming love of God as revealed in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. God, through His Son, Jesus, offered the greatest gift possible to mankind—the gift of eternal life. Those that refuse to receive the forgiveness of their sins through faith in Jesus Christ shall pay for their own sins. FOR THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH-Romans 6:23.

It is written, FOR THE LORD LOVETH JUDGMENT-Ps 37:28;
AND MERCY REJOICETH AGAINST JUDGMENT-Ja 2:13.

Know this, IT IS A FEARFUL THING TO FALL INTO THE HANDS OF THE LIVING GOD-Heb 10:31.

Those that have died without Christ, (they) SHALL COME FORTH...THAT HAVE DONE EVIL, UNTO THE RESURRECTION OF DAMNATION-Jn 5:29.

AND I SAW A GREAT WHITE THRONE, AND HIM THAT SAT ON IT, FROM WHOSE FACE THE EARTH AND THE HEAVEN FLED AWAY; AND THERE WAS FOUND NO PLACE FOR THEM. AND I SAW THE DEAD, SMALL AND GREAT, STAND BEFORE GOD; AND THE BOOKS WERE OPENED: AND ANOTHER BOOK WAS OPENED, WHICH IS THE BOOK OF LIFE: AND THE DEAD WERE JUDGED OUT OF THOSE THINGS WHICH WERE WRITTEN IN THE BOOKS, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS. AND THE SEA GAVE UP THE DEAD WHICH WERE IN IT; AND DEATH AND HELL DELIVERED UP THE DEAD WHICH WERE IN THEM: AND THEY WERE JUDGED EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS-Rev 20:11-13.
There appears to be a book of works and the book of life. Some also would say there is a third book, the Lamb’s book of life-ref Rev 21:27.

7-JESUS SHALL JUDGE
AND HE COMMANDED US...TO TESTIFY THAT IT IS HE (Jesus) WHICH WAS ORDAINED OF GOD TO BE THE JUDGE OF QUICK AND DEAD-Acts 10:42. BECAUSE HE HATH APPOINTED A DAY, IN THE WHICH HE WILL JUDGE THE WORLD IN RIGHTEOUSNESS BY THAT MAN (Jesus) WHOM HE HATH ORDAINED; WHEREOF HE HATH GIVEN ASSURANCE UNTO ALL MEN, IN THAT HE HATH RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD-Acts 17:31. IN THE DAY WHEN GOD SHALL JUDGE THE SECRETS OF MEN BY JESUS CHRIST-Ro 2:16.

8-HOW SHALL PEOPLE BE JUDGED?
FOR HE SHALL HAVE JUDGMENT WITHOUT MERCY, THAT HATH SHEWED NO MERCY-Ja 2:13.

9-WHAT SHALL JESUS DO? WHAT SHALL BE DONE AT THE JUDGMENT?
BUT HE THAT DENIETH ME BEFORE MEN SHALL BE DENIED BEFORE THE ANGELS OF GOD-Lk 12:9.
(For) THEY PROFESS THAT THEY KNOW GOD; BUT IN WORKS THEY DENY HIM, BEING ABOMINABLE, AND DISOBEDIENT, AND UNTO EVERY GOOD WORK REPROBATE-Titus 1:16.
(For) IT WERE BETTER FOR HIM THAT A MILLSTONE WERE HANGED ABOUT HIS NECK, AND HE CAST INTO THE SEA, THAN THAT HE SHOULD OFFEND ONE OF THESE LITTLE ONES-Lk 17:2.
I THE LORD SEARCH THE HEART, I TRY THE REINS, EVEN TO GIVE EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS WAYS, AND ACCORDING TO THE FRUIT OF HIS DOINGS-Jere 17:10.
(For) BEFORE GOD, NOTHING CREATED IS HIDDEN, BUT ALL THINGS ARE NAKED AND OPEN TO THE EYES OF HIM-Heb 4:13 JNT.16
FOR GOD SHALL BRING EVERY WORK INTO JUDGMENT, WITH EVERY SECRET THING, WHETHER IT BE GOOD, OR WHETHER IT BE EVIL-Ecc 12:14.
FOR NOTHING IS SECRET, THAT SHALL NOT BE MADE MANIFEST; NEITHER ANY THING HID, THAT SHALL NOT BE KNOWN AND COME ABROAD-Lk 8:17.
FOR THERE IS NOTHING COVERED, THAT SHALL NOT BE REVEALED; NEITHER HID, THAT SHALL NOT BE KNOWN-Lk 12:2.
FOR THERE IS NOTHING COVERED, THAT SHALL NOT BE REVEALED; AND HID, THAT SHALL NOT BE KNOWN-Mt 10:26.
THEREFORE WHATSOEVER YE HAVE SPOKEN IN DARKNESS SHALL BE HEARD IN THE LIGHT; AND THAT WHICH YE HAVE SPOKEN IN THE EAR IN CLOSETS SHALL BE PROCLAIMED UPON THE HOUSETOPS-Lk 12:3.
BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT EVERY IDLE WORD THAT MEN SHALL SPEAK, THEY SHALL GIVE ACCOUNT THEREOF IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT...AND BY THY WORDS THOU SHALT BE CONDEMNED-Mt 12:36,37.
TAKE HEED THEREFORE HOW YE HEAR: FOR WHOSOEVER …HATH NOT, FROM HIM SHALL BE TAKEN EVEN THAT WHICH HE SEEMETH TO HAVE-Lk 8:18.
10-WHAT SHALL PEOPLE SAY OR DO AT THE JUDGMENT?
MANY WILL SAY TO ME IN THAT DAY, LORD, LORD, HAVE WE NOT PROPHESIED IN THY NAME? AND IN THY NAME HAVE CAST OUT DEVILS? AND IN THY NAME DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS? AND THEN WILL I PROFESS UNTO THEM, I NEVER KNEW YOU: DEPART FROM ME, YE THAT WORK INIQUITY-Mt 7:22,23.
WHEREIN THEY...SHALL GIVE ACCOUNT TO HIM THAT IS READY TO JUDGE THE QUICK AND THE DEAD-1 Pe 4:4,5.
11-WHAT ELSE SHALL JUDGE?
YOUR GOLD AND SILVER IS CANKERED; AND THE RUST OF THEM SHALL BE A WITNESS AGAINST YOU, AND SHALL EAT YOUR FLESH AS IT WERE FIRE. YE HAVE HEAPED TREASURE TOGETHER FOR THE LAST DAYS-Ja 5:3.
HE THAT REJECTETH ME, AND RECEIVETH NOT MY WORDS, HATH ONE THAT JUDGETH HIM: THE WORD THAT I HAVE SPOKEN, THE SAME SHALL JUDGE HIM IN THE LAST DAY-Jn 12:48.
THE STING OF DEATH IS SIN; AND THE STRENGTH OF SIN IS THE LAW-1 Cor 15:56.

12-THE LAW
FOR AS MANY AS HAVE SINNED WITHOUT LAW SHALL ALSO PERISH WITHOUT LAW: AND AS MANY AS HAVE SINNED IN THE LAW SHALL BE JUDGED BY THE LAW; (FOR NOT THE HEARERS OF THE LAW ARE JUST BEFORE GOD, BUT THE DOERS OF THE LAW SHALL BE JUSTIFIED. FOR WHEN THE GENTILES, WHICH HAVE NOT THE LAW, DO BY NATURE THE THINGS CONTAINED IN THE LAW, THESE, HAVING NOT THE LAW, ARE A LAW UNTO THEMSELVES: WHICH SHOW THE WORK OF THE LAW WRITTEN IN THEIR HEARTS, THEIR CONSCIENCE ALSO BEARING WITNESS, AND THEIR THOUGHTS THE MEAN WHILE ACCUSING OR ELSE EXCUSING ONE ANOTHER;) IN THE DAY WHEN GOD SHALL JUDGE THE SECRETS OF MEN BY JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MY GOSPEL-Ro 2:12-16.

NOW WE KNOW THAT WHAT THINGS SOEVER THE LAW SAITH, IT SAITH TO THEM WHO ARE UNDER THE LAW: THAT EVERY MOUTH MAY BE STOPPED, AND ALL THE WORLD MAY BECOME GUILTY BEFORE GOD. THEREFORE BY THE DEEDS OF THE LAW THERE SHALL NO FLESH BE JUSTIFIED IN HIS SIGHT: FOR BY THE LAW IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN. BUT NOW THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD WITHOUT THE LAW IS MANIFESTED, BEING WITNESSED BY THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS; EVEN THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD WHICH IS BY FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST UNTO ALL AND UPON ALL THEM THAT BELIEVE: FOR THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE: FOR ALL HAVE SINNED, AND COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD-Ro 3:19-23.
FOR WHOSOEVER SHALL KEEP THE WHOLE LAW, AND YET OFFEND IN ONE POINT, HE IS GUILTY OF ALL. FOR HE THAT SAID, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, SAID ALSO, DO NOT KILL. NOW IF THOU COMMIT NO ADULTERY, YET IF THOU KILL, THOU ART BECOME A TRANSGRESSOR OF THE LAW-Ja 2:10,11.
13-WHO ELSE SHALL JUDGE?
Some of the saints will accuse, condemn, or judge others at this judgment.
DO NOT THINK THAT I WILL ACCUSE YOU TO THE FATHER: THERE IS ONE THAT ACCUSETH YOU, EVEN MOSES, IN WHOM YE TRUST-Jn 5:45.
THE MEN OF NINEVEH SHALL RISE (up at the judgment) IN JUDGMENT WITH THIS GENERATION, AND SHALL CONDEMN IT: BECAUSE THEY REPENTED AT THE PREACHING OF JONAH; AND, BEHOLD, A GREATER THAN JONAH IS HERE-Mt 12:41; ref Lk 11:32.
THE QUEEN OF THE SOUTH SHALL RISE UP IN THE JUDGMENT WITH (the men of) THIS GENERATION, AND SHALL CONDEMN IT (or them): FOR SHE CAME FROM THE UTTERMOST (or utmost) PARTS OF THE EARTH TO HEAR THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON; AND, BEHOLD, A GREATER THAN SOLOMON IS HERE-Mt 12:42; ref Lk 11:31.
AND IF I BY BEELZEBUB CAST OUT DEVILS, BY WHOM DO YOUR SONS CAST THEM OUT? THEREFORE SHALL THEY BE YOUR JUDGES-Lk 11:19.

14-SOME SHALL BE JUDGED MORE SEVERELY THAN OTHERS
The Scriptures appear to teach that a person will be judged more or less severely, according to the opportunities that they had to hear God’s Word and to come to Christ. They also seem to indicate a person will be judged more or less severely, according to the magnitude of the preaching and miracles that they heard or saw.
It is written, VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE FOR THE LAND OF SODOM AND GOMORRHA IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THAN FOR THAT CITY. WOE UNTO THEE, CHORAZIN! WOE UNTO THEE, BETHSAIDA! BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE FOR THE LAND OF SODOM IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THAN FOR THEE-Mt 10:15; 11:21-24.
15-WHAT CAN WE DO?
THEREFORE JUDGE NOTHING BEFORE THE TIME, UNTIL THE LORD COME, WHO BOTH WILL BRING TO LIGHT THE HIDDEN THINGS OF DARKNESS-1 Cor 4:5.
THEREFORE IF THINE ENEMY HUNGER, FEED HIM; IF HE THIRST, GIVE HIM DRINK: FOR IN SO DOING THOU SHALT HEAP COALS OF FIRE ON HIS HEAD-Ro 12:20.
16-THE FINAL OUTCOME OF THE UNSAVED
The thought of eternity in everlasting torment is horrible, yet some shall be punished even worse than others.
Know that THE SEED OF THE WICKED SHALL BE CUT OFF-Ps 37:28. FOR, LO, THINE ENEMIES, O LORD, FOR, LO, THINE ENEMIES SHALL PERISH- Ps 92:9. AND THE DESTRUCTION OF THE TRANSGRESSORS AND OF THE SINNERS SHALL BE TOGETHER, AND THEY THAT FORSAKE THE LORD SHALL BE CONSUMED-Isa 1:28.
AND DEATH AND HELL WERE CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE. THIS IS THE SECOND DEATH. AND WHOSOEVER WAS NOT FOUND WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE WAS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE-Rev 20:14,15. For HE WILL BURN UP THE CHAFF WITH UNQUENCHABLE FIRE-Mt 3:12; INTO THE FIRE THAT NEVER SHALL BE QUENCHED-Mk 9:45; WHERE THEIR WORM DIETH NOT, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED-Mk 9:44,46,48.
And THERE SHALL BE WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH-Mt 24:51; WHEN YE SHALL SEE ABRAHAM, AND ISAAC, AND JACOB, AND ALL THE PROPHETS, IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD, AND YOU YOURSELVES THRUST OUT-Lk 13:28.
For THE AXE IS LAID UNTO THE ROOT OF THE TREES: THEREFORE EVERY TREE WHICH BRINGETH NOT FORTH GOOD FRUIT IS HEWN DOWN, AND CAST INTO THE FIRE-Mt 3:10. For IF A MAN ABIDE NOT IN ME, HE IS CAST FORTH AS A BRANCH, AND IS WITHERED; AND MEN GATHER THEM, AND CAST THEM INTO THE FIRE, AND THEY ARE BURNED-Jn 15:6.
And THE CHILDREN OF THE KINGDOM SHALL BE CAST OUT INTO OUTER DARKNESS: THERE SHALL BE WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH-Mt 8:12.
And THE FEARFUL, AND UNBELIEVING, AND THE ABOMINABLE, AND MURDERERS, AND WHOREMONGERS, AND SORCERERS, AND IDOLATERS, AND ALL LIARS, SHALL HAVE THEIR PART IN THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH-Rev 21:8.
The ungodly, and those that SPEAK EVIL OF THOSE THINGS WHICH THEY KNOW NOT...CLOUDS THEY ARE WITHOUT WATER, CARRIED ABOUT OF WINDS; TREES WHOSE FRUIT WITHERETH, WITHOUT FRUIT, TWICE DEAD, PLUCKED UP BY THE ROOTS; RAGING WAVES OF THE SEA, FOAMING OUT THEIR OWN SHAME; WANDERING STARS, TO WHOM IS RESERVED THE BLACKNESS OF DARKNESS FOR EVER-Jude 10,12,13.
AND THAT SERVANT, WHICH KNEW HIS LORD’S WILL, AND PREPARED NOT HIMSELF, NEITHER DID ACCORDING TO HIS WILL, SHALL BE BEATEN WITH MANY STRIPES-Lk 12:47. BUT HE THAT KNEW NOT, AND DID COMMIT THINGS WORTHY OF STRIPES, SHALL BE BEATEN WITH FEW STRIPES-Lk 12:48. And those WHICH DEVOUR WIDOW’S HOUSES, AND FOR A SHOW MAKE LONG PRAYERS: THE SAME SHALL RECEIVE GREATER DAMNATION-Lk 20:47; ref Mk 12:40.
For AFTER THY HARDNESS AND IMPENITENT HEART TREASUREST UP UNTO THYSELF WRATH AGAINST THE DAY OF WRATH AND REVELATION OF THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT OF GOD; WHO WILL RENDER TO EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS-Ro 2:5,6.
17-THE SAINTS PRESERVED FOREVER
THE LORD...FORSAKETH NOT HIS SAINTS; THEY ARE PRESERVED FOR EVER-Ps 37:28.
18-OTHER INFORMATION
FOR MORE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE DESOLATE THAN THE CHILDREN OF THE MARRIED WIFE-Isa 54:1.

"bema" is definitely a seat of judgment, and not simply one of "rewards" as many would have you to believe. The distinction in Scripture between different types of judgment seats is entirely foreign. Just because different Greek words are used to describe a judgment seat in the NT does not mean these are different types of judgments. It's an illogical distinction that fails to take into account that words are used synonomously. Though different words are employed, the same concept is still in view. It would be like saying there is a distinction between the word car and automobile.

The notion that Rev 20:11-15 refers to a distinct judgment where the righteousness are not present, and the unrighteous are only there is entirely foreign to the Scriptures. No such distinction is made. Rather, it is shown that some survive this judgment, and some do not. Those who survive this judgment are those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life, and those who are not found in the book of life are cast into the lake of fire. If you don't believe this interpretation, then you simply cannot make sense of passages like Matt 25:31-46, which shows the judgment of believers occuring at the same time as that as unbelievers.

Dispensationalists might come up with clever nonsense to get around these passages, because to them the notion of us being judged according to our works and being allowed to enter into eternal life as a result of that judgment is simply too frigthening as it really messes with their false notions of grace and faith. But their distinctions that come under the phrase "rightly dividing" is entirely silly.

As Keith Green so aptly summed up on his song on the parable of the sheep and the goats, "my friends, the only difference between the sheep and the goats according to the Scriptures, is what they did and didn't DO."

Bema vs. Thronos

These two words are the Greek words used in the Scriptures that are translated "judgement." According to the BDAG Greek Lexicon (Of the NT, Greek Fathers, etc), the following is supplied:

Bema - original movement by raising a step.

1) a step forward made by a foot, step (a little less than a meter)

2) a very limited space, step (a stride)

3) a dais or platform that required steps to ascend, tribunal... A magistrate would address an assembly from a chair placed on a structure, especially a judicial bench; used of God's judgment seat; used also of Christ; of the throne-like nature of the speaker's platform.

Thronos -

1) chair, seat
a) generic use
b) specificially a chair set aside for one of high status, throne.
i) of human kings and rulers
ii) of God
iii) of Christ
iv) of the 12 apostles
v) of the 24 elders

2) supreme power over political entity, dominion, sovereignty

3) name of a class of powerful beigns, earthly or transcendent, the enthroned.

The idea behind both is judgement, especially the idea of it taking place upon a seat. There is real difference between them in the Greek.

The Judgement of 1 Cor 3:1-14

In verses 1-4 the apostle Paul addresses division that is occuring in the Corinthian church. Divisions are forming amongst the believers are starting to take a super-star attitude towards the apostolic ministers that have visisted the congregation. Sharp divisions are starting occur, with some saying "I am of Paul," and others are starting to say "I am of Apollos."

Paul then goes on to say in verses 5-7 that they are not the super-stars the church is imagining them, rather, they are merely servants of Christ through whom the Corinthians came to having a saving knowledge of Christ. Instead of embracing a super-star attitude, Paul says he and Apollos are simply individuals who each played a unique role in bringing about the conversion of individuals in Corinth. Instead of taking credit, Paul gives God all the honor, saying the one planted, another watered, but it was God who gave the increase.

In verses 8 Paul says though each has a unique role to play, they are ultimately one in goal. However, they will each receive a reward for their individual part in the labor.

In verse 9 Paul identifies the Corinthians as the field in which he and Apollos labored. Paul was responsible for planting seeds. Apollos was responsible for watering those seeds and nourishing them. But as previously said, it was God who caused the actual growth.

The apostle Paul in verses 10-14 now switches the analogy from that of farmers working in a field to that of builders working on a building. In verse 10, Paul says "according to the grace of God which was given to me" like a wise master builder, he laid a foundation. But another is building upon that foundation which he laid. That "another" in this instace, would be his apostolic team member, Apollos.

Paul says that whoever might be building on this foundation that he laid, he warns them to "be careful how he builds on it." In verse 11 he reminds them that there is no other foundation that can be laid but that of Jesus Christ. Christ is the very foundation of our life, and He is the foundation that is to be laid in our work of missions.

In verse 12 Paul talks about two types of building material. In one category he talks about things that are imperishable: gold, silver, and precious stones. In a contrasting category he speaks of things that are perishable: wood, hay, and straw. In verse 13 Paul talks about how one day there will come a time of fire, a time of judgment, in which fire will be put to each man's work. If you put fire to the first category of things, the fire will not destroy those things. But the second category of things, if you put fire to them, they will be destroyed.

The contrast is between that which is eternal vs. that which is only temporary. The fire will therefore "test the quality of each man's work." The fire will destinguish between that which is of eternal value and that which is not. Paul says in verse 14 when the fires come and test the work, if the works survives then you will receive a reward for that. When the fires come however, if the work you did was not of eternal value, it will not survive and perish. You will therefore, have no reward, and that which you built did not survive, therefore you will suffer loss for it, though you will still be saved.

Now, this passage is often grossly misinterprted by many, especially those of a "once saved always saved" camp. The gold, silver, and precious stones are often depicted correctly as some sort of good work. However, the wood, hay, and straw are incorrectly depicted as bad, sinful, wicked behavior. It is therefore taught you will receive a reward for doing good, but if you do bad, well, you will not have a reward, but you will still be saved.

But such an interpretation is simply NOT correct, and is a gross misunderstanding (sometimes deliberately so!) of the passage. Rather, the passage is simply a reminder to build carefully upon the work of the Lord. The passage is about one's own personal ministry, and the reward one will receive for that unique labor which one undertakes, whether it be planting seed or watering, or whatever other ministry there might be.

The precious material's are those things we build in people's lives that are of eternal value. It is what we add to them. These things will endure the fires to come. But those things that are perishable, those things that are not of eternal value, those things which so many ministers these days consume themselves with (e.g. building programs), are not of eternal value. Though they are not by any means bad works, they simply are not of eternal value. Such things obviously will become a heap of ashes on the day of judgment, and be unable to endure the consuming fire of God. One need not be worried that they will lose their salvation for such works, as again, they are not wrong in themselves. But when it comes to eternity, they are of no value whatsoever. So, when building upon the foundation that is laid in the work of ministry, it is best to build upon Christ with materials that are of eternal value.

As Ravenhill once pointed out quite well, the gold, silver, and precious stones are all things that are hidden. They are things you have to dig at to find. The wood, hay, and straw are all things that are above ground, evident to all, and have no depth to them.

To use this passage to attempt to justify doctrines such as "once saved always saved" (even if it were a true doctrine), is simply unjustifiable and totally without warrant. Anybody who says otherwise is frankly reading things into the passage that simply are not supported by the passage. Many fanciful ideas abound, even some suggested in this thread, but, are totally without warrant.

Hello there, King Jimmy:

Maybe you can explain to me what I find in God's Word in reference to end time events. Scripture tells me specifically that Christ brings His saints with him at the second coming. Also, Scripture reveals that the saints will be present with Him at the Great White throne to execute Judgment with him.

How can this be, based upon your understanding of escatology?

When Christ comes again, all of HIS SAINTS WILL COME WITH HIM:

Zechariah 14
1. Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3. Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
5. And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, AND ALL THE SAINTS WITH THEE.

Christ saints are with Him to execute judgment at the great white throne judgment:

Psalms 149

1. Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3. Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4. For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5. Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand;
7. To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8. To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9. TO EXECUTE UPON THEM THE JUDGMENT WRITTEN: THIS HONOUR HAVE ALL HIS SAINTS. PRAISE YE THE LORD.

It is quite obvious that the saints cannot be judged at the Great White Throne, because they would all have been raptured, and receive their new resurrection bodies before they came with Him at the second coming, that takes place before the Great White Throne.

Would appreciate a thoughtful answer, supported by Scripture.

God bless,

Stever

Hi Kingjimmy:

Explain to me, please. How can a Christian be judged for sin? Christ took the entire sin of the world upon himself. The whole world would be sin free IF THE WHOLE WORLD BELIEVED IN HIM, AND THE WORK THAT HE DID AT CALVARY AND THE RESURRECTION. When Christians accept Christ as Lord, God sees them as sinless.

The only thing that is required is belief in him, no works, lest any of us should boast.

The problem- not everyone that says they believe do believe. Christ is the only one that knows the heart. That is why some will be raptured from the Church, and some will be left. Left to go into the Great Tribulation as spoken of by Daniel. There will be many people that enter this Tribulation that come to belief in Jesus Christ as Lord. Most of them will be beheaded.

That's what I find in God's Word. Why should believers go through the Great Tribulation (the Wrath to come)? As believers, we are spared from the wrath to come, the great tribulation.
1 Tes 1:10 "10.And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come."

Indeed, Christ will bring His saints with Him at the second coming. Indeed, the saints will be present with Him at the great white throne to execute judgment with Him. There is also the judgment of angels that Paul mentions we will participate in. Scripture is very clear about these things, though the exact nature and timing of the judgment of angels is a little vague. However, Christ so no conflict in all this, as He taught in the parable of the sheep and the goats that the righteous and unrighteous will stand before Him simultaneously. And like the parable of the sheep and goats, we see such in Rev 20.

The whole world would be sin free IF THE WHOLE WORLD BELIEVED IN HIM, AND THE WORK THAT HE DID AT CALVARY AND THE RESURRECTION. When Christians accept Christ as Lord, God sees them as sinless.

The wages of sin is death... even if you are a Christian. Christ sees you indeed as sinless if you are indeed sinless. That is, if you've repented of your sins and received the cleasning power of the blood of Christ, which not only erases the guilt of sin, but also takes away sin. But, if you are living in unrepentant sin, you are guilty in the sight of God, and are deserving of God's wrath.

The only thing that is required is belief in him, no works, lest any of us should boast.

No doubt. But we will be judged according to our works.

Why should believers go through the Great Tribulation (the Wrath to come)? As believers, we are spared from the wrath to come, the great tribulation.

This logic doesn't make sense. So, Christ is going to take believers out of the world to spare them from the 7 year tribulation period? Yet, geniune believers that are made during the 7 year tribulation period must suffer through it. Should God not automatically rapture those that come to believe? After all, He doesn't want them to go through the tribulation period. Which is it? Does God want them to go through it or not?

Why would their being born again during the tribulation period disqualify them from being spared the things that come upon the earth in those days? Are the promises of Christ to believers not theirs as well?

sermonindex May 5, 2006

Hello, KingJimmy:

The Great Tribulation is a period of judgment that comes upon this earth and has been prepared for NON-BELIEVERS in Christ. Many of these people, when they are down on their backs will look up, and repent and become believers. The life that they would continue to live during the Tribulation would be severe. because God continues this judgment drastically during the last 3 1/2 years.

God's word tells us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, IF YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN BELIEVER. If you are not, you soul goes to hell, where you await the Great White Throne. At Great White Throne Judgment your body is called from the grave and you are resurrected to meet judgment, a judgment of works. Everyone in this audience is relying on their own works, and are judged by the standard, the LAW, GOD'S WORD. No matter who is judged here, they are found lacking, and before being sentenced, will bow their knee to HIM, CHRIST JESUS, as Lord.

Hebrews Chapter 9 verse 14 tells us that His blood purges (cleanses) us of dead works, that all non-believers rely on to get to heaven.

" 14. How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

So, if you are a sinner, that becomes a believer during the tribulation, you will be killed by AntiChrist and the False Prophet "system", and be immediately in the presence of the Lord. I would rather be there any day of the week, rather than here. And that even goes for today, not much less during the Tribulation.

How do we know that those that are killed during the Tribulation are in Heaven? God's Word tells is Revelation that very fact:

[Revelation 6:9-11]
"9.And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: 10. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? 11. And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled."

Your asked:
"Why should believers go through the Great Tribulation (the Wrath to come)? As believers, we are spared from the wrath to come, the great tribulation."

The answer is as close as your nearest Bible. Only those that are LOST go through the Great Tribulation. Only the lost are on their way to hell. Wrath is a term that refers both to the Great Tribulation, and also the final wrath that never ends--HELL. Believers are raptured before the Great Tribulation, before Anti-Christ is revealed. [All believers are saved from the wrath to come 1 Thes 1:10 "10. And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come."]

2 Thes 2:1-3 "1. Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2. That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, AND THAT MAN OF SIN BE REVEALED, THE SON OF PERDITION;"

Christ tells us that flesh and blood cannot inherit eternal life. God cannot stand the presence of us mudballs in our bodies of flesh and blood that we inherited from Adam. Adam's polluted blood still flows through our veins. Eventhough we have the down payment of the Holy Spirit that lives within our hearts, we are still hopelessly wicked. Our thoughts are still corrupt, eventhough though we do not follow through with the physical act. Everytime we look upon a beautiful woman in lust, we are guilty of adultery. At this point, as a believer, the Holy Ghost convicts us of our sin, we repent and turn to Christ, ask for forgiveness, and continue our walk with HIM.

1 Cor 15:49-58 tells us that only when we have our new, resurrected bodies, new glorified bodies, exactly like Christ, will we receive eternal life. We will receive these at the rapture, before the Tribulation. Those believers killed during the Tribulation will be raptured before the 2nd coming, in time to join Christ and all of his Angels at the 2nd coming. He is the firstfruits of the resurrection, and we also follow after that, and are part of the firstfruits.

(KJV 1 Cor 15:49-58)
49. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
50. Now this I say, brethren, that FLESH AND BLOOD CANNOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD; NEITHER DOTH CORRUPTION INHERIT INCORRUPTION.
51. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56. The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Stever's response:

If you are a Christian, you are saved. The definition of being a Christian is belief in Jesus Christ as LORD (GOD) and Savior, and belief in his death, and resurrection. If you are not a Christian, as described above, eventhough you attend a Bible believing Church, you are a sinner. Our belief in Christ takes us out of the 1st Adam and supernaturally puts us into the 2nd Adam, Jesus Christ.

If you or I say that we are a Christian it has no meaning. God is the only one that knows the heart. We know if we are saved, and God knows. He that truly believes in CHRIST IS a Christian, and he who doesn't believe in Christ is not a Christian. It has nothing to do with what we do. People that are concerned with saying kind things, and doing good deeds that will save them are actually lost. The only thing that saves us is JESUS, AND OUR BELIEF IN HIM. God knows who that is, we know who that is if it is us, but it is impossible for us to know if anyone else is saved.

The reasoning in your statement above is circular in nature, and therefore meaningless. If we are a Christian, we are in Christ, and saved. If we are not in Christ, we are of the Devil, and on our way to Hell.

Where is your understanding of the monumental work that Christ performed for all believers, going back to the beginning of time? How could Abraham be saved, if Christ was not alive at the time that he was alive? Look in the Book of Hebrews and discover who our witnesses are, Names like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Samson (that is a hard one for you, isn't it), and Jepthae, etc. etc. etc. All of these men were saved by their belief in the coming Messiah. We are saved by our belief in the Messiah that came.

This is a definition of Atonement as found in International Bible Encyclopedia that might help:

Topics: Atonement

a-ton'-ment: Translates kaphar; chaTa'; ratsah, the last employed only of human relations (1 Sam 29:4); translates the following Greek stems hilas-, simple and compounded with various prepositions; allag- in composition only, but with numerous prepositions and even two at a time, e.g. Mt 5:24; lip- rarely (Dan 9:24).

I. Terms Employed.

1. Hebrew and Greek Words:

The root meanings of the Hebrew words, taking them in the order cited above, are, to "cover," hence expiate, condone, cancel, placate; to "offer," or "receive a sin offering," hence, make atonement, appease, propitiate; "effect reconciliation," i.e. by some conduct, or course of action. Of the Greek words the meanings, in order, are "to be," or "cause to be, friendly"; "to render other," hence to restore; "to leave" and with preposition to leave off, i.e. enmity, or evil, etc.; "to render holy," "to set apart for"; hence, of the Deity, to appropriate or accept for Himself.

2. The English Word:

It is obvious that the English word "atonement" does not correspond etymologically with any Hebrew or Greek word which it translates. Furthermore, the Greek words in both Septuagint and New Testament do not correspond exactly to the Hebrew words; especially is it true that the root idea of the most frequently employed Hebrew word, "cover," is not found in any of the Greek words employed. These remarks apply to both verbs and substantives The English word is derived from the phrase "at one," and signifies, etymologically, harmony of relationship or unity of life, etc. It is a rare instance of an AS theological term; and, like all purely English terms employed in theology, takes its meaning, not from its origin, but from theological content of the thinking of the Continental and Latin-speaking Schoolmen who employed such English terms as seemed most nearly to convey to the hearers and readers their ideas. Not only was no effort made to convey the original Hebrew and Greek meanings by means of English words, but no effort was made toward uniformity in translating of Hebrew and Greek words by their English equivalents.

3. Not to Be Settled by Lexicon Merely:

It is at once clear that no mere word-study can determine the Bible teaching concerning atonement. Even when first employed for expressing Hebrew and Christian thought, these terms, like all other religious terms, already had a content that had grown up with their use, and it is by no means easy to tell how far heathen conceptions might be imported into our theology by a rigidly etymological study of terms employed. In any case such a study could only yield a dictionary of terms, whereas what we seek is a body of teaching, a circle of ideas, whatever words and phrases, or combinations of words and phrases, have been employed to express the teaching.

4. Not Chiefly a Study in Theology:

There is even greater danger of making the study of the Atonement a study in dogmatic theology. The frequent employment of the expression "the Atonement" shows this tendency. The work of Christ in reconciling the world to God has occupied so central a place in Christian dogmatics that the very term atonement has come to have a theological rather than a practical atmosphere, and it is by no means easy for the student, or even for the seeker after the saving relation with God, to pass beyond the accumulated interpretation of the Atonement and learn of atonement.

5. Notes on Use of Terms:

The history of the explanation of the Atonement and the terms of preaching atonement cannot, of course, be ignored. Nor can the original meaning of the terms employed and the manner of their use be neglected. There are significant features in the use of terms, and we have to take account of the history of interpretation. Only we must not bind ourselves nor the word of God in such forms.

(1) The most frequently employed Hebrew word, kaphar, is found in the Prophets only in the priestly section (Ezek 45:15,20; Dan 9:24) where English Versions of the Bible have "make reconciliation," margin, "purge away." Furthermore, it is not found in Deuteronomy, which is the prophetic book of the Pentateuch (Hexateuch). This indicates that it is an essentially priestly conception. The same term is frequently translated by "reconcile," construed as equivalent to "make atonement" (Lev 6:30; 8:15; 16:20; 1 Sam 29:4; Ezek 45:15,20; Dan 9:24). In this latter sense it connects itself with chaTa'. In 2 Ch 29:24 both words are used: the priests make a sin offering chaTa' to effect an atonement kaphar. But the first word is frequently used by metonymy to include, at least suggestively, the end in view, the reconciliation; and, on the other hand, the latter word is so used as to involve, also, doing that by which atonement is realized.

(2) Of the Greek words employed hilaskesthai means "to make propitious" (Heb 2:17; Lev 6:30; 16:20; Ezek 45:20); allattein, used however only in composition with prepositions, means "to render other," "to restore" to another (former?) condition of harmony (compare Mt 5:24 = "to be reconciled" to a fellow-man as a condition of making an acceptable sacrifice to God).s an essentially priestly conception.

(3) In the English New Testament the word "atonement" is found only at Rom 5:11 and the American Standard Revised Version changes this to "reconciliation." While in strict etymology this word need signify only the active or conscious exercise of unity of life or harmony of relations, the causative idea probably belongs to the original use of the term, as it certainly is present in all current Christian use of the term. As employed in Christian theology, both practical and technical, the term includes with more or less distinctness: (a) the fact of union with God, and this always looked upon as (b) a broken union to be restored or an ideal union to be realized, (c) the procuring cause of atonement, variously defined, (d) the crucial act wherein the union is effected, the work of God and the response of the soul in which the union becomes actual. Inasmuch as the reconciliation between man and God is always conceived of as effected through Jesus Christ (2 Cor 5:18-21) the expression, "the Atonement of Christ," is one of the most frequent in Christian theology. Questions and controversies have turned mainly on the procuring cause of atonement, (c) above, and at this point have arisen the various "theories of the Atonement."

II. Bible Teaching concerning Atonement in General:

The Atonement of Christ must be interpreted in connection with the conception of atonement in general in the Scriptures. This idea of atonement is, moreover, part of the general circle of fundamental ideas of the religion of Yahweh and Jesus. Theories of the Atonement root themselves in conceptions of the nature and character of God, His holiness, love, grace, mercy, etc.; of man, his nature, disposition and capacities; of sin and guilt.

1. Primary Assumption of Unity of God and Man:

The basal conception for the Bible doctrine of atonement is the assumption that God and man are ideally one in life and interests, so far as man's true life and interest may be conceived as corresponding with those of God. Hence, it is everywhere assumed that God and man should be in all respects in harmonious relations, "at-one." Such is the ideal picture of Adam and Eve in Eden. Such is the assumption in the parable of the Prodigal Son; man ought to be at home with God, at peace in the Father's house (Lk 15). Such also is the ideal of Jesus as seen especially in Jn 14 through 17; compare particularly 17:21ff; compare also Eph 2:11-22; 1 Cor 15:28. This is quite possibly the underlying idea of all those offerings in which the priests--God's representatives-and the people joined in eating at a common meal parts of what had been presented to God. The prohibition of the use of blood in food or drink is grounded on the statement that the life is in the blood (Lev 17:10 f) or is the blood (Gen 9:4; Dt 12:23). Blood was used in the consecration of tabernacle, temple, vessels, altars, priests; all things and persons set apart for Yahweh. Then blood was required in offerings made to atone for sin and uncleanness. The reason for all this is not easy to see; but if we seek an explanation that will account for all the facts on a single principle, shall we not find it in the idea that in the life-principle of the blood God's own life was present? Through this life from God all living beings shared God's life. The blood passing out of any living being must therefore return to God and not be consumed. In sprinkling blood, the life-element, or certainly the life-symbol, over persons and things set apart for God they were, so to say, visibly taken up into the life of God, and His life extending over them made them essentially of His own person. Finally the blood of sacrifices was the returning to God of the life of the man for whom the beasts stood. And this blood was not burned with the dead sacrifice but poured out beside the holy altar. The now dead sin offering was burned, but the blood, the life, returned to God. In peace-offerings of various sorts there was the common meal in which the common life was typified.

In the claim of the first-fruits of all crops, of all flocks and of all increase, God emphasized the common life in production; asserted His claim to the total life of His people and their products. God claimed the lives of all as belonging essentially to Himself and a man must recognize this by paying a ransom price (Ex 30:12). This did not purchase for the man a right to his own life in separation from God, for it was in no sense an equivalent in value to the man's time. It the rather committed the man to living the common life with God, without which recognition the man was not fit to live at all. And the use of this recognition-money by the priests in the temple was regarded as placing the man who paid his money in a sort of continuous worshipful service in the tabernacle (or temple) itself (Ex 30:11-16).

2. The Breach in the Unity:

In both Old Testament and New Testament the assumption of unity between God and man stands over against the contrasted fact that there is a radical breach in this unity. This breach is recognized in all God's relations to men; and even when healed it is always subject to new failures which must be provided for, by the daily oblations in the Old Testament, by the continuous intercession of the Christ (Heb 7:25; 9:24) in the New Testament. Even when there is no conscious breach, man is taught to recognize that it may exist and he must avail himself of the appointed means for its healing, e.g. daily sacrifices. This breach is universally attributed to some behavior on man's part. This may be moral or ceremonial uncleanness on man's part. He may have broken with God fundamentally in character or conduct and so by committing sin have incurred guilt; or he may have neglected the fitting recognition that his life is in common with God and so by his disregard have incurred uncleanness. After the first breach between God and man it is always necessary that man shall approach God on the assumption that this breach needs healing, and so always come with an offering. In human nature the sin breach is rooted and universal (Rom 3:9-19; 5:12-14).

3. Means for Expressing, Restoring and Maintaining:

Numerous and various means were employed for expressing this essential unity of life, for restoring it since it was broken off in sin, and for maintaining it. These means were primarily spiritual and ethical but made extensive use of material substances, physical acts and symbolical ceremonials; and these tended always to obscure and supplant the spiritual and ethical qualities which it was their function to exhibit. The prophet came to the rescue of the spiritual and ethical and reached his highest insight and function in the doctrine of the Suffering Servant of Yahweh through whom God was to be united with a redeemed race (compare among many passages, Isa 49:1-7; 66:18 ff; Ps 22:27 ff).

Atonement is conceived in both Old Testament and New Testament as partly personal and partly social, extending to the universal conception. The acts and attitudes by which it is procured, restored and maintained are partly those of the individual alone (Ps 51), partly those in which the individual secures the assistance of the priest or the priestly body, and partly such as the priest performs for the whole people on his own account. This involves the distinction that in Israel atonement was both personal and social, as also were both sin and uncleanness. Atonement was made for the group by the priest without specific participation by the people although they were, originally at least, to take cognizance of the fact and at the time. At all the great feasts, especially upon the DAY OF ATONEMENT (which see) the whole group was receptively to take conscious part in the work of atonement (Nu 29:7-11).

The various sacrifices and offerings by means of which atonement was effected in the life and worship of Israel will be found to be discussed under the proper words and are to be spoken of here only summarily. The series of offerings, guilt-offerings, burnt-offerings, sin-offerings, peace-offerings, reveal a sense of the breach with God, a conviction of the sin making the breach and an ethical appreciation of the holiness of God entirely unique among religions of ancient or modern times, and this fact must never be overlooked in interpreting the New Testament Christian doctrine of the Atonement. In the Old Testament there are sins and sinful circumstances for which no atonement is possible. Many passages, indeed, almost seem to provide against atonement for any voluntary wrongdoing (e.g. Lev 4:2,13,22,27; 5:14 ff). This is, no doubt, an extreme interpretation, out of harmony with the general spirit of the Old Testament, but it does show how seriously sin ought to be taken under the Old Testament regime. No atonement for murder could make possible the residence of the murderer again in that section of the land where the murder was done (Nu 35:33), although the land was not by the murder rendered unfit for occupation by others. When Israel sinned in making the golden calf, God refused to accept any atonement (Ex 32:20 ff) until there had been a great loss of life from among the sinners. No repentance could find atonement for the refusal to follow Yahweh's lead at Kadesh-barnea (Nu 14:20-25), and complete atonement was effected only when all the unbelieving generation had died in the wilderness (Nu 26:65; 32:10 ff); i.e. no atonement was possible, but the people died in that sin, outside the Land of Promise, although the sin was not allowed to cut off finally from Yahweh (Nu 14:29 f).

Permanent uncleanness or confirmed disease of an unclean sort caused permanent separation from the temple and the people of Yahweh (e.g. Lev 7:20 f), and every uncleanness must be properly removed (Lev 5:2b; 17:15; 22:2-8; Dt 23:10 f). A house in which an unclean disease was found must be cleansed--have atonement made for it (Lev 14:53), and in extreme cases must be utterly destroyed (Lev 14:43 ff).

After childbirth (Lev 12:7 f) and in all cases of hemorrhage (compare Lev 15:30) atonement must be effected by prescribed offerings, a loss, diminution, or pollution of blood, wherein is the life, having been suffered. All this elaborate application of the principle of atonement shows the comprehensiveness with which it was sought by the religious teachers to impress the people with the unity of all life in the perfectly holy and majestic God whom they were called upon to serve. Not only must the priests be clean who bear the vessels of the Lord (Isa 52:11), but all the people must be clean also from all defilement of flesh and spirit, seeking perfect holiness in the fear of their God (compare 2 Cor 7:1).

III. The Atonement of Jesus Christ

1. Preparation for New Testament Doctrine:

All the symbols, doctrine and examples of atonement in the Old Testament among the Hebrews find their counterpart, fulfillment and complete explanation in the new covenant in the blood of Jesus Christ (Mt 26:28; Heb 12:24). By interpreting the inner spirit of the sacrificial system, by insisting on the unity and holiness of God, by passionate pleas for purity in the people, and especially by teaching the principle of vicarious suffering for sin, the Prophets laid the foundation in thought-forms and in religious atmosphere for such a doctrine of atonement as is presented in the life and teaching of Jesus and as is unfolded in the teaching of His apostles.

The personal, parabolic sufferings of Hosea, the remarkable elaboration of the redemption of spiritual Israel through a Suffering Servant of Yahweh and the extension of that redemption to all mankind as presented in Isa 40 through 66, and the same element in such psalms as Ps 22, constitute a key to the understanding of the work of the Christ that unifies the entire revelation of God's righteousness in passing over human sins (Rom 3:24 f). Yet it is remarkable that such a conception of the way of atonement was as far as possible from the general and average Jewish mind when Jesus came. In no sense can the New Testament doctrine of the Atonement be said to be the product of the thought and spirit of the times.

2. The One Clear Fact:

However much theologians may disagree as to the rationale of the Atonement, there is, as there can be, no question that Jesus and all His interpreters in the New Testament represent the Atonement between God and men as somehow accomplished through Jesus Christ. It is also an agreed fact in exegesis that Jesus and His apostles understood His death to be radically connected with this Atonement.

(1) Jesus Himself teaches that He has come to reveal the Father (Jn 14:9), to recover the lost (Lk 19:10), to give life to men (Jn 6:33; 10:10), to disclose and establish the kingdom of heaven (or of God), gathering a few faithful followers through whom His work will be perpetuated (Jn 17:2 ff; Mt 16:13 ff); that salvation, personal and social, is dependent upon His person (Jn 6:53 ff; 14:6). He cannot give full teaching concerning His death but He does clearly connect His sufferings with the salvation He seeks to give. He shows in Lk 4:16 ff and 22:37 that He understands Isa 52 through 53 as realized in Himself; He is giving Himself (and His blood) a ransom for men (Mt 20:28; 26:26 ff; compare 1 Cor 11:23 ff). He was not a mere martyr but gave Himself up willingly, and voluntarily (Jn 10:17 f; Gal 2:20), in accordance with the purpose of God (Acts 2:23), as the Redeemer of the world, and expected that by His lifting up all men would be drawn to Him (Jn 12:31-33). It is possible to explain the attention which the Evangelists give to the death of Jesus only by supposing that they are reflecting the importance which they recall Jesus Himself to have attached to His death.

(2) All the New Testament writers agree in making Jesus the center of their idea of the way of salvation and that His death is an essential element in His saving power. This they do by combining Old Testament teaching with the facts of the life and death of the Lord, confirming their conclusion by appeal to the Resurrection. Paul represents himself as holding the common doctrine of Christianity at the time, and from the beginning, when in 1 Cor 15:3 f he sums up his teaching that salvation is secured through the death and re surrection of Jesus according to the Scriptures. Elsewhere (Eph 2:16,18; 1 Tim 2:5; compare Acts 4:12) in all his writings he emphasizes his belief that Jesus Christ is the one Mediator between God and man, by the blood of His cross (Col 1:20; 1 Cor 2:2), removing the sin barrier between God and men. Peter, during the life of Jesus so full of the current Jewish notion that God accepted the Jews de facto, in his later ministry makes Jesus in His death the one way to God (Acts 4:12; 1 Pet 1:2,18,19; 2:21,24; 3:18).

John has this element so prominent in his Gospel that radical critical opinion questions its authorship partly on that account, while the epistles of John and the Revelation are, on the same ground, attributed to later Greek thought (compare 1 Jn 1:7; 2:2; 3:5; 4:10; Rev 1:5; 5:9). The Epistle to the Hebrews finds in Jesus the fulfillment and extension of all the sacrificial system of Judaism and holds that the shedding of blood seems essential to the very idea of remission of sins (9:22; compare 2:17; 7:26 f; 9:24-28).

3. How Shall We Understand the Atonement?

When we come to systematize the teaching concerning the Atonement we find, as in all doctrine, that definite system is not offered us in the New Testament, but all system, if it is to have any value for Christianity, must find its materials and principles in the New Testament. Proceeding in this way some features may be stated positively and finally, while others must be presented interrogatively, recognizing that interpretations may differ.

(1) An initial consideration is that the Atonement originates with God who "was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself" (2 Cor 5:19), and whose love gave Jesus to redeem sinful men (Jn 3:16; Rom 5:8, etc.). In all atonement in Old Testament and New Testament the initiative is of God who not only devises and reveals the way to reconciliation, but by means of angels, prophets, priests and ultimately His only begotten Son applies the means of atonement and persuades men to accept the proffered reconciliation. Nothing in the speculation concerning the Atonement can be more false to its true nature than making a breach between God and His Christ in their attitude toward sinful men.

(2) It follows that atonement is fundamental in the nature of God in His relations to men, and that redemption is in the heart of God's dealing in history. The "Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (Rev 13:8 the King James Version and the English Revised Version; compare Rev 5:5-7) is the interpreter of the seven-sealed book of God's providence in historyú In Jesus we behold the Lamb of God taking away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29).

(3) The question will arise in the analysis of the doctrine: How does the death of Christ save us? No specific answer has ever been generally satisfactory. We have numerous theories of the Atonement. We have already intimated that the answer to this question will depend upon our idea of the nature of God, the nature of sin, the content of salvation, the nature of man, and our idea of Satan and evil spirits. We ought at once to dismiss all merely quantitative and commercial conceptions of exchange of merit. There is no longer any question that the doctrines of imputation, both of Adam's sin and of Christ's righteousness, were overwrought and applied by the early theologians with a fatal exclusiveness, without warrant in the Word of God. On the other hand no theory can hold much weight that presupposes that sin is a thing of light consequence in the nature of man and in the economy of God. Unless one is prepared to resist unto blood striving against sin (Heb 12:2-4), he cannot know the meaning of the Christ. Again, it may be said that the notion that the death of Christ is to be considered apart from His life, eternal and incarnate life, as the atoning work, is far too narrow to express the teaching of the Bible and far too shallow to meet the demands of an ethical conscience.

It would serve clearness if we reminded ourselves that the question of how in the Atonement may involve various elements. We may inquire: (a) for the ground on which God may righteously receive the sinner; (b) for the means by which God places the restoration within the reach of the sinner; (c) for the influence by which the sinner is persuaded to accept the reconciliation; (d) for the attitude or exercise of the sinner toward God in Christ wherein he actually enters the state of restored union with God. The various theories have seemed to be exclusive, or at least mutually antagonistic, largely because they have taken partial views of the whole subject and have emphasized some one feature of the whole content. All serious theories partly express the truth and all together are inadequate fully to declare how the Daystar from on high doth guide our feet into the way of peace (Lk 1:79).

(4) Another question over which theologians have sorely vexed themselves and each other concerns the extent of the Atonement, whether it is available for all men or only for certain particular, elect ones. That controversy may now be passed by. It is no longer possible to read the Bible and suppose that God relates himself sympathetically with only a part of the race. All segregated passages of Scripture formerly employed in support of such a view have now taken their place in the progressive self-interpretation of God to men through Christ who is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world (1 Jn 2:2). No man cometh unto the Father but by Him (Jn 14:6): but whosoever does thus call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Joel 2:32; Acts 2:21).

We are considered to be Holy, and Blameless, based upon what Christ did for us on Calvary. He took our sin, all of it, and we (real believers) will never be judged for sin. He is the one who knows who will be in attendance at the Great White Throne. Christ has told us that none that he has chosen will ever leave His hand, ever.

Kingjimmy, where is this going? Are we on the same page? I gave you the time line. If the Saints come with Christ at His second coming, how on earth will they ever be judged for sins? They can only be with Him in their new, resurrected bodies. They have alread been judged for rewards at the Bema Judgment seat of rewards, and they participate in the Great White Throne with Christ.

How can they also be judged for sin, when they have already received their new resurrection bodies, and will "forever be with the Lord"? How can they be "judged" when they are sitting with Christ doing the judging?

Please, provide scripture to support your position THAT CHRISTIANS WILL BE JUDGED FOR SIN.

God bless,

Stever :-)

Maybe you can explain to me what I find in God's Word in reference to end time events. Scripture tells me specifically that Christ brings His saints with him at the second coming. Also, Scripture reveals that the saints will be present with Him at the Great White throne to execute Judgment with him.

How can this be, based upon your understanding of escatology?

Kingjimmy's response:
Indeed, Christ will bring His saints with Him at the second coming. Indeed, the saints will be present with Him at the great white throne to execute judgment with Him. There is also the judgment of angels that Paul mentions we will participate in. Scripture is very clear about these things, though the exact nature and timing of the judgment of angels is a little vague. However, Christ so no conflict in all this, as He taught in the parable of the sheep and the goats that the righteous and unrighteous will stand before Him simultaneously. And like the parable of the sheep and goats, we see such in Rev 20.

KingJimmy said:
"Why would their being born again during the tribulation period disqualify them from being spared the things that come upon the earth in those days? Are the promises of Christ to believers not theirs as well?"

Stever's response:

Does being born again today, as we experience disappointment, and failure, and stress, and ridicule, and sickness, and eventually death earn us the right to be raptured out of here? Christ said that we would all experience tribulation (not The Great Tribulation), but to perserve, because He had overcome the world.

John 16:33 "33. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Do you realize that heaven is a much better place than this earth. Earth is the closest thing to heaven that the lost will ever experience. Earth is the closest thing to hell that the saved will ever experience.

Read what Paul had to say about Heaven. Also, read about what takes place in heaven in
Revelation. It is wonderful place, so wonderful that we cannot even imagine it.

God bless,

Stever

P.S. Heaven, a most wonderful place!

2 Cor. 12:1-9
1. It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. 3. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) 4. How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
5. Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.
6. For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. 7. And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Rev 4:10-11
" 10. The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created."

Rev 5:8-14
" 8. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
9. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10. And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
11. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
12. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, honour, and glory, and blessing.
13. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. 14. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever."
