This reminds me of what I have observed in growing tomatoes hydroponically. There is one tiny pest called 'white fly'. They are really tiny, look like regular black flies except they are tiny and white and have wings. Ok, now you see a few and do not think it is serious...a few cannot cause any harm! But wait, ignore it, and boom! you will soon have millions (it seems) in there and now they will be difficult to get rid of. These boogers will sap the life out of the leaves and soil the fruit with their wastes.... Yup, just like sin: let it go and it will get a toe hold in your life from which deliverance will be difficult.

That is a powerful graphic image. We had this guy come around once with pastels and he drew and spoke, I think his name was little john, yes and he was very tall. He explained all about the life of King David and how his fleeting exploration into temptation had resulted in much suffering for all the lives connected to his as well as his own personal grief. It was startling, sort of like your metaphor.
