The scriptures plainly tell us that a prophet sent by God will be 100% correct in his prophecies.
Deuteronomy 18:18-22:
18: I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
19: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
20: But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21: And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
22: When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
Verse 22 plainly tells us a true prophet will be absolutely correct in his declaration. Now where does that place you or me? I think we need to be so very careful that when we speak words pertaining to scripture that we are 100% correct - all the time! If we are unsure then we need to be silent and listen or when we do speak, make sure the listener understands it is only an opinion we are sharing. We discredit the WORD when we speak presumptously.
When I counseled clients at a Crises Pregnancy Center, I was tempted to get very emotional and wanted to use some strong languag but the Holy Spirit checked me on this, telling me to be silent and only say those words He is telling me to. If I would have made some radical comments I could have discredited everything I had said. This has been my experience and I want to say I am still learning...perhaps I need to tell you that by nature I am impulsive and God has been weaning me from that, teaching me to be silent more? and listen more, and learn before I speak. Maybe this is part of the ageing process.:-? Does the admonition Jesus gave in Matthew 12:36,37 speak to this issue? "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37: For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."
The short of the long is that all will be better edified if we would be more careful with our words and listen to the Holy Spirit and say only that which He would have us speak! Psalm 141:3 is my prayer: 3: Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
Why did I make this issue personal? Is it not because we can get so riled up because of current events and are prone to make declarations based on our opinions? In the meantime there will never be a shoretage of self-declared prophets declaring a "thus saith the LORD..." so it would be to our credit to pray, seek the LORD and have Him reveal to us whether this person is from Him or not. But the WORD is true: if his/her prophecies are true they will come to pass exactly as given, otherwise he/she is not speaking for God.
