R. A. Torrey?

Hey everyone...Am I the only R. A. Torrey fan out there? I've been reading his books and sermons for a couple of years, and, in my opinion as someone who has read a lot of books and sermons, he's absolutely fantastic! I've only ever seen a few other preachers who put such a strong emphasis on the power of the Word of God, yet I've only ever talked to three or four people (aside from my family) who were familiar with his work. Thanks... I also found the Torrey sermon you mentioned in streaming audio on the Wheaton College website while I was researching for my own collection. It's a treasure!It's mentioned in his biography that D. L. Moody requested him to preach that sermon (and one other, "The Baptism with the Holy Spirit") so many times that he once said to Moody, "You do know that I have other sermons, don't you?" (Or words to that effect.) I find Torrey's theology of the Holy Spirit to be particularly good, because he is not reacting for or against any movements (unlike many other books on the subject) but merely pointing out what the Bible really teaches. One of the best books I ever read is by RA Torrey and it's called The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit. He wrote alot of good stuff about DL Moody and his prayer life also. I'll have to get some of those titles and post them here sometime.

Not meaning to be arguementative, but I would hardly call the Doctrine of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit "glamourized". The early pentecostal movements were severely persecuted for this belief - not much glamour there. R.A. Torrey, Finney, Wesley and the like were indeed all forerunners of this great truth. We are forever indebted to them for there countless hours of study, and prayer which led them to this revelation. If you're looking for a good Torrey book - "The Power of Prayer" is great and has been recently reprinted. Also, "What the Bible teaches" is a great study resource.Burning,Jeff

If anyone ever gets a chance to read "How to Pray", i would suggest that you do. Its was one of the first Torrey articles i read, and it changed my prayer life.

Yes, I would highly recommend How to Pray by R.A. Torrey also. It is very simple yet profound. Good stuff!
