"..who does not bring this doctrine..."

2. John 9-11
Whosoever transgresses, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
for he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds".

Hi everyone,
what is your understanding of these verses? Is it talking about anyone who is not a believer in Christ, or is it just talking about teachers and preachers?
I´m not quite sure about it. At the church we used to go to, there was a lady who also went to the Universal Life Church. She also came to our evangelical cellgroup meetings. But she always gave out tracts from that other "church", and also partook in the Lord´s Supper in our church.I used to feel real uncomfortable around her, but I didn´t want to go by "feelings".
I´m wondering, does this verse apply to people like her (which I think it does)? Scripture usually tells us to be hospitable, and here it tell us that we shouldn´t even let people into our houses.

Can anybody help me out here?

Hello Bea! Here is how I understand 2 John 9-11: These verses are speaking of people bringing false doctrines into the fellowship of believers. It is a warning against being overly trusting and allowing wolves into the middle of the sheep. There is the danger of allowing deceivers into our midst just because they claim the name of Jesus. This is a call for discernment and a requirement for sound doctrine in the fellowship of the beloved. However, we are to be careful not to get overly critical of people and end up keeping true preachers and teachers out. That is what 3 John is all about.

This verse tells us what doctrine of Christ is:
the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
We must abide in these basic principles.
If one goes contrary to these or violates a any of these basic principles purposefuly and habitualy "hath not God."

He hath both the Father and the Son. There is such an intimate union between the Father and the Son, that he who has just and understanding views of the One has also of the Other.

John 14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

John 14:11-12 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

What is the doctrine of Christ?

First: John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Our Parakleet, our Teacher of Christ.

Then Second, Himself: John 14:18-20 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

"""John 14:18-20 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also."""

""At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.""

At what day? John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Has He manifest Himself to us? John 14:22-24 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

Is this living Water born again in us? Do we have the The Father and the Son abiding in us?

These things were specifically spoken to the Apostles, but the Comforter will come and give this truth to all that the Father has given Jesus Christ.

John 14:25-27 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

He has Said, "He is in us, The Father is in us and the Holy Spirit, Comforter, Teacher is in us also.

Where is this "in us" coming form? This is more that a puff of smoke or just a parable for us to believe. This is the very Doctrine of Christ.

That is, "Christ in you the Hope of Glory".

Colossians 1:16-18 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Then The Revelation of Paul, which is the whole doctrine of Jesus Christ, a new life in the believer, that those that believe may know they are new creations, completely different that any person on this earth has ever been, Christ Ones.

Colossians 1:20-28 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

We must see ourselves dead to the old man we use to be, and we must see ourselves dead to sin, crucified on the cross with Christ and resurrected to new life in Christ, knowing that it is no longer we who live but Christ who lives in us and the life we now live we live by the life and faith of the Son of God that is born again in us by the Spirit and the Living Water Said He would give us.

Galatians 2:16-20 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

This is not the Doctrine of Christ, this is just the beginning principles of getting to the full stature of our salvation. Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Lets not stay in the elementary principles of salvation, but go on unto perfection by the Christ that is in us.

This is the Doctrine of Christ. "Christ in you the Hope of Glory"

I used to feel real uncomfortable around her, but I didn´t want to go by "feelings".
Wise, if they are left to themselves, but your un-comfortability was accurate, just as your bringing forth these verses are.

Thanks for the enlightenment as well. Had heard of this ... construct, the ULC before but never really looked at it.

http://www.ulchq.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Life_Church

I recalled the 'anybody can become a minister' certificate process, but didn't realize the extent of the ... absurd. It would be more credible to try and buy your groceries with Monopoly money.

The context of the whole chapter is emphasized by a contrast,

2Jo 1:1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

2Jo 1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

2Jo 1:3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

2Jo 1:4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

Both truth and love ...

2Jo 1:5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

And then the defining of what love is ...

2Jo 1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

Appropriately and almost ironically to what you have described, this comment from John Gill;

2Jo 1:7 - For many deceivers are entered into the world,.... By whom are meant false teachers, who are described by their quality, "deceivers", deceitful workers, pretending to be ministers of Christ, to have a: value for truth, a love for souls, and a view to the glory of God, but lie in wait to deceive, and handle the word of God deceitfully; and by their quantity or number, "many", and so likely to do much mischief; and by the place where they were, they were "entered into the world"; or "gone out into the world", as the Alexandrian copy and some others, and the Vulgate Latin and Syriac versions read; See Gill on 1Jo_4:1; and by their tenet,

Certainly the word 'minister' carries a variety of definitions, but to masquerade under the covering of another word 'church' and abuse the all inclusive 'universal' is to say everything while stating nothing.

...who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

This has always caused a bit of a wiggle, because even those with an ordination from below can make this sort of statement, i.e.;

Jam 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Without overly complicating the matter, Gill again ...

who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh; these were not the Jews who denied that Jesus was the Christ, though they would not allow that Christ was come in the flesh; but these were some who bore the Christian name, and professed to believe in Jesus Christ, but would not own that he was really incarnate, or assumed a true human nature, only in appearance; and denied that he took true and real flesh of the virgin, but only seemed to do so; and these are confuted by the apostle, 1Jo_1:1; and upon everyone of these he justly fixes the following character.

This is a deceiver and an antichrist; one of the deceivers that were come into the world, and one of the antichrists that were already in it; and who were the forerunners of the man of sin, and in whom the mystery of iniquity already began to work; for antichrist does not design anyone particular individual person, but a set of men, that are contrary to Christ, and opposers of him.

Somewhere around here is a posting on the defining and expression intact within the 'anti-christ', but the word "contrary" is the very root.

2Jo 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

My, a fresh look at this verse again ... How applicable to so much!

2Jo 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

The doctrine of Christ. How all encompassing, it is He who is the head of the universe and the church (His) universal, anything else is contrary and redundantly, anti-christ.

2Jo 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

2Jo 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

2Jo 1:10 - If there come any unto you,.... Under the character of a preacher;

and bring not this doctrine; or does not preach the doctrine of Christ, as before explained, but despises it, and preaches a contrary one:

receive him not into your house; neither into the house of God, suffer him not to preach there; nor into your own house, give him no entertainment there: false teachers always tried to creep into houses, where they served their own turn every way, both by feeding their bellies, and spreading their pernicious doctrines; and therefore such should: be avoided, both publicly and privately; their ministry should not be attended on in the church, or house of God; and they should not be entertained in private houses, and much less caressed:

neither bid him God speed; or give him the usual civil form of salutation, as a good day to you, all hail, all health and prosperity attend you, the Lord be with you, and the like. The word used by the Jews was אישר, which signifies "happiness"; so it is said (i), what do they salute with? אישר, "God speed"; which was forbidden to say to one that was ploughing in the seventh year. The meaning is, that with such no familiar conversation should be had, lest any encouragement should be given them; or it should induce a suspicion in the minds of other saints, that they are in the same sentiments; or it should tend to make others think favourably of them, and be a snare and a stumblingblock to weak Christians.

John Gill

Hard to apologize for the length here, am appreciative of the exercise and what I am gleaning going through it. Under the character of a preacher. The irony of what keeps popping up between what you described and the context of theses passages... perhaps irony is a poor choice of a word. Your spiritual instincts are correct, those that produced the level of discomfort. Having said all that, there still is an "if" back of all of this, which might guide your response to this lady if you happen across her path again. Otherwise, we are at the same crossroads of;

Mat 10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

Or in this case the reverse, receive him not

Thank you guys for your input! It has helped me out a lot. I guess I have to start listening more to this "inner voice", but so many times I´m afraid that it is just my own inner voice talking to me, you know what I mean? So Satan can also deceive us by telling us "Watch out, this might just be your own thinking", am I right? Please excuse me if this is a stupid question, but how can I be sure that what I´m hearing is of God, not of myself!? I do pray and ask the Lord that only His thoughts would come into my mind... But I´m still so afraid to get it mixed up.

crsschk quoted:

who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh; these were not the Jews who denied that Jesus was the Christ, though they would not allow that Christ was come in the flesh; but these were some who bore the Christian name, and professed to believe in Jesus Christ, but would not own that he was really incarnate, or assumed a true human nature, only in appearance; and denied that he took true and real flesh of the virgin, but only seemed to do so; and these are confuted by the apostle, 1Jo_1:1; and upon everyone of these he justly fixes the following character.

This is also what this lady said. She didn´t believe that Jesus Christ was bodily ressurected, and thus we wouldn´t be ressurected in a new body, but only spiritually.
What gets me is that the pastor knew about all this but he still let her take the Lord´s supper in the church. He always said that we still have to love her.

Thanks again! May God bless you richly!

In Christ
Bea
