Dealing with an unclean spirit

sermonindex Nov 12, 2006

I have a friend on my residence hall who has been an enigma for me in many ways. He is a believer and member of my small group--a very gentle guy most of the time, and quiet, but often has fits of uncontrollable, awkward behavior. He may come into my room at 3 in the morning when I am asleep, turn the lights on, laugh in my face, and leave. Often times, he would just run into my room, my door being closed, and start jumping on my bed, laughing, carrying a blank expression on his face. When I try to talk to him, he would laugh it off, ans stare wildly at me. Other times, being a rather strong guy, he would grab me by the hand and drag me to his room, or even tackle me to the ground. A minute later, he would usually apologize or ask me to forgive him and give him a hug, and then will leave my room as quietly and suddenly as he has come in.
I have tried to talk to him about the issue many times. It seems he either cannot or doesn't want to talk about it--usually he does not even respond at all. I've never felt so awkward with anybody--just because I cannot read him; he seems so contemplative, deep. When he is in public, he usually is very composed, even tactful. It is only when it is just him and me, or even some other friend of his, that he starts acting this way. Or when hs is by himself you may occasionally hear him laugh out loudly through his room door or out in the hallway.
It has been hard for me because I have been harsh on him many times, usually rebuking him for his antics, but afterward I have felt remorseful, having so much compassion on him--for he is indeed very lonely. It's been difficult for me to speak the truth in love, to decide when to rebuke and when to tolerate him.
Today, after one of those plunges into my room (he lives across the hall from me), I tried to talk with him most seriously, prayerfully. I questioned his motive. He whispered he didn't have any idea why he did what he did, as if he had blacked out. He said he had to leave.
I have been praying for him, asking the Lord for guidance in this situation. I have never cast out a demon... if this is what I am really facing. Have any of you faced a similar situation? Please pray that I may not get in the Lord's way in this situation. Thanks.

In Christ,
Slavyan

Dear Slavyan,

Speak the name of Jesus to him, sing His praises. Get a reaction. If a demon, your friend's disposition will intensify in which case you will need the Lords power. Why? "And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" Acts 19:15 (KJV)

The Lord will surely be [is] trying to tell you something in all this. Look to Him.

Brother,

I am glad you realize this is a spiritual problem. I would address the perrson himself and tell him he is in bondage to the powers of darkeness and needs freedom in Jesus Christ.

"Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God." -1 John 4:2

I recommend to you highly that you listen to this series on spiritual warfare, it will help you much in handling this situation:

Of all the thousands of people that come to this site, is there no one that has successfully cast out devils to offer advice on what to do?

D
dohzman Nov 19, 2006

brother you need to really do a search before you make a statement like that. We've discussed this topic before. Similar situations where believers see what could be called a "person controled by an evil spirit".

So here's your answer, you have to simply command that demon to depart while standing confidently "in" Christ positionally". This needs to be done by an exercise of faith, I would suggest much prayer and fasting, because its apparent by your request that you haven't come to the knowledge or revelation of who you are in Christ yet, and possibly how truely powerful His name is (ie-how powerful Jesus is). I don't mean that as an insult or slam either, I simply am going by observation in your request.
Mar 16:17 And miraculous signs will follow to those believing these things: in My name they will cast out demons;Mar 16:20 And going out, they proclaimed everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the Word by miraculous signs following. Amen.

Eliphaze talks about spirits in the book of Job, might be good to learn some wisdom here. Its not difficult to cast an unclean spirit out, what's hard is to get the individual filled back up with the Word of God afterwards or his latter end will be seven times worse: Matt 12/LK 11.
Deal with your pride before--during--and after such and encounter and rejoice that "your" name is in the lambs book of life>>>there's a key here that you need to understand in ways the enemy will seek to attack you afterwards, so you MUST exercise the principles laid down by Christ to the letter and that by faith.

I could write a book on this subject, not just from the head and heart but from experience also. Basically just pray and praise the Lord waiting on Him in worship and learn to hear His leading inwardly and through the written Word. Now as to your friend, I don't have the time to seek the Lord for you for him so you'll need to press into Jesus for yourself, I'll leave you with this: Jam 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

All of the above is written trusting that the reader has been born from above by the Spirit of God and is walking in a daily relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. God Bless---Amen, Bro. Daryl

with some experience and teaching i respond to you notme by advising seeking a Pastor or minister who is very seasoned. If they are not full of wisdom and the holy spirit AKA a well doctrined and highly anointed believer, If they are not baptized in the holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues i would count them out. It takes a gift of discerning of evil spirits and much faith and anointing to deal with a person possessed by devils. I will take a discerning guess and say you are either young in the lord or are not familiar with the Power of God. (Acts 1:8)

No believer can be possessed by demons. The body is a temple the Holy Spirit will not share. And you can't be set free and in bondage at the same time. He may say he has faith, but he is not saved. James says "even the devils believe."

When you cast out demons, they can fight, scream, vomit, levitate, slither like a snake, speak in a non holy spirit led language(the devil is an angel too don't forget) They can talk to you and lie to you. They are very deceptive and tricky. they physically attack and can even try to strangle or bite the person who is being delivered of them. Children, unbelievers, and baby christians have no place around this deliverance. The process can take hours and is spiritually and physically exhausting. a demoniac will usually never have only one spirit (at least from my experience) because one sinful spirit opens the door to more sinful spirits. For example. A Spirit of Homosexuality can possess a person who surrenders their body to these acts of sin. Well perhaps they are married to a wife when they commit these acts. Here comes the lying. With such surrender to the sin and the fact that the body is already habitated by another spirit, entrance into the body is easier and power over the body increases. Pretty soon the Tormenting spirit comes into the body and torments the persons mind. A spirit of Fear finds an easy target with such torment. You get where this is going. Pretty soon the person finds they can't control their body and may or may not even notice it. You may see no blatant sin in this persons life because being tormented and afraid is not a sin. There are many other kinds of spirits as well. Possession can take place on a child and can stay for an entire lifetime. Don't try to cast these demons out yourself is my highest recommendation. You will get in a spiritual battle you aren't prepared for and you don't understand. You will hurt yourself and your friend in the process. You need to find somebody who does understand and HAS DEALT WITH IT BEFORE. Most importantly notme, if your friend doesn't want to be delivered of the devils, it won't work.

Also, the advice of praying for the person and worship will work to test the person and the amount of demonic activity. A person with demons can't stand the presence of the holy spirit. Find the most fiery prayer and worship group you can and encourage your friend to come. If they shrink back, refuse prayer, or get tense, its a good sign they are possessed. Also when you pray for a demoniac, if you are a highly anointed individual, they will ball their fists, tense up, or even shake violently. These are called manifestations. Demons hate the Holy spirit.

I hope i have given you some understanding

I will not leave you totally afraid. If you are saved, you are under the blood and have all authority over this person. if your friend is harmful command him to stop in the name of Jesus and he must stop. Jesus said, "I beheld satan fall as lightning to the earth, behold, i give unto you power to tread over serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." These are the scriptures you must learn and believe if you want to exercise your authority. A life of Faith in the word, prayer, worship and fasting as well as surrender will increase the presence of god in your life and your understanding of your rights and abilities as a believer.

Don't be afraid, he can't hurt you, your under the blood. (if you truly are saved)

Matt,

I agreed with most things you said, but not this, brother:

"If they are not baptized in the holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues i would count them out."

First off, many Spirit-filled men never spoke in tongues; Wesley, Moody, Finney, Spurgeon, Sunday, Edwards, Campbell, Ravenhill, etc, etc. But aside from this, I don't believe that being Spirit-baptized is a must to do spiritual warfare.

From personal experience, and I speak from experiencing a baptism of the Spirit, I spoke once to the demons in a man after being saved for about 5 months, and about 2 1/2 years before receiving the promise of the Father. Now I was desperately seeking the Lord, but never had experienced the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and frankly didn't know what it was.

I was in New Orleans walking down the street and my wife wanted to stop in one of those shops that have a bunch of questionable stuff. So I waited near the opening. This man came in, who just made me think, 'if I have ever seen someone with demons, this guy is it.' He spoke things about there being snipers on the roof across the street, had very twisted perverse language, and was spitting out blasphemies and cursing at the store owner, who was telling him to leave. His face was very pale.

So under my breath, no louder than a whisper, I just did what I had read in the Scripture, I commanded that all unclean spirits in or around him come out and be silenced in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The man immediately shut up. He did not say another word. The store owner began pushing him out of the store, and the guy didn't fight back at all. He then turned and walked straight past me and walked out of the store and down the sidewalk.

So I am just simply stating the fact that to go into spiritual battle, you just need to be walking with the Lord. One who has turned over all the sinful habits they can think of, who reads and devours the Word, who loves and desires the Lord Jesus, who prays for daily bread from the heavenly Father, is qualified.

Now if you are saved, but Satan has a foothold in your life, ie: pornography, getting drunk, no prayer or Bible study, ungodly interest in the occult, etc, I would not recommend standing up on someone else's behalf. First remove the log from your own eye.

But remember, the disciples had not known Jesus long, and seemed to be somewhat surprised along with their joy when they said, "And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name."

It does sound spiritual, but if your friend is young and fresh out of a cooped up house, he may just be tipping the bottle and then goofing around with you. I used to act pretty wierd when I was drinking. Yes, demonically influenced, but not possessed.

If you are, or once you are walking with the Lord, get into the Word, pray and fast, and just try placing your hand on him during one of your devotions. Just say that you want to pray for him, and pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse him or something of the like. If it is demonic possession, I would say that they will probably react, and you will know it is bondage.

M
MattChenier Nov 20, 2006

i do know that the authority of a believer is enough to cast out demons. I do express that "the anointing breaketh the yoke of bondage" And a spirit baptized individual is more likely to have the faith and experience needed.

Also, the man you spoke to .. i agree that the demons obeyed you by shutting up. But when a demon leaves a man he doesn't do it kindly. The man doesn't just walk away quietly. I say you dealt well with the situation well. But i don't think the man was delivered.

I also question as to whether you believe you can be baptized in the Holy Ghost without speaking in tongues. I don't believe you can. I believe tongues is the outward evidence as shown multiple time throughout the book of acts. as well as life today.

E
enid Nov 20, 2006

I'm sorry to have to point this out, and it will probably change the direction of the thread, but speaking in tounges is not an essential to casting out unclean spirits.

I believe it was Leonard Ravenhill who said even mormons speak in tounges. Help!

Scripture tells us that, in church, tounges should not be used, unless an interpreter is present.

Besides, where in scripture does it say that Jesus or the disciples spoke in tounges in order to cast out a spirit?

Don't let personal experience override scripture.

If anyone's experience is outside of scripture, question it.

We can pray and be in the word of God, Bible study, fasting, praise and worship, and be ready for those times when an evil spirit needs to be sent packing, to put it mildly.

Whatever we do, do all to the glory of God

God bless.

M
MattChenier Nov 21, 2006

i must say i expressly stated that i recommended a person baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues because of the growth and discernment it brings. Not because it is a requirement. I stated that in my last post. please reread it.

Also mormons don't speak in the tongues the holy spirit gives. The don't have the spirit or salvation.

Also the tongues that isn't meant to be spoken without an interpreter is the gift of tongues, not the personal prayer language that the spirit of god brings us with the baptism in the holy ghost.
"covet to prophesy, forbid not to speak with tongues."

And how would the gift of giving a message in tongues and the interpretation be any use to the church if it was not done in the church. Therefore it would be pointless.

Not to speak in personal prayer tongues would be a missed opportunity of great magnitude. As well as the fact that if you don't have personal prayer tongues, you haven't been baptized in the H.G. Saved yes, but not anointed for ministry. That is why Jesus told the disciples not to go until they had received the promise of the father acts 1. The same should be for us. We should seek this power to aid in our ministry. At least if we ever want to walk in the fullness.

H
HeartSong Nov 21, 2006

Can someone explain to me what speaking in tongues is? If you are praying, and your heart takes over - so that actual words are no longer formed . . . is that it?

M
MattChenier Nov 22, 2006

there is a difference between personal prayer tongues that every person receives when they are baptized in the holy spirit and the the gift of tongues that only some people that are baptized in the holy spirit receive. The gift if tongues is meant for a group or church setting where somebody with the gift of interpretation of tongues can make the message in tongues understood. This interpretation is an exhortation from the spirit of God.

Personal prayer tongues is when the holy spirit swells in you so much it is like an overflow in which the only way to express yourself is by yielding your tongue(which happens to be the hardest thing to yield, which shows surrender to gods spirit) and letting the spirit of god speak through you. This personal prayer tongues is very useful to personal edification during worship and prayer. If you don't speak in this personal prayer language, you aren't baptized in the holy spirit and the spirit of god.

The baptism in the holy spirit is way more than personal prayer tongues. It is a general outpouring of spirit and power into a believers life. Life usually isn't the same after this. Smith wigglesworth is a perfect example.

why didn't jesus speak in tongues, i don't know. I think the anointing of jesus was unique compared to what the believer has. Although i do believe we can do all the miracles he did if we have been empowered and we believe.

Mormons don't speak in the same tongues a believer speaks in. Neither do muslims. The tongues of the believer are given as the spirit gives utterance. Mormons don't have the spirit of god and neither do muslims. Their tongues are not of God.

also 1 cor. i 13 i think it is, explains that tongues is actually a language. Not jibberish. Its the language of angels.

Brethren,

Thank you all for the feedback. It's been precious to me. Indeed, the situation is still far from being resolved. I have been walking in the Spirit, trusting in the Lord to achieve His ends in this.

I have a few questions though, some of which I asked Matt in a pm:

I have never seen a demon being cast out. Can you describe it for me?

Also, I do not know a spirit-baptized congregation, or believers that speak in tongues and talk about spiritual warfare, here in Greensboro. Perhaps one reason is that I have not looked for them, neither have I sought the Lord's guidance. But for one thing, I do not know how necessary the speaking in tongues is and how exactly it functions, as well as the other gifts of the Spirit that Paul writes about in 1 Corinthians. I know I have spontaneously prayed in tongues at times--without even knowing the reason why, as if the Lord pushed me and I couldn't restrain myself. Can you recommend me any good literature on this subject?

Also, I see myself as a sort of leader here in college--although I am still young in the faith,
I have been working with/discipling some of my Christian friends. Some of them have been open to hear and discuss the baptism of the Spirit, others have been resistant. We've been reading R.A. Torrey's The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit . I feel I need somebody who knows the Spirit to guide me and teach me in this process. I have not really been discipled by men and it's been a struggle. I feel a great need, however, for the truth to be preached powerfully. Our campus ministers are not guided by the Holy Spirit, but I do not want to bring division.

And a last thing (I may be straying from the original thread here): I am going to a student missions conference in three weeks, where I will meet a lot of people. I am praying that the Lord uses me powerfully. What is the most important thing to know going to such a place? (I am expecting to meet with a lot of people who do not know about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.) Thanks.

May the grace of God abound in you all,
Slav

I have never seen a demon being cast out. Can you describe it for me?

What are you looking for here? I would suggest that you should be satisfied with the accurate scriptural accounts outlined in the Holy writ.Eliphaze talks about spirits in the book of Job, might be good to learn some wisdom here and also re-read the accounts of the gospels.

Also, I do not know a spirit-baptized congregation, or believers that speak in tongues and talk about spiritual warfare, here in Greensboro

I do know of some there in your own back yard.

Perhaps one reason is that I have not looked for them, neither have I sought the Lord's guidance.

:-?

I am praying that the Lord uses me powerfully.

O' man I feel you need to sit in silence and just learn to hear the voice of God, you think your teachers aren't being lead of the Holy Spirit, the conference you're attending ? now you want to be used of God, but you have no clue about the spiritual warfare and the casting out of demons :-? and you want to be used?????? fine-but first read and re-read the Word of God until you at least have a good handle on that! Than DO what i suggested above in MUCH!!!!!! prayer with fasting. Right now you have too many things going on "IN" you, you need to get grounded in Christ and His Written and spoken word before you move out to the deep.

What is the most important thing to know going to such a place?

Go willing to learn and hear the Word of God, might be a good place to start.

If you want to be powerful and great in God's sight and the Kingdom of God than you have to become nothing, no reputation, you need to be willing to serve others without observation, the great signs and wonders being wrapped in swaddling clothes as it were and observed by the lowiliest of God's children. Works done not from a pulpit - or as satan placed Jesus on a pinnacle---but works done out of the sight of human eyes but done non-the-less in the sight of God.
I somehow feel though that the posting of what I have here may fall on deaf ears, I hope not, for your sake brother.

sermonindex Dec 6, 2006

Dear Dohzman,

Thank you for your response. I feel some unnecessary astonishment in it--perhaps because you do not know me well and might have misunderstood my intent in writing the post. I will need to re-read it, however, and pray over those things.

And again I thank you. I don't know much, but I know that the Lord is by no means done with me, and I am cool with that. I know where He has taken me from: I know His signs and wonders, and I know that He is with me all the time.

I also realize that I do not really know His Word as I should. I see from your post that it is somewhat of an expectation for me to have read the passage in Job--one that is also in the Word: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15). I will not turn a deaf ear to you. I know that "no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it"(Heb.12:11).

I will stop here... The passage that comes to mind at this moment is in Hebrews: "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

Dear Brother Dohzman, I know that the Scriptures cannot be broken, that God's promises are faithful, even when I am unfaithful... I do not want to justify myself here... I simply know how far the Lord has brought me in the last few months. I know that "by grace I am who I am." I know that nothing can separate me from His love. I know that I can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one with my shield of faith. I have had the faith of a child before Him and He has never let me down. I also know I do not want to take His grace in vain. And I believe this is enough--without faith we cannot please God. I know that my past and my future do not matter--they do not even exist--but all that matters is that I am walking with Him in every present moment, abiding in Him, making sure that I am in the faith. I can never deserve His grace.

And again I thank God that you had the boldness to say the things you did say. I need to be still, fast, pray. I will trust the Lord for the rest. I am in the wilderness.

In Christ,
Slav

Hi Notme,

I have had a little experience with the demonic, both being delivered and seeing deliverance. This has caused me to search out the scriptures, as I come from a Baptist background, where I was never exposed or led to belive in demonic possession/opression - it was simply just not talked about. Since I have found and learnt that one of the most common ways demons will enter people is through unforgiveness - unforgiveness opens the door to demons - they have a right to enter a person...God hands them over

Matthew 6:14 - 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 18:21-35 - Parable of the unmerciful servant
32"Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."

The jailers are demons - their purpose is to torture. I do belive that christians can be demon possessed - that in a certain part (or room) of their lives, they have not allowed the Holy Spirit to rule, have hardened hearts towards God, and through sin allowed a demon to rule.

There are other avenues also, a big one is involvement in the occult.

2 Corinthians 10:4 says the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing (pretentions) that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

Unless your friend WANTS to be delivered, unless he is sick of this happening and living like that and is willing to commit his life fully to Christ, there is no point you trying to deliver him...spend time on your knees in prayer and fasting, bind and ask God to pull down the strongholds, powers and principalities at work in and through his life, for we aren't fighting against flesh and blood!

To sum up, in your prayer time make sure that you are free of any unforgiveness, ask God to reveal to you any and He will. I hope this helps some, often it is a long tough road.

If anyone finds problems or wrongs in what I have written, please let me know. I am willing to learn and find out more...

God Bless,
Marcy

Are some people saying on this thread that Satan cannot deceive the believer if the "believer" happens to believe a lie even due to ignorance? That Satan cannot eventually possess the believer with a lie if it is given a place to lodge within?
Is there a reason why we are not to give the devil a foothold...or guard our own hearts...or examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith?
Are we not in a war with the powers of darkness? Are we not told to continually abide in Christ and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ?
WAKEUP SLEEPY "CHRISTIANS" :-?
The war is there and it is real whether you or me believe there is one to fight or not!!!!!!!!!!
Are we not commanded to take up armour and fight the good fight of faith?

Here is an update on my situation:

Last night the guy--or this friend of mine, as I would call him--threatened me and my brother in Christ, albeit indirectly, that he was going to kill us. It was as if Satan was speaking through him: full of lies and deceit, unable to restrain himself, unwilling to listen. I knew this wasn't the guy I had known.

We called our campus safety after the Lord gave us a verse after we prayed for a while and opened the Scriptures. The verse we opened to was Mark 6:10-11. About shaking the dust off our feet if people are unwilling to listen to us. And this happened when we were afraid for our lives to back to our residence hall.

My brother shared he had a dream a few months ago about his guy who swaggered holding a gun in his hand and shooting--and that before my brother knew anything particular about the other guy's background. And last night we happened to stay at a family off campus. Interestingly, two nights ago my brother had a dream in which he was like an orphan in some upper-middle class person's home. And he felt very welcome, but a little ashamed. He also knew that the host had many daughters in the house, but no sons. Then the host told my brother that he knew about his grandmother that passed away in 1998 and that she (an fervent unbeliever) had owed people $100,000.

We know that the guy that threatened us is afraid for his life. I think he owes money... I think that a gang he has connections to him may want to kill him. He has been acting like the world has ended--without hope, without peace.

And last night we ended up staying in this family, in their big house, they welcomed us, we were a little afraid and ashamed. The host has four daughters.

I know that the Lord's will will be done in this. Please pray for us and our situation: that the Lord gives each a measure of faith, and enables us to do as He pleases. Thanks.

In Christ,
Slav

P.S. Is it possible for a demon-possessed man to really accept Christ and for the Holy Spirit to dwell in him unless we pray for deliverance or cast the demons out first?

M
MattChenier Dec 8, 2006

no it is not possible for a demon possessed man to be saved. they may believe, but "even the devils believe" as James says in James 2.

Their is no new birth. They can't be led by the spirit of god and controlled by a spirit of satan. "As many as are led by the spirit of god, these are the sons of God." Romans

No man can serve two masters for he will love the one and hate the other

The only reason a disciple can be possessed is if he leaves the covering of the blood and opens his life to sin.

How can a demon live in a body with the holy spirit. I think we need to recognize that demons are not "ideas" or "spiritual strongholds" or simply something that a person can't conquer in their life. A demon is a spirit, a person, a being that has feelings and thoughts like any other being. They can talk and feel.

Mt 8:29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
Mt 8:30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
Mt 8:31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.

What communion hath light with darkness. What concord hath the children of God with the children of belial.

If you are possessed by a demon, its because you have left the blood of jesus and opened yourself to the devil.
