We are experiencing abundant grace. Praise God!
When Eli came home from Vacation Bible School last night, he was feeling very low and unsure that he had done the right thing by doing nothing about the demand for money. He feared the extortionists would carry out their threat. After I told him I had learned the intended drop site had been busily occupied by a swarm of road workers at two o'clock, he felt much better. Not only that, but police were carrying out a routine traffic check within sight of where he was supposed to leave the package. No robber in his right mind would have expected him to leave money there under those circumstances. We believe God again orchestrated yesterday's events according to His perfect plan for us.
That reminds me. I haven't told you the story about what God did last time we had an extortion. I will try really hard to write it and send it to you today.
Yesterday just after Eli left for Vacation Bible School, a neighbor came to ask for him. He told Paul four policemen were at his house and the chief wanted to talk with Eli or me. I went to the neighbor's . The police chief from Candelaria took me aside and told me someone who has a high regard for us told them about our problem just a few minutes before two o'clock. They went to the site of the money drop, but since they didn't see Eli there, they came to our neighbor's and sent for us. They didn't want to put us in danger by coming to our house. He asked a few questions, offered his services and protection, and asked us to help in the investigation by providing a copy of the threatening letter. He said he was the one who captured Maximo Mendez in the act of stealing. (By the way, Maximo was released a day or two later because he is a minor.)
The support of our church family encourages us very much. Yesterday afternoon a group of sisters met in the home of Menno Mast to pray for us from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. (the time of the deadline). Last night just after Eli arrived home from the mountain, Brother Julian from the El Paste church called to see if he had arrived safely. He said they were very concerned about him and had been praying for him as he traveled.
We are also much encouraged by your MANY e-mails assuring us of your continued prayers. We feel unworthy of it all, but it is truly delightful to be so upheld and surrounded by the power of all your prayers.
We had a good night last night. Eli was able to sleep better and awoke refreshed. Thank you very much for your prayers.
