OH BETHLEHEM, you seem so small
To be the chosen earthly place
Where should be born the Lord of all
Who came to show the world His grace.
Is it not strange that on that night
When strangers filled each home and inn,
Your humblest stable gained the right
To shelter Christ, who saves from sin?
OH BETHLEHEM, you favored town.
Both earth and heaven know your name,
For in your stable God came down
To lift the sinner from his shame.
God chooses still the lowest place;
Not many noble trust His Son.
'Tis in the meek of Adam's race
The greatest work of God is done.
OH BETHLEHEM, let me like thee
Be small enough for God to bless,
That all I meet may see in me
The Savior whom my lips confess.
