Nice to see at least one positive comment....
A word to you gentleman in our faith. Brennan Manning doesn't claim to be spouting canon scripture, he is merely talking to the lot of people (like me) who don't feel like they have it all together. Brennan is not light on sin, as a previous person mentioned. However, he does present the gospel to the sinner that grace and forgiveness is merely a decision away and how powerful the love of God is! I was ministered to by the Ragamuffin Gospel in more ways than you can imagine.
As far as you asking people what book is appropriate and "what God would approve of," I challenge you to think about what you are asking. You are literally asking what book God would stamp "OK" for your spiritual growth. Are you serious?
God doesnt care what we read, man. He just wants us to come to him. Period. Im sure he would prefer if we read and meditate on his word above all things.
I agree that most stuff in bookstores now is fluff. Im a huge Tozer fan. And I highly recommend his "The Pursuit of God." Also I dont agree with everything by him, but Bonhoeffers stuff is good too. Thats the thing, your not gonna agree with everything, man. Manning you might think is crap, but a lot of people have actually grown closer to Jesus because he has reminded them they are loved. And a lot of church culture overlooks that. And remember, the way our world has become, a lot of fatherless kids out there are gonna need reminded they have a father that loves them. This is becoming a more relevant message as the days and years progress.
I encourage you to research stuff before just asking one persons stamp of approval on a book. Manning was pulled from a lifestyle of alcoholism, and sure, probably is Catholic in a lot of ways, but I encourage you to take what he can teach. A broken down priest who is married and is a recovering alcoholic can teach me a lot about Grace I would think, dont you? Id go to him before most evangelical "better than you" types. Maybe the answer lies in identifying with the broken and poor. Just my two cents. No insult intended. I just do not appreciate when we dismiss someone like him before giving him a chance.
