Jesus - who had the Spirit without measure, who was the radiance of God and exact representation of the Father's nature - walked this earth, working miracles, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, glorifying the Father, doing good and YET, had critics.
Often times the Pharisees would call Jesus "The ruler of the demons" or "Out of his mind" or "Beside himself" or "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"
Amazing how one can be so blind to criticize the Savior of mankind. Now the critics weren't prostitutes, alcoholics, drug addicts or murderers. They were men who knew the entire Law! They were men who were awaiting a coming Messiah. They were men that society esteemed and held great reputation for their exposition of the Law and supposed commitment to it.
We then see in the book of Acts when the Spirit of God was poured out on the 120, we see the outsiders taking notice to the glory of God that flooded that upper room. However we also see mockers. The mockers said "They are full of new wine" Now these mockers weren't the scum of the earth in the world's eyes, but again - the religious elite! Men who knew the text through and through, yet missed the Spirit of the text.
Revival history repeats itself. Every glorious outpouring of God had critics. The critics would mock the manifestations that took place among certain people. They would mock the emotions that certain people had in expressing their passion for Jesus. They would mock. Were these mockers sinners? No it was those within the church of Jesus Christ.
I believe in such a thing as discernment. I believe we need to distinguish between carnality and Spirit, and the devil. However, I believe we also should not judge a move of God based on personal experience or our traditional theology. What does Scripture say? Does the entire move of God stand completely contrary to Scripture?
Are we ready for revival in America? I'm sure if we are walking upright, holy and in the Spirit of God we will. But if we are of those who are textual believers, knowng Scripture through and through yet lacking the power from on high, we may very well be those who criticize.
