Alarming! Pornography Statistics.

sermonindex Jan 6, 2007

* At 12 billion a year, the revenues of the porn industry in the U.S. are bigger than the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball combined. Worldwide porn sales are reported to be 57 billion. To put this in perspective, Microsoft, who sells the operating system used on most of the computers in the world (in addition to other software) reported sales of 36.8 billion in 2004.
Family Safe Media

* According to the Justice Department, in 1998 there were 28,000 X-rated Web sites generating 925 million dollars in revenue. Within just three years this number increased to 280,000 X-rated Web sites.

* 60% of all website visits are sexual in nature
MSNBC Survey 2000

* In December of 2000, the National Coalition to Protect Children and Families surveyed 5 Christian Campuses to see how the next generation of believers was doing with sexual purity:
48% of males admitted to current porn use
68% of males said they intentionally viewed a sexually explicit site at the school

* In a survey of over 500 Christian men at a men's retreat, over 90% admitted that they were feeling disconnected from God because lust, porn, or fantasy had gained a foothold in their lives.
As reported in an article on Pastors.com by Kenny Luck.

51% of Pastors say Internet pornography is a possible temptation. 37% say it is a current struggle. 4 in 10 pastors have visited a porn website.
~Christianity Today, Leadership survey, Dec 2001

Of those polled at a Promise Keepers event, 50% said they had checked out pornographic material within the past week.

Here is a good article by George Barna to read:

There are many statistics to show that Christians are living the same way that the heathen unbelieving nations are also. The wrath of God is upon the children of disobedience but rather we are not being "children of obedience" but proclaiming that we are saved and forgiven but not seeing a victory over these things. Some people are accepting this "vile sin" as normal because of everyone else around them. We need holiness and to call upon the Lord with other faithful brothers and sisters.

"This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves... lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God." - 2 Timothy 3:1,4b

"For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication." - 1 Thessalonians 4:3

"Now the wors of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idoltary, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I told you in times past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." - Galatians 5:18-21

"But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you as becometh saints." - Ephesians 5:3

"For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." - Ephesians 5:5

Jesus said, "He who overcomes I will give ........"

We need to be reminded that the battle is not with Satan but with our own redeemed natures not yet submitted to the Father; not yet submitted to the way of the cross that our souls be purified, to be in union with Him, for the sake of Jesus who we profess to love. In fact, aren't we told that the battle is not ours that we wait to have the temptation removed from us while all the while the scripture tells us these things:

Ephes. 5:5 (KJV)
For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

1 Tim. 6:11 (KJV)
:.....follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

2 Tim. 2:22 (KJV)
Flee also youthful lusts: follow after righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

This all spoken by Paul to the redeemed.

I believe this "sin" is one of the major reasons why the Church does not have revival in North America. We have massive idols of pleasure setup in our hearts.

No matter what your experience is or what the experience of multitudes of Christians the truth stands firm:

"For he that is dead is freed from sin." - Romans 6:7

This is a actual possibly reality to experience and walk in.

Mattie Jan 8, 2007

the ONLY thing that keeps any of us from living such a lifestyle is the Spirit of God who has worked holiness into our own hearts. Otherwise we'd be just like them.

While I'm grieved at the statistics I also remind myself to remain humble before God and never to feel there is good in my own nature apart from God (Rom 7:18 - there's NO good thing in my fleshly nature). Remembering it is a day to day walk with the Spirit of God that sustains us. Christ in me the hope of glory.

One of my pastors, Pastor Dave Wilkerson once said, one of the greatest miracles the world has yet to see is a holy remnant stand strong in those perverse of generations. Amen and so be it Lord!

brethren
this is indeed a BIG issue with men in the Church. the enemy has found a chink and is milking it for what it's worth. this indeed is a weakness for many. for me it was a struggle as the enemy used it as a hook to drag me around. one of the issues is that in young boys who have been abused sexually early on ( i was a victim of such) the enemy (shameless) can and will exploit it any way he can so you feel condemned and unworthy of redemption.

bless God that for us there is NO condemnation in Christ!

there was an account of a conference for pastors at a certain hotel at which most of the rooms were booked by pastors. when people checked out, so much porn had been bought it broke the records at that place. God help us!

when the heathen see this they take occasion to blaspheme God on our account. also many of our attempts to reach out to homosexuals and such can get derailed because of this sin in our own camp. let us all be purged.

If there was a true prophet in America or Canada, I believe he would preach against:

1. Sensuality (Fornication, Adultery, Pornography).
2. Obesity (abudance of food)
3. Idleness (spiritually in the Church)
4. False Cults (Romanism, Mormonism, etc)

Many of these things are not reconignized as "major" problems in the Church. I believe that the issue of this thread is such a big issue we have no idea what we are dealing with.

Amen Greg! Those things need to be preached on and hard! How can we call ourselves children of God if we don't have victory over the world, the flesh and the devil? A good article for anyone to read regarding pornography is one written by Michael Pearl. It is a hard read if you are "struggling" with this, but you may need to be shocked out of it. God Bless you and deliver you as you read it. It is called, Pornography- Road To Hell. Just copy and paste:

The following is a video that contains audio from John Piper’s sermon “The importance of knowing sin”. It speaks to mortification of sin. I hope this message is viewed with a comprehension of who the believer is in union with Christ. John Owen’s mortification of sin is very helpful here, if this is your vice. The struggle in my life with sexual purity has taught me that the road to victory is paved with keeping the realities of Justification by Faith and its consequences for the believer ever before my mind. If you are struggling you MUST do the same!

Somewhat related here...anyone read Ray Comfort's column for December 11, titled Good news for Pedophiles?

I am not surprised. So many times in recent days I've been vexed by the rotten, filthy conversations others are having, often young people, very loudy I might add, while traveling on public transportation. The other night on the train I was nearly angry enough to blurt out "shut your mouth young man!".

I didn't, but this is becomming a regular thing. It was bad enough when it was regular profanity but now its going way beyond that. And it is young, old, even women, people wearing scrubs that I would assume are in the health care profession!

Agghhh!

"I believe that the issue of this thread is such a big issue we have no idea what we are dealing with."

This can only get worse if it goes on as is. You can't tell me you are going to expose these young minds to such things and not do lasting damage. I know from experience of having been delivered from the bondage of it when I was converted. I know of the lasting damage done.

This filth is saturating our society. You walk through center city Philadlphia and it looks like almost every newstand has pornography prominently displayed. It is not at all hidden from view. Ohh, it may not be called pornography but it is!! Same thing at one of the train stations I pass through called Frankford Terminal. Same thing at convience stores, even super markets. And children are looking at this trash!

I would like to appoligise to everyone for the tone of my last post in this thread. It was not appropriate for me to speak in this setting, in that manner, on this subject, or to in any way imply that I am at all holier than anyone, in and of myself - I am certainly, most assuredly, not.

I ask for forgiveness of anyone that I may have offended as well.

Thank you,

Christopher Joel Dandrow

This is the link to add your name to ray's petition. It's very quick, but I recommend personal emails if possible.

On another note, when I was an unbeliever I was deeply enslaved by this destructive sin. It not only totally depraved my heart, mind, and imagination especially, but has scared me for life. No doubt Jesus Christ has healed the wound, and, though I won't get into Calvinistic debate, I know of a surety it was God's sovereign grace even before I confessed him that he prevented me(though I tried hard) to act out what I had witnessed on a computer screen thousands of times. When you are drowning in such sin, even your view of women changes; you view every single one even remotely attractive as sex objects. Not that only, but you can’t even make just regular friendships with them--everything is lust.

A prophet will no doubt denounce this, and for this sin to be so prevalent in "Christian" schools and fellowships is saddening, because once engulfed by this sin, any religious man loses his testimony.

Lets make matters a little worse for internet porn. Our government is trying at this time to get a .xxx domain on the web. It's way way too easy to get now. But just think how the stats will jump and how far down the toilet America will plunge then. Sad, very sad!

I just listened today to the message The Power of Prayer given by Keith Daniel and keep thinking how it bears so much upon the content of this thread. There is a very powerfull testimony in particular some way into the message about this very subject.

Here is a link for those who may not have heard/seen it yet

Former Porn Actress and Prostitute - now a woman of God

Look what God did in this woman's life. In the midst of this darkness God is rescuing people and this womans testemony shows God's faithfulness to restore.

Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.
