Our souls are constantly looking for some grounds of merit to stand upon before God, or some goodness to lay hold of by which we may secure for ourselves even the faintest hint of glory. Yet, if we are to be in truth the supernatural work of God which the Bible gives forth that we should be, we must, as I remember reading from Spurgeon, be something akin to a stone - suspended in mid-air: that is, something which is both dull and completely powerless to remain above ground, heavenward, on its own.
