Tongues were NOT for women

J
JGB321 Feb 5, 2007

I know this is a controversial subject (hence why I wrote on it), but my study into the NT, interestingly showed me that women did NOT receive this apostolic gift:

I didn't go read your article, but I don't need to. If tongues aren't for women, then I am very deceived, because I pray in tongues every day and I have for about 25 years. I can't see stopping it now. It's what comes out when I feel desperate for God. Maybe that's because I'm a woman. I don't know. :-P

How do you know this is from God?

JGB321,

Hopefully, more knowledgeable and wise Christians will build on my point when I say that your article is lacking a certain feeling that I could not find in word nor my heart: love.

What I would also like to challenge is whether or not you or your wife are actually living in the Spirit. This is not to insult you or make accusations, but you are the one who wrote the article.

The reason I express concern and reserve about you is because I have been in different countries, cultures, and classes where I have heard, seen, and am witness to healings and speaking of tongues by not only men, but WOMEN.

(I also do not see the importance to BOLD AND CAPITALIZE your same point in your article over and over again, as if we the readers could not remember your point.)

Obviously, I am not a women and I am sure some women on here will have something to reply on the subject. It seems to me that you were raised in a Catholic church and have learned some scriptures, but like my pastor mentioned today about a man who visited him last week.

The man was wronged by some 'christians' (I do not know the details), but the man, in a vow of revenge, read the Bible over 500 times. After the 200th time, he realized the truth in the Word, but did not let go of his anger towards those particular 'christians', so he continued to refuse Jesus. Now he knows the entire Bible, but he is still not a christian. He is starting to understand what it takes to be a 'True Christian', but because of the years of rage, it will take time and he has to be patient.

My point is that no matter how much we think we know or understand, sometimes we know nothing at all or have 'learned' so much that we have actually started going in the wrong direction.

You put a lot of work into your article and seem to be very proud, but next time before you declare it to the world, take a poll, or at least pray about it to God, in love for the truth.

God Bless those that receive the Spirit,
BrianMira

JGB321,

How do you know you are saved?

J
JGB321 Feb 5, 2007

Good Morning BrianMira and thank you for your kind words. I am glad you are not one of those people that sits on the fence.

If you would like to discuss some of my points (I cross-reference many verses), than please do. Otherwise it won't be edifying to spend time deciding whether or not I am a Christian.

Brother JB321,

Well, actually I am probably up to 10+ hours ahead of you, because I am in Korea, so it would be 'Good Evening', however I feel a sense of sarcasim to your reply.

My words were not meant to be kind, nor rude, but of concern and reserve for the article you wrote. And if you were to read my 'kind' words you would understand that I said nothing about whether or not you are a Chistian. I said that I would challenge to see if you and your wife were filled with the 'Holy' Spirit.

I mentioned the man my pastor talked about, not to point at you as a non-christian, rather to show that people who can read and remember verses are not always knowledgeable or wise about their meaning.

I know you mean well, but I just feel your overall point about tongues and women are not entirely true.

God Bless You and Your Wife,
Brian

Good Evening BrianMira,

As I said if you would like to highlight from Scripture or my article where I am wrong, please do.

Love in Christ

Whilst I have only briefly read the article, I do think, even with the use of scripture, you are in error.

Anyone can use scripture to suit their own biases.

Jehovah witnesses do it, as do Mormons.

So, I'll read it thoroughly, and get back to you.

God bless.

The reason I asked if you knew if you were saved was because you asked Spitfire how she knew her speaking in tongues was from God.

They are both rhetorical questions.

I wanted to ascertain where spitfire got this “gift” from, because I can’t find it in Scripture.

Hi everyone,

Dear JGB321, you mentioned this...

I know this is a controversial subject

Brother, that is very true. But then the thought keeps coming to mind 'why bring it up?' I just wonder if this is what the community at SI needs at this time, you know what I mean? Someone used to have a signiture here which read in part, something to the effect of

controversy for the sake of controversy is sin

Now that may not at all be your intention here, but even still, if we know that something definitely will create controversy among the sheep of God, it seems we might want to stay far away from it? I mean, even from a natural point of view, I can not imagine that a shepherd would deal very kindly with someone disturbing his flock, you know? What if doing so sent one of those little sheep off running, and they were caught and torn by wolves?

Well brother, I hope this will be helpfull for us to consider. Thanks,

Christopher

JGB321,

No, thank you. I will leave that to those who will do it much better than I. Like I mentioned, I was waiting for more knowledgeable and wiser people than myself to refute you and as it stands, two people are, so I will sit back and let them prove my point. Scripture, although, wonderful, can fill someone up with a false sense of the truth, which in turn leads to...something.

God Bless... I truly mean it.
Brian

Afternoon Christopher,

Well, I think this subject needs some airing. I am not however here just for the sake of argumentation.

Look forward to future dialogue.

JGB321,

Are you able to speak in tongues?

Sincerely,
Brian

No, thankfully I was never caught up in the tongues movement.

But then the thought keeps coming to mind 'why bring it up?' I just wonder if this is what the community at SI needs at this time, you know what I mean? Someone used to have a signiture here which read in part, something to the effect of

controversy for the sake of controversy is sin

Which is very much the issue and the problem. Something quite spurious of motivation here. If the following be true;

By now, it should be obvious to the reader that I do not hold to gift of tongues being applicable today, nor do I believe in healings, prophecies or visions. As I believe in the total sufficiency of Sola Scriptura - the correct theological term for me therefore would be a cessationist. However I wish the reader to know, that I have been as impartial and open-minded as possible, while researching this far from exhaustive article.

Then to go into a long discourse about Tongues were NOT for women is pointless. You start from a bias and go on to prove nothing.

For Scripture to omit women being present when this mighty gift arrived, one must conclude that they were not to be the recipients of it.

You err and do not know the scriptures.

Act 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

Act 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Act 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

You overlook the obvious to support your bias.
Nor do you have the foggiest idea of the cultural settings, the hermeneutics of reading scripture nor even the plainest and simplest matters of tense and meaning of what is meant by 'man' as you have fallaciously attempted to use it. To attempt to deduce by what you think is not being said because it is not addressed in specific terms suitable to your bias is to misread and misunderstand the scriptures.

2Pe 3:16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Regrettably too many people make the Bible match their feelings when in reality they should be using the Bible to test their feelings and experiences.

Your words. There is no point to this at all, not here. Carry on your dialouge on your own site. Post locked.
