Evangelism Explosion

The church I attend has an upcoming seminar on sharing your faith using some tools under the name of Evangelism Explosion. I'm not familar with this group but the seminar comes with the billing of, "how to share your faith in a non-threatening way."

This billing caused some concerns for me in regards to presenting the "easy believism" type of gospel. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with EE and would care to comment on my concerns.

This class was offered once at our church by a local bible college at night. I still have the text book. The problem is the systematic way in which folk are taken point by point in order to get them to pray a prayer or something. The problem with this is that it marginalizes the need for the Holy Spirit to be drawing the person or dealing with them. Those ministering (evangelizing) are encouraged to pray beforehand, etc., but I am still very concerned about the whole salvation by proof-text approach. I am not saying that folk cannot be born again in this way. It just takes the emphasis off areas that are very important.

We learned Evangelism Explosion in Bible college. It's philosophy/theology is a bit like Ray Comforts. Though I'm not a big fan of "methods" in regard to evangelism, I think overall it is a sound system by which one can glean many useful principles. It is far from "easy believism."

By non-threatening, it simply teaches ways of doing ice-breakers and the like so not as to appear rude. Like, if you are doing door knocking, taking a "survey" so as to get a feel for the spiritual temp of the person. It's like a "good person test." Covers things like sin, the law, the incarnation, the deity of Christ, and other basic elements of the gospel.

I am interested in learning more about EE as well, since the pastor has asked me to consider teaching it. All I know is WOTM. So better learn something else

I'm not a huge fan of "methods" either but I know there are some useful tools in these programs.

I'm of the opinion that if you are born-again you're going to want to talk about Jesus with others and you won't necessarily need a script to run through. It's like a newly engaged young woman with a shiny new ring, you won't have to ask her about it, the love in her heart will be readily expressed.
