All Christians should be vegetarians.

sermonindex Feb 14, 2007

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_vegetarianism

The practice of raising animals for food is killing the planet, consumption of meat is exacting a large toll on our public health and the systems that support it, and worldwide, those at the lowest end of the economic sector are paying the most in terms of health and wellbeing.

Moreover, it was not God's intention for us, anyway.

PS. I've posted material related to this before, but I continue to be confronted with this issue. Recently it was in the news that animals kept for food are the number one source of atmospheric carbondioxide, and thus global warming. bub

Glad to see you're back... I see nothing has changed.

BEEF... it's what's for dinner. (Thank God!)

Moreover, it was not God's intention for us, anyway.

The source of a statement like that is complete ignorance of the scripture.

1Ti 4:1 ΒΆ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

And here I was thinking that Tennessee was synonymous with BBQ -I guess I was mistaken. Unless you like BBQ tofu.

Bubba, I agree with you, we need to be better stewards of what God has given us -this planet.

I don't necessarily think it's a sin to eat meat -Jesus had a passover dinner, and what do they eat on passover? Lamb!

Paul said he liked meat, but he would consider being a vegetarian too... why? Because he wanted to reach narrow minded vegetarians with the Gospel.

There are a lot of reasons not to eat meat, but I think you need to find better feet to stand on.

My father works for the federal government for public works and does a lot of work on sustainability -I think we need to consider what sastainable agricultural and livestock practices are. We need to create a clean and sustainable way to raise cattle, I'm sure there is one or else the Jews wouldn't have had so many cattle to sacrifice!

All Christians should be vegetarians is your opinion. It hasn't been commanded by God. The Scriptures cleary show that meat is okay to be eaten since the flood.

Genesis 1:27-31
27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Genesis 9:1-4
1And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
2And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
3Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
4But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

Thats a statement I can agree with. I am a conservationist... NOT an environmentalist. I love nature, I hike and camp and kayak all the time, and I hunt. I believe in taking care of nature. But environmentalism is very cult-like and based on junk science.

It also is evolution based. And Bubba is an evolutionist, so no surprise there.

Before everyone takes a lot of their time trying to argue scripture with Bubba... Bubba does not believe in a literal interpretation of scripture. (i.e. doesnt believe the Bible).

Bubba is a great guy, and we've had some spirited discussions before... all very positive... but to argue scripture with him is pointless because he doesnt believe in it. At least not the way 95% of us here do.

Moreover, it was not God's intention for us, anyway.

Lets look at this in light of Scripture, i need only be brief;

Matthew 26:17-21
Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

Here we see that the Lord kept and ate the Passover, but what was it ?

Exodus 12:1-11

And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for a house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD's passover

So Jesus ate roast Lamb

Lets look at a different example from our Lord's time on the earth,

Luke 24:41-43

And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of a honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them.

Jesus also ate fish, which is not a vegetable.

Hi Bubba...

You might also want to convince other animals with sharp teeth to stop eating meat. However, I think that vegetarian lions wouldn't last very long in the wild (or captivity).

Acts 10:9-16

Matt,

genesis 1:29 is a command to abstain from animal flesh given to mankind before the fall from grace. we were only given permission to eat animals after the fall. so you could say that it is okay for those who prefer this later state to keep it up. (this is not to say that vegetarianism improves anyone's spiritual condition, but that God created us as vegetarians and that shouldn't be ignored.) Bub

PS. yes, i said God created us.. we agree on this, its just the details of how this happened that we differ upon.

oh boy.

Bubba, between your command, and some of the other threads, which I'm not even gonna reference, all I gotta pray is this:

Lord, save me from your followers, in Jesus Name I pray , amen.

So maybe I should get rid of the 60 pounds of venison, 20 pounds of beef I have in the freezer.

wait, I got a great idea, lemme build a stone altar in the yard, defrost all my sinful meat, and make a burnt offering to God......oh wait, I don't have to: Jesus was the final offering.

Cmon, Bubba, in due respect, get real.

Bubba is mislead, but some of the comments here are uncalled for. It is ill humour that christians should not partake in.

Bubba came in here with a seriousness, believing seriously in what he stated. we should respond back with all seriosness leading him lovingly to the truth. When I said lovingly, I do not mean as the world, that is void of truth, but our motive should be filled with love desiring much for bubba to see.

krispy,

i grew up among avid hunting and fishing sportsmen and women in north dakota and minnesota and have respect for the responsible hunter/fisherman. they don't need some hardened soul to confine and feed animals unnaturally (feeding meat and offal to vegetarian cattle!?) in order to put food on the table.

my elder neighbor in minnesota when growing up, don horn, was a railroad man and avid hunter fisherman. always had a freezer full of venison and walleye that he'd caught and cleaned himself. loved the man and respect him and other naturalist hunter/fishers much.

but it's too easy to just pick up meat at the corner grocer, and people have lost touch with the process of putting meat on the table. the processes that put meat on the table today are sinful and are of great harm to those who partake of it, as well as others.

Christians are to love others and today the act of participating in the market for commercial meat is a voilation of this. it is to discount the rights of others.

Good point...

Jesus was not affected by the fall and he ate meat.
...and Peter was commanded to "kill and eat" even AFTER the resurrection. Acts 10:9-16

I understand the argument against "animal cruelty" in a sense that some torturous killing of animals as a means of preserving flavor might not be moral. Additionally, there are arguments concerning hunting as a sport versus hunting as a means of obtaining food. Regardless, I feel that raising LIVESTOCK is a very valid means of providing food to a large group (such as, uh, the United States).

The quote from Genesis might have been valid for the Garden of Eden (even though it is unclear as a possible command to refrain from meat). Since we no longer live in the garden, we need the protein and sustenance to survive and thrive that comes from the eating of meat. After all, the Lord provided us teeth expressly designed for tearing flesh.

As for evidence that such consumption is destroying our planet, we should always be careful to avoid waste. Yet it seems to be a stretch to label meat-eaters as a cause of such destruction. A professor friend of mine is embarking on a mission to breed rabbits in third world nations. Rabbits could be a great source of protein in areas that are desperate for such nourishment. They are low maintenance, and are quite "fruitful." He has begun this project with the Tarahumara in the Sierra Madre Occidental, as well as in areas of Africa.

I like Krispy's Big Bang theory.

Not to jibe you Bubbaguy, but this thread reminded me of some hillbilly logic in response to vegetarians...

If the good Lord didn't intend for us to eat animals, then why did he make 'em out of meat?
