Hollywood fame or Holy family?

sermonindex Feb 22, 2007

I am seeking advice...

A few months ago, I was sent a picture of my cousin's 2 or 3 year old girl. She is cute and when I first saw her I thought she was Shirley Temple like.

A few days ago, I received an email from my mother that stated that my (2nd) cousin was entered in Regis and Kelly Lives' baby contest (for those of you who do not know...it is a very popular American morning show from New York).

As of Wednesday, she one 1 of the top 5 to appear on the show. I did not see the show, nor have I been updated on any progress. Apparently, they will announce the 'winner' Friday (it's on their website).

The advice I am seeking is what, if anything, I should do? When I received the email from my mom, my heart dropped. I know my cousin and his wife well enough to know that God is not first on any list that they might have.

With all the problems you see out of hollywood, especially with child stars, I cannot find anything good coming out of putting your child in this type of 'flesh' show. Most people have heard of Anna Nicole Smith, and I see that as a possibility for any person that seeks fame and fortune.

I know that I may be 'jumping the gun' a little, because she is only about three and she hasn't won anything yet, but I am wondering about what my responsibility might be. I have been praying and I will continue to do so, but I also feel that I should talk with my cousin. "I do not want blood on my hands."

...............I don't know.................

..........anything would be something.......

..................help, please..............

God Bless those that help those in need,
BrianMira

Hi Brian,

The advice I am seeking is what, if anything, I should do?

Prayer is certainly the first order of business here. The situation is difficult because parents are proud of their children and some put great stock in these types of things. To speak against it would be easily misinterpreted. You need the wisdom of God to say or not say anything. Prayer is the most pressing need. God can change hearts and open eyes when we would only have made a mess of things- even when we had the best intentions.

Brother,
as someone working in the entertainment industry, it would be my heartfelt and experienced advice to counsel them to avoid involving their child with anything in the entertainment industry as children.

Beacuse working as an actor is an adult job, let me give it to you as a parable. Lets say you have a young man in liitle league, he wants to be a pitcher, at 9, you're not going to teach him the tricks, are you? How to throw a curve, a splitter, a knuckleball?

no, it would hurt his arm, and what they do with child actors is teach them how to "mug", make faces, be cute, and as a craft, as an art, that is NOT how you do it. That is why you see very few kid actors go past into being successful adult actors, they don't know "mechanics", plus it being an adult JOB, they lose their precious childhood. I've seen it more than once, its a bad scene.

My beautiful 11 year old boy, casting directors, agents, etc have asked me when I'm going to "get him into the business"? He's a beautiful boy, handsome, vocabulary of a 20 year old, (minus the cursing) but him and I have had extensive chats on this subject, and I told him the same pitcher analogy I told you, along with a few other horror stories I've seen, and my answer to these is

"like, never".

he wants a law degree, and I feel that he's gonna suprise everybody and become a pastor.

I dont know why I feel it, I just do.

But tell them the entertainment industry is an ugly business for adults and much worse for children. I know what I'm talking about, I speak from experience.

In Jesus' love, neil

To me, Robert and Neil gave some sound advice Brian. I think any possible offense you might give to these excited parents will be offset by their realization that you are showing concern and interest for their child. Humility is your doorway here brother. (Just resist the all-too common temptation to be the unmarried expert on child-rearing;-) ...)

Years ago, my mother-in-law once scolded me for not having a fence to keep our little ones from finding their way to a large pond in the front yard. I didn't exactly ask her for the 'input' but I was still thankful for her interest and concern for the welfare of my family.

Family is precious.
