I thought I got saved when I was nineteen and moved into a small apartment with a few other Christians when I started college. We had all grown up with the “big hair bands” and loved rock music. It was Christian rock or nothing; with two exceptions. Huey Lewis and the News, because he was just cool like that, and Henry Mancini. I mean who doesn’t like the Pink Panther and Peter Gunn theme songs?
I remember going to a lot of Christian rock concerts in those days, but only one band sticks out for having what seemed like genuine concern for my soul. Guardian. I remember after just a few songs the lead guitar player held up his hand and stopped the show because he wanted to talk to the audience. He sat down with his legs hanging off the stage and just looked at everyone. He made direct eye contact with many of us and smiled; it was like he was getting to know us.
He slowly began telling us a story about his little boy, and how he had almost been electrocuted by playing with a lamp cord and outlet. He had tears in his eyes as he reflected upon what almost happened to his only son. He looked at us again for a very long time before continuing. It was very sobering to see this “rock star” shedding tears while telling us we would all die someday, and that we should be prepared before it was too late. He truly wept while he pleaded for us to accept Christ as our Lord.
I was born again in 2004 and have not, as of today, seen such an open an honest display of concern as I did that day fifteen years ago. I’m still moved by how much that man cared about me…and my soul.
I guess I fall into the “old fogy” category, but nowadays all worldly sounding music…to be honest…makes me cringe. I now have a hard time eating lunch in a restaurant that is playing secular music to loud; I often leave without finishing or just take it with me, which brings me to my point.
The other day I heard Huey Lewis and the News singing “The Power of Love”. Wow, what a tune. Huey’s music is like no other, he really had it together I told myself has my head started to move to the beat. I left that restaurant a few minutes later with a tear in my eye. Huey had completely missed out on the true power of love.
That song, as well as others, brings back many memories, but they don’t stay around very long. When I look back I don’t see the good times anymore, I now see the truth. I was living as an enemy of God and helping Satan broad cast his lies over the speakers of my stereo.
I don’t know anything about the band Guardian. I have no idea as to their names, if they are still around, or how spiritual they are…or ever were. But I can say one thing…I’ve seen the power of love.
Peace be with you all
TJ
