I have a quick question concerning the differences between translations in specific Revelation 16:5. I am posting this knowing full well that it is dangerous to do so. Let me make this clear, I am not trying to start a KJV-Modern translation debate. If one ensues then I will not be held responsible :eek: .
Why are the modern translations different than the KJV and NKJV?
Revelation 16:5
English Standard Version (ESV)
“And I heard the angel in charge of the waters say,
"Just are you, O Holy One, who is and who was,
for you brought these judgments.”
New International Version (NIV)
“Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:
"You are just in these judgments,
you who are and who were, the Holy One,
because you have so judged;”
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
“And I heard the angel of the waters saying, "Righteous are You, who are and who were, O Holy One, because You judged these things;”
King James Version (KJV)
“And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.”
New King James Version (NKJV)
“And I heard the angel of the waters saying:
“ You are righteous, O Lord,
The One who is and who was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.”
I am not a Greek scholar (I am learning the basics right now) but I notice that the (KJV) Textus Receptus (TR) contains the Greek word for Lord in this verse when the others do not. The KJV also adds "and shalt be" that I do not find even in the TR.
