I will be taking a year long (two semester) Old Testament class this fall and would like to read a good survey book, along with the Old Testament itself, this summer. Any recommendations?
Thank you all in advance.

Hey I am currently reading an Old testament survey recommended to be by a friend who went to Heritage Bible College in Cambirdge Ontario. It is very easy to read and he really enjoyed it.
Title: Encountering the Old Testament
Authors: Bill T. Arnold, Bryan E. Beyer
ISBN: 0-8010-2176-6
Publisher: Baker Books
I read the New Testament survey by this publisher and it was great. I am enjoying this one as well.
God bless
I am a Biblical Studies student at Masters College and one of the books we have to read is,
A Survey of Old Testament Introduction
Author: Gleason L Archer
ISBN: 080248201-5
Hope this helps.

Just read the Old Testament. Look for how God works to save the remnant. Look for the ways God is faithful to bring about what He promises. Look for the story of how "faith" saves the remnant.

Tj, I'm surprised that your OT course doesn't include a textbook. You may wish to hunt for this one:
"The Old Testament Speaks" by Schultz (Harper and Row)
It's been used in evangelical colleges for many years, and you may find a used one the net.
You may also enjoy studying some historical background.
ex:
"A Survey of Israel's History" by Leon Wood (Zondervan 1986)
"The World of Ancient Israel" by Clements (Cambridge Press, 1989
Tj, May God guide and bless your studies. The OT is awesome!
