Past Jewish Popes?

sermonindex May 9, 2007

I am wondering: does anyone know if there have been Jewish Popes?

I

Apostle Peter who the Catholics claim as the first pope would definitely be considered Jewish.

I just checked through the first couple 'popes' or Bishops of Rome... and none of the 6 or so that followed Peter were Jewish background believers, they were all Latin ethnic believers.

Did a quick search on 'jewish pope' in google, and it said there hasn't been a single jewish background believer as pope in nearly two thousand years... so i'm assuming that means since the time of Peter.

Found this:

Was there ever a Jewish pope?

St. Peter was Jewish. The only other "pope" generally acknowledged from a Jewish family is Anacletus II (1130), an antipope.

Likely, other early popes were from Jewish families, but the records are not conclusive. Speculation on other Jewish Popes include St.Zosimus (417-418), based on his father's name of Abram. Evaristus (100-109) has also been mentioned based on some Pope Pius V writings.

Thanks ian and Jay.

You now have me curious as to why you were curious.
Ah! ;-) (I'm grinning!) I hadn't planned to reveal that, but, now I realise it sounds like there have been absolutely none so far, that makes this even more interesting!

I have some other posts to make about a dream I had after the wedding I went to on the last Saturday of April...

Let me do a bit of my own research before answering. I'll come back to this, maybe another day, as my time online is limited.

Thanks for your patience.

There cannot be ANY Jewish popes. For some one to be a practicing Catholic pope, he has to accept Christ as Savior, and King of Kings. A true Jew rejects Christ completely and His name is a disdain to them. So how can a Jew with rejection of Christ rule a church based on the gospel message of Christ.

Thoughts? Comments?

:-o

I gotta say your response stops me in my tracks!

You believe this?

What about Paul's definition of a true Jew?

Romans 2:29
but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.

So how can a Jew with rejection of Christ rule a church based on the gospel message of Christ.
lamuskrat,

Do you really believe the Catholic church preaches the 'gospel message of Christ'?

I think dorcas is referring to a Jew in the cultural sense. Certainly no person of the Jewish faith can be a 'pope' in the Catholic church, but someone who a Jewish heritage can be. (If the Romans let them)

sermonindex May 10, 2007

Wow, there is some really bad terminology being batted around here.

First off... the Catholic Church is not based on the gospel of Jesus Christ, as one person has asserted. It is based on the false religion of pagan idoltry and works. The mass is a blasphemey.

So considering this, it really doesnt matter if there were ever any Jewish Popes because the papacy is a spiritually impotent entity.

I think we can all agree here that Peter was never a "pope". He was never the head of any church, Jesus has always been the head of the church. In fact, contrary to Catholic teachings, there is absolutely zero evidence that Peter even set foot in Rome... therefore, he is not even buried in that big idolatrous cathedral they have built in Rome over his supposed "grave".

I think if Peter could see what the Catholic Church has done in his name he would probably have one of those moments where he spoke his mind... and had to ask forgiveness later.

Sooo... how is it relevent to Biblical Christianity if there ever has been any Jews to hold the murderous office of Pope? It's about as relevent as asking how many presidents there have been in the Mormon church... who cares?

Just my 2 cents worth...

Krispy

Thank you Krispy for your two cents.

I for one agree that the office of pope is completely contrary to scripture. However, I would like to know where Dorcas is taking this discussion.

Jay,

I'll explain, soon, what was in my mind when I posted the thread.

But, let me say this - that I find it hard to believe there have been no Jewish converts to Catholicism, although we may never know of them.

lamustrat,

I hope my amazement has not put you off replying, or, (even) rethinking what you said about Jews.... who, surely, generation after generation have had their converts to Christ?

L
lamuskrat May 10, 2007

No I have not been turned off by your remarks.

As KRISPY was so alert to catch, maybe I spoke in to broad of terms. I also concurr with him that the catholic church is basically a false religion. My point was/is a PRACTICING ORTHODOX (NOT BORN AGAIN)Jew rejects Christ TOTALLY. Therefore he cannot take office in a position that claims to be CHRISTIAN.

Guess I over simplified. I am not one to write long dissertations.

Oh good. :-)

Thanks for this clarification. I had not even thought my question could be read as if it was referring to practising orthodox Jews. I was assuming some sort of religious alignment with Christian representation - though I also agree with what Krispy said about Catholicism being a false religion. However, I must add that there are random Catholics who have a relationship with the Lord, and we trust Him to judge them righteously when the Day comes.

i don't know about Popes, but there's at least one Jewish modern day Cardinal ...
Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger

(Lustiger is the only Catholic prelate in modern times who was born, and is still considered, Jewish)

This cardinal was at one time thought maybe to be the next Pope after JP II ...

Brother, that is very interesting! Thank you!

EDIT: from the Wikipedia link:

'A first-rate communicator, Lustiger was particularly attentive to the media and developed Catholic radio and television channels. Lustiger also created a new seminary for the training of priests, by-passing the existing arrangements...'

Jay,

Thank you for your patience.

The reason I asked the question is that some time ago, I read:

Daniel 11:37*
Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

Not being familiar with the detail of this prophecy (still), 'God of his fathers' made me think immediately there must be a Hebrew connection.

The 'nor the desire of women' made me think of homosexual leanings. These may be overt (in this case), or at least can be promoted or suppressed through celibacy.

But, I see that Daniel's references to 'saints' could make 'God of his fathers' a reference to a person of Christian (fore)fathers, including gentile background. (We know no-one is born into this world, already a Christian), However, to Daniel, 'God of his fathers' might be more likely to mean 'Jewish'.

One thing is certain, I believe; there is an implication it will be possible to recognise this* combination of signs when they occur.

This reminds me of something Jesus says in John 10:

12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

I was fascinated to realise that a hireling has enough spiritual perception to recognise a wolf when he sees one.

How many Christians can be taken in both by the hireling and the wolf? (Or, do we really believe that can't happen to us?)

In fact, contrary to Catholic teachings, there is absolutely zero evidence that Peter even set foot in Rome...

Hello ??? The only way you could say that is Boettner, KrispyKritter. There are many evidences that Peter was in Rome. Irenaeus, Against Heresies, is one. But Ireaneus was Catholic so I guess he should be discounted. Shoot, just discount everybody until 1517, they were all Catholic ! No historical evidences matter whatsoever :-(

Linn, are you thinking that there's a possibility that either the Antichrist, (or the False Prophet?) of Revelation could be a Jewish pope?

If so it would make sense.

You mentioned the Daniel reference of him having no interest in women as perhaps meaning he would be homosexual, but that wouldn't necessarily be so. They say that power, for some people, is a far more important driving force than even the sexual drive. In fact I've heard that some have such a lust for power that they aren't all that interested in sex. Though they may use sex to manipulate and control (especially women (like Jezebel? She had her husband under her thumb, however she did it!)

Blessings

I agree, but, whoever it is, it is a male who will be known as someone who is not interested in women, or this would not be one of the defining features revealed to Daniel.

.. are you thinking that there's a possibility that either the Antichrist... of Revelation could be a Jewish pope?
It was a thought - a way of making sense of 'God of his fathers' being a term applied by Daniel, and the commonly held historic view that the Roman church is (at the very least), complicit with 'Antichrist'.

(or the False Prophet?)
I hadn't considered this, but it is obvious that the false prophet is antiChrist, or he would not be false.
