Why John wrote so much about love?

I came across an extra-biblical quote where the apostle John was asked about why he wrote so much about love, and he responded. Could anybody tell me perhaps what his response was and where I can find that quote? I came across it once (on SI??), but have since lost it. I remember it being quite good, and am thinking of using it for a teaching.
