following and serving

i sometimes feel that following and serving are similiar. can i have good examples of hindrances that keep us from following god all the way and hindrances that keep us from serving god all the way. for example, if we date non christians this will be a hindrance, but to which would it fall more into? this is because i am going to help teach a class on following and serving and i dont know which things from the bible would suit best for following and serving.

This may not be what you are looking for, but, I think there are many pictures of what it means to follow, in the Old Testament, around battles, particularly in David's story, when they were won by obedience to a variety of differing instructions. There is also Lot's wife and its comparison with putting one's hand to the plough and not looking back.

Whereas, 'he also serves who only stands and waits' (from a hymn), includes the amazing things Joshua had to do with Moses, Mary sitting at Jesus' feet and Jesus washing the disciples' feet as an example of what He had in mind for His followers.

Of course, as the Son, who obeyed every thing His Father asked of Him, there is no greater exposition or demonstration of what's expected.
