False reasons for being a Christian

I'm puting together a tract based on all of the false reasons people give for being a Christian. I witness often in seeking to proclaim the gospel. It's wonderful to find someone who will say their a Christian, but when you ask what they base that on it's usually works-based.

I'm a good person.
I go to church.
I trust in my denomination.

Wondering if people could list other false reasons they have encountered.

My aim is to destroy the false and replace it with the biblical truth. How you actually become a Christian. The truth is so needed in times when a "six-second pray'll get you there."

One I can think of is that the person's parents were Christians, or that it is in their heritage, or even that they live in a supposedly Christian nation. In essence, people believe they are the Christ's followers simply because of association. That is not how the kingdom works.

How about, "I believe Jesus is they only way of salvation so I prayed a prayer and trusted Him to saved me from hell. I began to attend church, study my bible, and witness. I even pray passionately. But wait? What is repentance? Personally I think abortion is okay, lust is natural but shouldn't be done too much, and evil movies are good for entertainment as long as I don't thoroughly enjoy the bad parts I still watch. One thing is for sure, I don't believe in supernatural conversion!!!"

THEOPENLIFE--I plan on hitting repentance in the salvation section.

KRISPY--Hadn't thought about the "He's got a wonderful plan for me" thing. Do you get that one alot?

Personally I like the people with the fish sign on their car and the cross on their neck and "In God We Trust" plates. However, when you ask them about how they were saved they get offended.

Another one I get is I was baptized.

So, How do we counter these untruthes with scriptural truth? Any takers? I'm a good person is simple--scripture is replete with there are none good. Well, I'd just like to open it up, learn and be faithful to see truely saved, on fire CHRISTIANS out there!

KRISPY--Yeah, I've been out of the mainstream for some time, I've forgotten that phrase! Saved by the plan. I agree Jesus does have a wonderful plan called repentence.

COREY--I appreciate that prayer of Jesus! I hadn't thought about the rich doctrine in that for some time. I personally like John 8:47

"He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God." KJV

It's amazing how many "Christians" will not tolerate the scriptures.

So far I have:
Salvation by morality (goodness)
Salvation by works (or the appearance of works)
Salvation by association (family or demographics)
Salvation by religion or religious activies (including traditions of man)
Salvation by church membership
Salvation by philosophy (mental assent regarding Jesus)--perhaps this would be more theology. Okay what would it be called now.

Keep them coming if you can think of any other ways.

randomly came across this thread. Posted a few thoughts, which I guess is a bit long, a truth ful feedback can help me share things that can be more edifying.
had a look at the comments and I guess there were two areas that were being covered here.

- Reasons for coming to Christ
Well I get a feel that the thread was started for the first reason, however somewhere in between we overlapped with second one. (I may be wrong)
It is true that many who choose the wrong reason for coming to Christ does not meet with Christ i.e. does not become Christians, though they might think they have.
However at the same time I belive that not all seek Christ and find HIM in noble pursuit of HIM or the truth.
For HE found us when we were haters of God.
He found us/We sought HIM when we were in a mess and often as the last refuge.
The sick and the demon possed sought after Christ to be healed, not to gain Christ. And yet in HIS love, HE met our need that was rooted in 'I'.
Yes we came with our selfish agenda, but HE did for us more than we thought could possibly happen, more than we asked, even though we cared not for HIM and dint know what it took for HIM to give us what HE gave us. And that giving includes that new desire that He plants in us, that cries out dear Lord help me to love YOU, to seek You for nothing else but YOU.

Joh 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Thinking one is onverted when one is not or hoping to get converted for the wrong reason are maybe just a step behind once upon a time genuinely converted. Of what use if today I know HIM not. Today I do not seek to spend time with HIM hidden than with anyone else or anything else. To spend time is to listen to what HE has to say, to value HIS word and to meditate on it and on how HE is and HIS example, and to speak back honestly of where we stand and where we would want to be. And when all other things or persons become an intrusion to be patiently dealt with in love.
This is what it means to be truly Christs.
Not how we started, but how we end up.
Not to forget the right theology, not to forget right doctrine, but to end in one exhortation, to spend more and more of our lives (not just time) with HIM. To be able to say, " I KNOW HIM, who has called me ..."
If this is not where we are heading then wahtever one says, are just "false reasons people give for being a Christian."

Well, there is a video by Paul washer that talks just about that.A false reason that people give is the fact that a preacher may be telling them that once saved, they are saved for eternity. Another reason may be because everybody else professing to Know Christ and be Christians are doing the same sinful things they do. Just to add some to the list.
