The Problem with “The Pill”

(and other chemical birth controls) by Aimee Young

According to the 1999 Physician’s Desk Reference, there are three ways the modern birth control pills work (and actually any chemical birth control such as, but not limited to, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Ortho Evra, Norplant, or Depo-Provera):

1. The primary function is to “prevent conception by suppressing ovulation”.

2. Another function is in “thickening the cervical mucus to inhibit sperm penetration…slowing the movement of the ovum through the fallopian tubes.”

3. The last function is “altering the endometrium…(which reduces the likelihood of implantation)" (p. 2201, 713)

Before continuing, I need to mention that I am operating on the premise that life begins when the ovum is fertilized- even before implantation- a point that even many pro-choice people will concede, though they will not acknowledge the human life as a human person.

P“According to FDA information, the typical pregnancy rate for women using the pill is 5 percent.

This means that of every 100 women using the pill, 5 will be pregnant within 12 months.

About 10.4 million American women use the pill; thus there are more than 500,000 pregnancies per year among these pill users.” (www.physiciansforlife.org) P

There is an important term to know- “breakthrough ovulation.” Breakthrough ovulation is when a woman ovulates even while she is taking ovulation-inhibiting drugs, like modern chemical birth control. As seen in the above quote, the breakthrough ovulation rate can be at least 5% in the estrogen/progestin combination pills (some sources say up to 50%), and up to a staggering 81% in the low-dosage “mini pill.” Breakthrough ovulations also have high percentages in Norplant, Depo-Provera, and IUDs. (IUDs actually have a 100% breakthrough ovulation rate, as it does not inhibit ovulation at all-it merely turns the endometrium into a hostile environment to keep it from the ability to sustain life.)

This means that, depending on which chemical birth control method one might use, anywhere from 5%-81% of the time an ovary will ovulate- creating the possibility for life to conceive. Even if the sperm makes it through to the ovum and fertilizes it, this new little life has a lot of hurdles to overcome in order to survive. First it has to survive the slowed down movement in the fallopian tubes. Many will starve to death at this stage without the nourishment of the womb. If somehow it makes it through to the uterus, it will find the endometrium in a hard, thin, shriveled state- not at all conducive for implantation and nourishment. An occasional 5-10 day old human life will survive this harsh environment, but many will not and will end up getting flushed out of the uterus at the time of the next menstruation- without the mother even knowing about it. When this happens, the birth control is no longer merely a contraceptive- it is an abortaficient.

Randy Alcorn, a respected Christian minister, concludes this: “The Pill is used by about fourteen million American women each year and sixty million women internationally. Thus, even an infinitesimally low portion (say one-hundredth of one percent) of 780 million Pill cycles per year globally could represent tens of thousands of unborn children lost to this form of chemical abortion annually. How many young lives have to be jeopardized for prolife believers to question the ethics of using the Pill? This is an issue with profound moral implications for those believing we are called to protect the lives of children.”

In light of these facts, we as pro-life Christians need to prayerfully re-evaluate the moral aspects of using the pill or any form of birth control that may allow conception to take place.

For more information please read Randy Alcorn’s 115 page booklet "Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions?"(found at www.epm.org/books.html) or visit these websites where this information was gleaned- they contain wealth of knowledge on this subject- much more than could be fit on this one page:

You know, way back before the pill, most women wouldn't consent to recreational sex - because they might get pregnant.

Illegitimate children were a huge burden to single mothers. Society frowned upon mother and child. And the mother would be strapped for cash all her life.

Nowadays, with recreational sex all the rage, if the pill fails, there's always abortion...

Dreadful.

I have heard that all oral contraceptives have abortive elements to them.

That is a heavy piece of truth.

I agree this a hard thing to think about.
But if it is killing babies is very sad.
even more to add to 45 millions babies.
But it would those who didn't even no..
Millions..

Just a thought... but how is losing a child unintentionally with a breakthrough ovation different than losing a child by any number of other things that unintentionally cause women to lose a pregnancy? Any other number of prescription drugs, or even over the counter stuff could have the same result.

KingJimmy,

I suppose the difference would be 1.) If she knew that the particular drugs would have that effect and 2.) If she were willing to compromise the potential life of a viable soul because she deemed the odds "small enough."

One may argue that any number of variables could also endanger the potential child - diet, necessary medications, etc. , the difference being that none of these are done specifically to alter the environment of the womb so as to make it inhospitable to a fertilized egg. The difference then is that the "pill" is taken specifically to distort the natural process of child-growth. And the question is, does the woman realize the risk of killing a fertilized child by doing so?

My thoughts, whatever they may add,

2.) If she were willing to compromise the potential life of a viable soul because she deemed the odds "small enough."

Then perhaps women who are sexually active shouldn't take most medicines or drink soda? As such things are very likely to cause an unknown of pregnancy to unintentionally fail.

I think the issue here is intent.

I think the issue here is intent.

For some, the intent is sex without cost.

I think the bigger problem is the sense of invulnerability the pill gives couples. The focus becomes pleasure instead of responsibility.

So, as the pill, like every other contraceptive, is only 95% - 99% effective, when the inevitable pregnancy occurs they are taken by surprise, mortified by the responsibility thrust upon them - they may commit abortion.

I can't pass judgement on whether couples should or should not use the pill (I've known more than a few woman who swore the pill reduced the pain/bloating/duration of their periods).

The danger is that couples aren't prepared for the inevitable. I think.

This is true in so many ways. This what I was taught in high school. You can have sex as long you are safe, and get on the pill. Young girl and thought it as a safe way out. They are not married, they don't want to have a baby. I can see this use of the pill as not good

But there those who are married and love each other, and they feel they are just not ready for aother child. they have no idea that pill could be killing their baby.

This a hard thought, but if true, the pill could cause abortion. But more so it has.
how babies have been killed bu the pill?

So is it right to have the choice to kill your baby even if it a pill, or abortion?
when do you claim it has life?

I can't pass judgement on whether couples should or should not use the pill (I've known more than a few woman who swore the pill reduced the pain/bloating/duration of their periods).

I agree I can't tell a women what she should do, what I would want to give all the facts I have.

Just a thought...
If there was a women. who was going to get a
abortion, and I said nothing, not telling her it going to kill her baby. I would not being a voice for that baby. Now I if the pill does kill, then it would be the same right, if it going to kill, we need to say something
This a life that has no voice?

The danger is that couples aren't prepared for the inevitable. I think.

I think the real issue here is intent.

For the most part, agreed. Couples should know all the facts and, praise God, posts like this are helping spread awareness.

Get ready... I think all women (and men) who are sexually active ought to be conducting themselves in as disciplined a manner as the Lord leads to prepare their bodies for the possibilities of children. Men should maintain their health for the sake of working to provide safety and security for the home, just as Paul taught to provide for the family.

Women ought likewise avoid those things which the Lord reveals to their consciences to be plainly adverse to their health, for the sake of the ministry, husbands, and potential children.

Pretty extreme? Only so extreme as the Lord sets it upon a willing conscience I suppose! :-)

Interesting discussion, and an important one.
God bless us in the renewing of knowledge!

I know of some women who say the same. Some women have periods that are very intense, of which the pill greatly minimizes their intensity and duration thereof. I also know of some women who have a hormone imbalance, of which it is said that that the pill helps correct, so they don't do things like lose their hair, etc.

Personally I'd rather a man get a vasectomy which poses no side effects, than endanger his wife with the proven side effects of most birth control pills.

Just a thought.

But is that even a good reason to use birth control pills? Or is it an excuse? One needs to go to the root of the problems mentioned and not just treat the symptoms. Most likely the woman is estrogen dominate or low thyroid. Do birth control pills fix that? Even if they do, is that the best way to treat it?

I don't know how anyone can use the pill or other "devices" knowing they have abortive elements.......

I agree with this: Personally I'd rather a man get a vasectomy which poses no side effects, than endanger his wife with the proven side effects of most birth control pills. from theopenlife

i read an article in a "Christian" Swedish newspaper and they claimed in Europe there is a abortion every 26 seconds..........

cant imagine the result is much different elsewhere.
