Saints,
I did a Catholic burial yesterday in the sweltering Texas heat. In the middle of the mass I went to the rectory and asked the young ladies if the church had a water fountain. They said no, but they could give me some "holy water". I laughed and said you must be joking. One of them went into a back room and returned with a cup of cold water. As I took the cup, one of the ladies gave me a tract that said:
"Holy Water - A Means of Spiritual Wealth"
They said that "the spirits are gonna come out of you if you drink that". I smiled and thanked them for the water and sat down to read the tract they gave me. I reproduce it here for the SI readership. I knew the RCC was messed up...but this was something else. When you see the term "Holy Water" think of the blood, repentance, and saving faith in Christ and juggle those thoughts around and try to see what I saw:
"Holy Water is a sacrmental that remits venial sin. Because of the blessing attached to it, The Holy Church strongly urges its use upon Her children, especially when dangers threaten, such as fire, storms, sickness, discord and other calamities. Every Catholic home should always have a supply of Holy Water.
"If we could realize now - as we shall after death - the many benefits which may be derived from Holy Water, we would use it far more frequently, and with greater faith and reverence. Holy Water has its great power and efficacy from the prayers of the Church. The following are some of the petitions the priest makes to God when he blesses the water:
[i]"O God...grant that this creature of Thine (Holy Water) may be endowed with divine grace to drive away devils and to cast out diseases, that whatever in houses or possessions of the faithful may be sprinkled by this Holy Water may be freed from everything unclean, and delivered from that which is hurtful. Let everything that threatens the safety or peace of the dwellers therein be banished by the sprinkling of this Holy Water so that health which they seek by calling upon Thy Holy Name may be guarded from all assault..."
"The devil hates Holy Water because of its power over him. He cannot long abide in a place or person that is often sprinkled with Holy Water. Holy Water, when sprinkled with faith and piety, can move the Sacred Heart to bless your loved ones, present or absent, and protect them from all harm of soul and body.
"When worry and fear take possession of you, give your dear one the benefit of the Church's prayer. Only in Purgatory can one understand how ardently a poor soul longs for Holy Water. If we desire to make a host of intercessors for ourselves, let us never forget them at the Holy Water font. The Holy souls nearest to heaven may need the sprinkling of only one drop to release them."
This ought to get someone righteously angry! Lies.
Brother Paul
