What are Fables?

sermonindex Jul 3, 2007

Fable (def)--1. A story made up to teach a lesson; 2. an untrue story; falsehood 3. A legend, Myth.
If we want to know if something is Godly, all we have to do is lay it beside the principles of God Word. If it is a belief or teaching, the light of God’s Word will illuminate the truth or it will expose a lie.
Fabled (def.) -- 1. told about in fables, legends or myths 2. Having no real existence; made up; fictitious. We know where they come from.
Old wives' tale (def.) -- a foolish story; silly belief.
Each time the word fable occurs in the New Testament, the underlying Greek word muthos (3454 moothos), is used, which is where the English word myth comes from. Strong's Concordance says the word means "a tale, i.e. fiction (myth): fable." A myth is also a commonly believed but false idea. Even if the whole world’s population is saying something opposite of what God’s says, it a lie.
In order for a person to write a “parable” or "what if" story that would be based on Biblical truth, they would first and foremost have to love the Lord Jesus Christ. The standard that Christians are to use is the Bible. We know that it is the foundation for what we believe and is to be our standard of truth. There is no other yardstick or source or measurement for what is True.

1 Tim 1:3-7 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine.4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
Some will make statements but they can’t relate it to the truth or give scripture reference or the Word of God in it’s entirety. As you all know, there is a movement and has been for sometime, not to discuss or preach against or for any particular named present issue, the reason, when you relate any subject or issue to the Word of God, you can get the truth or you expose a lie. That is why he gave to us, we will know truth and it will set us free. Why would anyone not want the truth? The only reason I can think of a person would not want to use God’s Word as lamp unto his path and a lamp unto his feet. Ps 119:105
2 Tim 2:23-26 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 2 Tim 2:25-3:1
25 Be humble when you are trying to teach those who are mixed up concerning the truth. For if you talk meekly and courteously to them, they are more likely, with God's help, to turn away from their wrong ideas and believe what is true. 26 Then they will come to their senses and escape from Satan's trap of slavery to sin, which he uses to catch them whenever he likes, and then they can begin doing the will of God.
Will the truth finally win out, you bet.
2 Tim 3:8-9 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
Prov 3:5-65 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;6 in all your ways acknowledge him,and he will make your paths straight.
1 Tim 1:3
3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
Notice Paul starts out with verse 1—"I charge thee"….we’re to do it, that is, Preach the Word, reprove, rebuke, and exhort with the Word which gives us our doctrine.
"...they will not endure sound doctrine..." That means, they are intolerant of the Truth. The word "endure" means to tolerate or put up with and we are told they will not tolerate sound Bible teaching.
They get something false in their head and even when God Word shines the light on the falsehood of the belief they still won’t accept it.
Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind. Paraphrased, they don’t have the ability to distinguish the truth from a lie. Does God have that power, yes. He is only means by which we can know the truth.
2 Thessalonians 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

" ...after their own lusts ... " That means they make themselves the authority, that is, they evaluate truth based on their own morals, values, ambitions and so on. They set their own standard of what is good and evil, including calling fables good, instead of seeing them as God sees them,
through His Word. " ...they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;” They look for people to agree with them and validate and support their error by popularity and cultural or political correctness. Manipulation of the truth in favor of a lie is not something new. Genesis records the first record of that type of event. The devil told Eve “did God really say”

Paul told Timothy"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
Notice Paul starts out with verse 1—"I charge thee"….we’re to do it, that is, Preach the Word, reprove, rebuke, and exhort with the Word which gives us our doctrine.
Romans 1:25 refers to those, "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature=the devil=the father of lies, the reason you can’t see the truth is you belong to you father the devil” more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen”.
John 8:43-4543 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
NKJV
When God's truth is rejected, it is automatically replaced by a lie. That lie becomes that person’s truth and they view God's Word as a lie. In fact, it is very clear that those who do not love the truth in the Word of God, will readily believe the lie, to their own destruction.
Unrighteousness is taking pleasure in something God has said we're not to do?
1 Tim 1:12-17 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, (NKJV)
6 - Jangling Or "discussion."
7 - Desiring to be teachers of the law They were apparently Jews. Because of adding so much of their own ideas and Greek mythology, they didn't truly understand what the law (Scriptures) said.
9 - Law is not ... for a righteous man He would be keeping it anyway. The statement is not a release from obedience to the ten commandments .We may have power to obey .

10 - Whoremongers Or "fornicators" Involving adultery. "Defiling themselves"would include homosexuality.
1 Tim 1:18-2:118 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn .
