Appalachian State Upsets No. 5 Michigan 34-32: College Football

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Julian Rauch kicked a 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining as Appalachian State upset fifth- ranked Michigan 34-32 in yesterday's season opener for both teams.
Appalachian State's Corey Lynch then blocked a field goal attempt in the final seconds to preserve the upset at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
Armanti Edwards threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score for the Mountaineers, who've won the past two national championships in college football's second division and have a nation's-best 15-game winning streak.
``This is just a crowning achievement for them right here,'' Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore said in an interview with the Big Ten Network. ``It won't be more important than those last two national championships, but it certainly ranks in there close.''
Mike Hart rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns for Michigan, which has won more games (860) than any other team in college football history. After Hart's 54-yard scoring run gave the Wolverines a 32-31 lead with 4:36 remaining, Appalachian State drove 69 yards to set up Rauch's go-ahead field goal.
Michigan had one last chance as Chad Henne connected with Mario Manningham on a 46-yard pass to the Appalachian State 20- yard line with six seconds left. Lynch then blocked Jason Gingell's 37-yard field-goal try and returned the ball down the field to run out the clock.
