using scripture quotes to establish own self glorification

I firstly apologize if I offend people if i do not communicate this corectly for it is not my intention to upset true brothers and sisters in christ.

For many years I have seen people respond to certain questions of spirituality with scripture after scripture quotes to advance their own stance on the subject.

I have known people who are theologians that could out quote most christians because of their knowledge of the scriptures and yet they were not christians. To my knowlede the word of God is Jesus not just a piece of ink written in a book that can be burned and destroyed.

I read the word every chance I get but that is so I can spend precious time with my lord and to here the guidence of the holy spirit. If i did not have a bible i would still be able to have the word of God with me speaking to me and changing me.

People that can quote scripture after scripture is not a sign of the holy spirit talking through them it is just a sign that they can read and memorise words. It is the responce to the question that has indications of your spiritual relationship with God.

Most of the the people that i speak to about God have had their spiritual ears cut off because a christian has quoted a scripture out of season and with out trying to open their spiritual eyes.

but on the other hand when a scripture is quoted with the motion of the holy spirit it can be ground breaking to rebuke or encourage the person it is directed at.

I say these things becasue i have read some posts that are just a war of quotes that will lead no where and have no spiritual anwser to the question.

as a student of God I must Judge all content that i place in my heart by firstly the way in which a responce is made and the anwser that is given.

single quotes does not give the whole meaning of that chapter and many cults will use single quotes as their banner of truth.

I had to make this post in responce to a post I read because it Got me angry witnessing the table tennis of doctrine being thrown around.

if a person is placed in isolation because of his beliefs, with out the physical materials that bring evidence of this belief. it is at this moment were either the word comes through his spirit or his brain and the fruits of this experience will show the true fruits of that persons isolation.

scripture is to be discussed amongst Gods people with the whole meaning of the book together so that we may Grow and learn from the experience, but to throw scripture quotes around a little bit here and a little bit there, opens the gates for all sorts of spiritual attacks and interpretation. This was an area that lead me in my earlier christian walk to obey christian teachings that were not of God but quoted from the word of God to get their false message across. It wasn't until a father of the faith taught me to read and listen to preachers from the old days because their fruit has been tested and their lives were biblical transcripts of their spiritual relationship with God only.

when awnsering a scriptural question it can only be responded to from an anwser that is in concordence with the whole bible and the intent that it was written. SO if you can quote a one verse scripture from the bible you should be able to link this through the whole bible and the full intent of that letter that was written in the bible.

Did not the religeous people of old. know the old testiment from front to back but when they tried to use this on the lord Jesus he rebuked them with scripture to denounce their authoritiveness toward the word (how ironic the word was standing in front of them in flesh and blood and yet they tried to correct him) them because their heart was more towards winning in self glorification and wordly anwsers then the heart of God? They ruled at that time because of their knowledge of scripture not their knowledge of God in their heart.

I have been wounded many times by these type of preachers when i was younger. they will hear you words and then quote scripture at you with out ungtion of the Holy Ghost and it will devilishly destroy you and enslave you to the law unjustly. Yet i have also been rebuked harshly from a man of God and as i repented of my sin it freed me grow stronger.

i supose i feel that we have seen our christian movement become more religeous then spiritual. even in the spirit filled churches.

this is one of the only websites that i do get real meat from God and not just luke warm milk and i charish that with all my heart

You are right Brother.

Maybe not always from self-glorification, but sometimes other motives, such as self-defence, fear, anger.

Always based on self...

For example, if a particular belief or doctrine or interpretation of Scripture (even a true one) becomes embedded in a person's mind and personality to such an extent that it becomes an obsession, part of who they are.

Or in the case of a young believer who is unsure of his standing, and clings desperately to the tenets of his faith instead of letting the Lord keep him.

In either example, any questioning of that doctrine is taken as personal attack. The person feels threatened and reacts violently to defend his understanding of the Word of God.

He may then hurl scripture after scripture in self-defence, instead of resting securely in the knowledge of Him who is our Security, and letting Him defend His own Word.

Contrast Jesus when confronted with Satan's wilderness temptations.

Each temptation was countered by a specific, brief quote, (not always the quote you or I would have used in similar circumstances!) that sped straight to the mark and silenced the Enemy.

***********************************************

Another example, this time of a cultic use of Scripture - to dominate, manipulate, abuse and control others:

A friend and I came acoss an Internet email list that seemed Christian on first reading one or two of the leader's articles. We decided to join.

However, we quickly realised that there was something far wrong. No-one was allowed to discuss anything - as we do here. They were only to post verses from the Bible, or praise and thanks to the leaders and to God for blessing them through what was posted, or helping them to see their sin through the verses.

Any attempt to discuss, even sometimes if we posted in a non-threatening way that didn't disagree with the leaders was answered with a furious torrent of condemnationary Bible verses. Or it was blocked altogether - or both.

We didn't stay long on such a horrible list, but our hearts bled for those who were being so abused and deceived. Many of these poor souls used to say, in effect, "Hit me again, I deserve it for daring to question the Word of God!"

When the words of the Bible are misused like that it ceases to be the Word of God in any meaningful way.

We also (myself included) need to guard against the temptation to hurl Scriptures at each other in this kind of way.

How else could one say it better? I find myself many times posting in a reply because my emotions have been stirred and I think it requires an immediate reply and I grab a few quick scriptures to include to spruce it up a little. I think many times we may introduce a post just because we have something on our mind and it may not necessarily be something that the Holy Spirit may be speaking to us to post. If all our words are to be controlled by Christ then it takes an effort also to let Him control our posting. I also appreciate your thoughts that wherever we are and whoever we may be speaking to that throwing our a certain scripture or scriptures just because you know them does not necessarily mean you are being guided by the Holy Spirit. Very good thoughts.

thankyou sister for your response that was exactly what i was trying to get across and the dangers of doing this practice. I myself was very young spiritually in the lord and was brought under spiritual bondage because the word was quoted in flesh not spirit which can place you under the law as romans points out.

as you recieve an email so have i. i recieve an email from a so called christian from india saying that they are praying and being persecuted by the people. I asked the main one question from the bible and asked him to anwser it from God. If he anwsered it correctly i would join him in their faith fulled struggle, if he anwsered it incorrectly then he had no spiritual understanding of the bible and his intention was man orientated.

the man anwsered wordly then pested me for the anwser which i didn't give him because these were the pearls from God to me and God had not chosen to give them to him. he ended up being a money making scam.

thankyou so much for your responce it gave me comfirmation in many area's of my post as well as in the spirit.

and yes i also must gaurd my gates from the deceiving words of satam no matter how much scripture he quotes and test them to see if they are of God or the devil

It is interesting recently to see what people see as a successful church, one in which glorifies Jesus as you cannot be part of a church that has not got Jesus as the head and that the Jesus of the bible.

I have had so many false things recently that a desire for the truth and for jesus is like a man looking for water in a desert or on mars.

I find it hard when people do not use scripture, in a testimony it is understandable but when you are talking to say a thousand people.
God spoke creation into being with every word that he spoke and one word from the bible is powerful.
Yet in this modern age we soft saps as a church have decided to use bible versions that are so far away from what it actually says sometimes it is unbelievable.

i understand what you are saying and agree, i am trying to say that it is the spirit in which the scripture quote is brought to the people that is important. if qouting the word of God with the spirit of God behind it will bring the lords light to many hearts that are lost in darkness.

thats why i like these old preachers on this site they will quote scripture but you can feel in your spirit the spirit of truth and it cuts right through to the inner man, dividing the darkness from the light in our hearts.

sorry got to go to work have a blessed day all

I also find that these days I tend to say (sometimes paraphrase, but as accurately as possible to give the true sense) what the Bible says, more than quoting verbatim.

That way it flows naturally as part of the "conversation", rather than a kind of appendix to what is being said.

Unless this is an excuse, and the truth is I'm being too lazy to look it up and copy and paste? ;-)
