Paul Washer?

Has anyone ever heard Paul Washer's view on speaking in tongues?

I didn't mean to put this in the ministry articles and events forum.

I have heard of Paul Washer, he's awesome man of God. If you find a article concerning this, i would be very interested in reading.

I once read an article by Paul Washer (I wish I could remember the name) where he mentioned that he believes the gifts of the Spirit are operating today.

He have never really heard him just spell it out where his interpretations were on tongues, in the way Pentecostals interpret or not. My guess is not. I have heard him say that he does fellowshipped with, pray with, and considers Pentecostal's who are Christian brothers and sisters in Christ, although he was some differences in theological postitions.

I think you have heard Paul's main concern. He is a Southern Baptist and he fears that many
church rolls of all denominations, are full of lost people, who are actually not christians at all. They are on the roll, been water baptized, but no conversion, no regeneration, no fruits, no new creation, no new name. He seems to communicate that the Southern Baptist to the
worst of them all with the most lost in the church service posing as christians. If this is true were does that leave those who do not particate with the body?

I am a Southern Baptist and I agree with that statement. I heard a sermon preached not long ago by an older SBC evangelist on God's people are quenching the spirit in church services. You know there are many ways we can quench the spirit. If anyone in the service is led by God through HIS SPIRIT to obey from the heart and don't obey, or if they do anything that pretending conveying it is from God and it's not, it is quenching the Spirit. He preached a christian gives out of a cheerful heart his tithe and offering to the God's church. This evangelist stated many church services get quenched when the offering plates are past when people do not obey, not giving out of legalism, but giving back to God what HE has given to us from a thankful heart for HIS forgiveness, provision, in Christ from HIS grace and HIS mercy.

I do tithe and often above tithe, 10 % before taxes, the first fruits and since I have HE has provided for needs met have been financially blessed more with keeping the 90% or less than the 95% to 98%. Not a properity gospel but truth. I know by saying this some one will give the Pharisee sermon of Luke 18:11 or equivilant in the other gospels when they don't understand the whole council of God. I don't care and even though one does give it is still by grace and mercy. We are to be witnesses of HIS love and HIS grace and mercy and that is my purpose.

I had never heard tithing preached before in that manner, but I agree. He rebuked the TV preachers who preached the properity gospel with their annointed ink pens and prayer cloths in asking for donations to pay the bills to stay on the air.
How do you feel about this manner of quenching the Spirit?

And if I might put a little humor in my post. We all who are indwelled with the Spirit of Christ will be with HIM in heaven. I have some heard some non Pentecostal Pastors say that the Pentecostals may shot on past heaven a little ways, in a joking manner, and have turn around and come back to be with us, but we will all be together. I have heard many Pastors quote that. These same Pastors are now inviting Pentecostal preachers to there denominational conferences as speakers. I think it is neat. How about you?[/color]

Hi Moe_Mac,

As far as I know, the SBC doesn't exist here in Australia, but from what I've seen and heard online, there seems to be several inconsistencies among it's members with regards to doctrine and practice i.e., on one extreme you have the likes of Rick Warren running his seeker-friendly megachurch in Southern Califonia, yet on the other end you have people like Albert Mohler at Southern Theological Seminary whose theology is Reformed, Complementarian, Cessationist and based around a more confessional statement of faith.

So what exactly makes a Southern Baptist... Southern Baptist?

I

Paul Washer is a member of the Southern Baptist Denomination and is a former missionary. To be a missionary in the Southern Baptist denomination you have to claim that you haven't used 'a private prayer language' in the past year. This is a backdoor restriction on the use of tongues in the mission field.

The official denominational stance on tongues is what I would call an offensive defense.

The Southern Baptists have seen the worst things out of the Pentecostal church and the Charismatic movement, and while the 'power' is attractive, the corruption isn't. So the SBC has put a much larger emphasis on the FRUITS of the Spirit and not the Gifts of the Spirit.

As a Southern Baptist member myself I actually find that I agree with my denominational leaders, as I've seen the abuses in our neighboring Charismatic and Pentecostal churches.

I've been told by more than one person that I'm not a Christian if I don't speak in tongues... I don't... I've never sought out the gift, I've sought out Sanctification and the overcoming Power of the Holy Spirit, but never Tongues in themselves. If God allows me to speak in tongues I won't fight it, but I'll put Loving others and being a Prophetic voice in my generation before speaking in tongues any day.

I say as Zac Poonen, if satan makes something false there must be a real valuable also. Satan would not counterfeit the gift of tounges if there wasent a genuine one. Same with all the rest of the fake gifts, There are fake healing fake prophesies...but there is also the real thing, the bible says so...

I know that Paul Washer was influenced by Leonard Ravenhill--not a pentecostal but a charismatic--and he also claims as close friends brothers in the Lord who are pentecostal. He tells of a brother in another country who he claims is an apostle. So I would not be surprised at all if he believes the gifts are for today. I know of many Southern Baptist ministers who disagree with the official position of their denomination on the gifts. Not that it matters though:-)

When I first became a believer, I spoke in tongues. i haven't forgot the language. I still if I want to start speaking. I received it by having a charismatic ask if anyone want to receive the gift of tongues, I though, sure, why not, I was a new believer and thought it was normal. He laid hands on me and I went out on the floor. That was several years ago, I know longer hold this believe and I have been one now to combat this type of doctrine. Do I think there is the gifts of tongues, yes I do believe, but I don't believe that it is what it is today! I am probably more cynical about this, only because I came out of this whole movement damaged and I damaged others.

I have to go, got to eat, i will be back to finish.

I go to a pentecostal church, and I have never seen that happen (except on T.V.). But I here it used to happen at Whitfield and Wesley revivals.

Numerous scriptures taken out of context. Not really sure though, I was new and young.

Your right I have heard that too, but I believe it was due to the Word being preached. Wesley and Whitfield would preach the Holiness and Righteousness of God and the enormity of our sins. I have heard that the preaching was anointed so much that people would fall and cry under the conviction and revelation of a Holy God. Boy could we use some of that today! Could I use some of that in my walk.

To get back to the question at hand, it would be interesting to know what Paul Washer believes? I would bet its not what you see on T.V.?

I admire and look up to him as a mentor in my life, though I haven't met him, I have listened too, many of his sermons that blessed me and encouraged me in my walk. He is one of the few that I would trust scripturally and cause me to look at my own beliefs over certain scriptures.

Would it cause anyone to change there own opinion based on someones else's, being older and wiser in there faith?

Same with Jonathan Edwards who was preaching at the same time (though accounts say compared to Whitefield, Edwards' preaching was more stoical; apparently "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" was preached in monotone yet it left his listeners in convulsions.)

What is a Southern Baptist now or what it was in the past. What it now is , it is filled with people who just like Paul Washer says, they prayed a prayer one time with their mouth. They can not look back from the point and time they prayed that prayer and see any change in their life because it had no heart involved. No new creation, no wanting to be pleasing to the Lord in any way. No desire to study and defend HIS WORD. They are offended when they hear the word preached in truth and it is because it conflicts with their worldly group affilitions and the desires of their heart on self. In most SBC churches, if Paul Washer came and preached a sermon in the church body on Sunday morning. I would not be surprised if the deacons, fired the pastor for inviting Paul to come preach, and three fourths of the congregation would get up and walk out before he finshed the sermon.

The modern day SB believe that abortion is ok, a homosexual has right to be legally wed in Holy Matrimony, casinos, just like the world, you can't tell the difference, accept one attends church occassionally and one don't. And they send a message ever so cunningly to the preacher before or soon after they hire him, ever so cunningly if you step on our toes in a certain way you are history. They forbid the Pastor to preach against these groups who support this legislation about their rights. This is why Rich Warren has a big church is because he supports many of these people who pass this legislation and does not speak out against them. Narrow is the way. Their theory is the preacher has no business medling in anything about their personal life or conduct. They are saved by grace and have a license to sin. And they always read verse 8 and 9 and leave out verse 10 about unto good works. Most SBC consider it to be a social club, and God has no power. The church body that I just united with has a preacher that is only concerned with pleasing the Lord, if the whole congregation walks out when he preaches truth, so be it, he has obeyed God. That is way all Pastors and preachers should be in all denominations and in everything they do and preach and it is what is needed for revival. But many people say this type preaching is not love, if the preacher preaches such. That is why Paul Washer has a name for never being invited back to many churches. The people say Paul and those like him does not have the love of Christ, if they offend with the word and disagree with a lie. Bologna, you can't love anyone any more than giving them truth that point them to Jesus and HE will save and keep them out of hell because in HIS Father's house are many mansions. That's my understanding. I believe myself all HIS people are saved by grace through faith, it is a gift of God, lest any man should boast, and he saved me unto good works that he prepared for me and all of us in advance to do and we should walk in them.
As Paul Washer says, test ourselves and see if we really are of the faith. Most SB don't have any understanding to even test themselves and when any truth is preached they don't hear. They don't know the Word and don't want to know.
How do I know this. Because I was just like them from 27 years old to 50 before I made him Lord with my heart and not just with my mouth and I haven't been the same since. I have few friends because I offend many.
moe_mac

edit: And if I might add one more thing. If Paul Washer, myself or anyone else speak out against evil, fight against evil, to the modern day SB and many others denominations as well, anyone who does speak out evil will be accused of judging, according to their interpretation of the scriptures.

Thats great!!! I tell you when you hear the truth preach, it is hard not to listen. Thats why I love men like Paul Washer, I have been listening to many of his sermons, and finding myself examining. I don't know if I am trying to covet a moment that would occur in my life, like a deep profound revelation of Christ. you know like some of the people he counseled, after they sought and sought the Lord, he enlightened them with some peace or enlighten a verse to cause a change. The thing that is hard in this, is our own heart! We can talk ourselves out of anything and convince us of anything. All I know is that I passed from death to live, don't know when or how, but I know I want to know HIM deeper and obey Him in my life. I love to read His word and anticipate to hear HIM speak. However, I need to always examine myself, because it could be ways to make God a end to my means! Could I be a Pharisee? (Thats a rhetorical question)

I appreciate what you said iansmith;

I was born into a lutheran church, raised in a charismatic/pentecostal fellowship (they ran the gamut in that one), went to baptist, then to evangelical and back to charismatic (AoG) and now in a nondenominational church...why do I write this? but that all of us has the same kind of story. But love fulfills all the law and Christ is that love manifested. It matters not what denomination, but rather do you love Him and others. Simple words they even seem cliche, but they ARE the most powerful words of all. HE STILL USES THE FOOLISH THINGS TO SHAME THE WISE and if we will see HIM, we must be like little children, SIMPLE AND IN LOVE WITH HIM.

If you see something wrong with another denomination, don't gossip or slander, pray!
