The Prayers of Psalm 119

5 \tOh, that my ways were directed
\tTo keep Your statutes!
6 \tThen I would not be ashamed,
\tWhen I look into all Your commandments.

8 \tI will keep Your statutes;

10 \tWith my whole heart I have sought You;
\tOh, let me not wander from Your commandments!

I am leading a small group and have asked them to isolate the prayers of Psalm 119.

I love Psalm 119! It is so full!

This psalm is mainly centered on the importance of the law and thus a fervent cry for it by the petitioner.For it is with the observance of the Law that a man shall be able to accomplish his assignment.No wonder the Lord said to Joshua, JOSH 1:7
"Only be thou strong and very courageous,THAT THOU MAYEST OBSERVE TO DO ACCORDING TO ALL THE LAW,which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest."
The man Joshua was given an assignment to lead the children of israel to the promise land and then divide the land to them as an inheritance.Having been given this assignment,he was immediately advised by God to observe all the Law that he might accomplish this task.

Oh God our Father, turn our eyes away from worthless things and set our gaze on your Law that we may remember to observe them and find good success spiritually

Here we see that the Lord speaks to Joshua...

7 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee. 8 And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.

Again we see that the Lord speaks to Joshua...

Josh. 4:1 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, 2 Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man, 3 And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night.

Again, we see that the Lord speaks to Joshua...

Josh 4:15 And the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, 16 Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.

Again, we see that the Lord speaks to Joshua...

Joshua 5: 2 At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

Again, we see that the Lord speaks to Joshua...

Joshua 5: 9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

Again, we see that the Lord speaks to Joshua...

Joshua 6: 2 And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour. 3 And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. 4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. 5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

Again, we see that the Lord speaks to Joshua...

This same precept that is demonstrated here in Scripture is also present in the life of the writer of Psalm 119...

When I contemplate these prayers, it brings to mind a desire to know the things of the kingdom of God. In an earthly example, a king rules over his kingdom by communicating to his people the rules and statutes by which the people are to live by. The earthly king commands and teaches the people how one is to live under his rule.

Now we know that the Psalmist has the law of Moses writen on scrolls. We know that God gave 613 different rules...yet this man is praying for something that goes beyond the law of Moses...

Now if one considers the Psalmist prayers, what is he praying for?

Do you think that God would answer a prayer like this, and by what means would God "enable" this man to walk in the "ways" that are pleasing to Him?

Psalm 119

The relationship that this man has with the Lord brings a heart cry to the Lord that He would direct this man's ways so that this man would not experience shame. The cry of this man's heart is a testimony of the right relationship he has with his Savior. Whenever he sins against His Lord, he experiences shame. This is the source from which biblical humility is spawned.

On the other hand, a proud heart has not submitted to testimony of the Lord through the Holy Spirit, on how we grieve the Holy Spirit. A proud heart continues to harden, the ears become dull. After a while there is no sense of shame in those who reject the Holy Spirit. There is no ongoing renewal of the mind.

Psalm 119

9 \tHow can a young man cleanse his way?
\tBy taking heed according to Your word.
10 \tWith my whole heart I have sought You;
\tOh, let me not wander from Your commandments!

This man has found a source of wisdom that is found in God's word. This experience has filled his heart with a desire to cry out for more.

"Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!"

Is he only refering to the 613 items of the law given to Moses? We know from Paul's teaching, that the force of the law is to condemn all men. Yet we hear not condemnation but hope.

How would God answer this man's prayer?

This section of Scripture reminds of this in the NT...

1 John 1: 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 2: 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Psalm 119 is a picture of a man who has learned to walk in the light as He is in the light. If you listen carefully to this Psalmist prayers you will find that God has perfected the love of God, the love for God in this man. It is the grace of God that enable man to love God.

This man prays, "17 \tDeal bountifully with Your servant,
\tThat I may live and keep Your word."

He is not asking for the things that are seen but the things that are unseen.

Psalm 119 means nothing unless:

Jhn 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Jhn 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

1Pe 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

All the Kingdom of God means nothing unless Christ is born again in you and the Life of Christ and the Holy Spirit lead us into the things of the Kingdom of God, none can understand the Kingdom of God unless they are seated in Christ in Heavenly Places, then the Holy Spirit can renew our minds to the Mind of Christ which we possess and don't even know it.

We have all the Nature of God in Christ Jesus by the Seed of the Father in us. Which is Christ in you the Hope of Glory.

The Seed of God in you, how much more can you get of God's Nature? We have it all, we must learn to put it to the Use God intended it for.

Jhn 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Rom 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

Phl 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

1Jo 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

1Jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

A man who acknowledges his weakness is made strong through God's word...because he has learned to walk in the light.

1John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Have we learned to walk in the light of Scripture?

A man who understands the revelation of Christ in him is in the Light, and walks in that Light. A man who does not understand walks in the Law, which kills. The Light gives life, and that life is Christ.

Psalm 119 is that walk and shows him Christ and how He lived His life while He was hear, then He was resurrected and ascended and come back in the life of the believer, born again by the Christ Seed in him. The Pearl of Great Price in clay pots. Psalm 119 will never mean anything unless it is by the Knowledge of the Christ in him, it will only be words of doer religion, not the changed life walking in the Light of his Father and revealer of the Christ in him, the Holy Spirit.

Who walks in you? Galatians 2:14-21 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
