Dear brother Christian!
It was a good sermon to hear (and watch).
I agree that it is essential to lose any weights that might slow you down, especially sins which chain you down.
I also agree that we should not go for peace with sin which might haunt you for a long time. Thank God if we battle against sin, we may ask forgiveness if we fail!
Some little thoughts of my own: "There are several ways we might battle sin, do we battle sin because it gives us discomfort? Or do we battle sin because it grieves the Lord? We must not forget what sin is, its missing the target and ours is God! Do we want to get rid of sin because it brings us discomfort? Bad habits might be sin as its not how God wants us to live, but getting rid of the bad habit might still be sin if that getting rid is not driven by the motivation to draw close to God. I remember Leonard Ravenhill say this: 'We sin in our sinfulness' Perhaps he meant the above."
Zac Poonen mentioned true joy only coming from the enduring of the cross. I think he's right, no matter what things I buy or what I look forward to... I know its not going to fill me or make me permanently happy.
Some questions:
Zac Poonen mentioned prayer not being answered. This would be because you don't listen to God, He won't listen to you. I don't know about this to be honest. I also remember Zac saying: so you just find the most righteous person to pray for you and it will happen (something like this) and Zac is saying no, it won't work.
I remember praying for someone who was an unbeliever to show her that God was real. She said she would believe if God showed her and by Gods grace God did something for that person! Sadly she hasn't endured, and is not seeking God.
Also Zac mentioned that that Jesus was not able to heal everyone, he refers to Matthew 13:58. Do you guys think that Jesus prayed for someone and it turned out that nothing happened? I've always imagined it as that Jesus did not even bother to do miracles, instead of trying and failing?
Zac also said something about David not being Gods original plan and the argument is that David was not even born when Saul became king. Gives food for thought, but I find it hard to accept that Gods plans might fail. Or perhaps I misinterpreted it?
Zac also mentioned that God has no favorites. I know that God is no respecter of persons.
I wonder, Jesus did at times took some of the 12 disciples with Him. Is that not God favoring some men to draw closer then others?
Perhaps I misunderstood Zac, perhaps this is a good question. :-)
What does respecting elders/parents mean? Zac talks about respecting a policeman but not putting confidence in that policeman. How can one show respect too an elder if you are not going to follow his advice or be corrected to his ways after a rebuke from him?
As for what the sermon did for me...
I know quite much, but I don't nearly put into practice a lot of what I know. This might be due to halfheartedness, I've seen that when I want (a) I often do (b). I agree that one must be wholehearted, only I can't do that on my own strength. I need God, but my halfheartedness stands in the way often.
It's a good sermon to think about.
Please correct me if I misinterpreted things or said weird things. I'll be looking forward to discuss this sermon with others, especially 'being wholehearted', or in my case.. becoming wholehearted.
