Church History

With all of the learned people on this forum this may seem like a silly question, but I want to ask it anyway. I have been doing some studying on the church fathers and have come across a lot of interesting subjects.

I was raised up hearing that "once saved, always saved" was a something the majority of the church did not believe and was basically a baptist doctrine. I had never before heard anybody being called an Armenian or a Calvinist, (If I did it meant nothing to me).

Now as I read about Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Wesley and so forth, these words seem to come up more and more. Eternal Security - Perseverance of the Saints - Doctrine of Election - Tulip (not the flower) - Calvin's five points - Arminianism.

Eternal Security - Is this something that only Calvin believed?

Where does the church stand on these things?

Is the jury still out on this?

Most of these issues have been thoroughly discussed as there is great diversity of understanding in these forums. Much of the issues deal with definitions of terms. A good start would be a return to biblical definitions of the terms involved.

But, really the thrust of our conversations are hoped to involve a return to God by all persuasions and a Christian charity among us that will allow us to lay aside differences in non essential beliefs for a common seeking of the face of God for this lost and dying world. ;-)

Dy, I suggest you do a search on these forums and you will learn more then you bargained for! This subject is controversial and evokes a lot of reactions from both camps.

So is the jury out on this? The answer to this is 'yes'. People being people will likely never agree on this issue. Personally, I weary of these kind of discussions, but some appear to thrive on it...
