Preaching - Biblical or Not?

I have been thinking over the past few moments about preaching and it's focus and aim. Does it effectivly convey God's message?

There are many avenues someone can share the Gospel; movie, drama skit, music, art, etc.

My question isn't really the title (this was to get you to read this. lol)

My question is: What does Sunday/Wednesday preaching do to you? What's your immediate reaction? A week from then? A month? A year? What type of messages 'change your life'? What are the benefits of public speaking/preaching? What are the disadvantages? What are things we can improve? How 'involved' should the congregation be? Does power point help? Does objective demonstrations help?

So, [b]ignore the title[/b] "Preaching - Biblical or not" and [u]I ask you to answer[/u], some, if possible all, [u]the questions in the paragraph above.[/u]

It spurs me on through out the week as I meditate on what was spoken. It's a challenge to live for Christ.

I believe it's better to preach than it is to use movies, music, art, etc. because those can stur up much emotion. So can preaching, but I think all those other things can be much more dangerous.

Challenges and encourages me to continue serving the Lord.

What's your immediate reaction?

I can't say that I always have an immediate reaction. Sometimes what I hear is not put into effect until a test comes, and then what I learned from God's word can be practically apllied.

A week from then? A month? A year?

My above answer goes along with this.

What type of messages 'change your life'?

Those that meet me in a spitiual crisis and present me with an opportunity to do something about it NOW, not later.

What are the benefits of public speaking/preaching?

"Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."

What are the disadvantages?

I think a disadvantage can be the personality and motive of the preacher. If preaching is just his/her platform to be somebody, then there is no real advantage gained.

What are things we can improve?

I think there's a lack of Biblically pointed practical preaching. Some preach nothing but motivational messages that tickle ears, while some preach nothing but truths we all know and have known for years. Not trying to downplay the importance of timeless truth that endures forever, but I think there's a lack of a true "word" from heaven sometimes. I can preach Bible truth line upon line, but unless there's something in that message that reaches down and gets somebody where they are (something in it from God, like fresh manna), no one will be changed.

How 'involved' should the congregation be?

My pastor always involves the congregation in one way or another, wether it be through inviting us to repeat any points, Bible verses, or other things. I think it is important for the whole congregation to be involoved, because we're all there to learn, and glorify Christ, not just the preacher.

Does power point help?

Can't really say. I've only seen it used once. Didn't particularly do anything for me.

Does objective demonstrations help?

I believe so. Visual communication is always remembered better than spoken. Jesus used objective demonstrations, i.e. coin in the fish's mouth, setting a child in the midst, etc.

Preaching is definitely Biblical, yet sadly in our day it has turned into a monster that knows very little Scriptural basis.

What I mean is that the NT idea of preaching was the "crying out" that there was forgiveness of sins through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In other words the "good news" was to be declared that a sinner could be justified before God through Christ alone.

Nowadays we hear very little of this, but lots of morals, and ethics, and so preaching becomes more like law-giving rather than life-giving because laws are spelled out that cannot be performed in the flesh, and thus lead to frustration, and utter despair apart from the grace of God in Christ, who alone is our life and Enabler to fulfill that which He commands.

In essence Christ is made a second Moses who demands things that cannot be done, rather than the wondrous Lord of life, and Giver of salvation to men.

The Bible does not say, "remission of sins should be acted out, or, dramatically presented, or, sang out, or, drawn out on some type of material, in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem". Everything would improve if only professing christians would do what the Lord says, which here is to Preach...

C52 you put up an interesting point.

But the bible also doesn't say, "Communion with the saints through internet'. Keep that in mind too. ;-)

As GOD views the heart, so there is reward of peace and fellowship for those who preach through skits, songs, etc. We all came to CHRIST through many various avenues of giftings. To those whom missionaries are sent who did not know our language, it was our actions which displayed CHRIST and thus paved the way with desire...to learn about the Blessed Saviour.

Concerning power point though-- No! That I find to be probably one of the most boring and ridiculous ways in which a sermon can be given. I heard an illustration on a blog-- what would Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech sound like with power point?

Preaching is gods way of glorifying him!!! Using our feeble knowledge of vocab and hoping that people listen to us and the holy spirit is there.
