Can anyone recommend any good church history books? Most of the ones I have found in the used bookstore seem to have a Catholic slant to them. :-(

This series was edited by some rather (theologically) liberal editors, but the Ante-Nice and Post-Nicene Fathers (here: http://www.ccel.org/s/schaff/?show=worksBy) provide a free access to many first-hand accounts, including Eusebius's 4th-century history of the Church.

Phillip Schaff, editor of the series, also wrote an 8-volume history of the church, available at the same link.

I've been considering Schaff's church history series, but I've heard he was twice tried for heresy as an ecumenical, and welcomed other faiths as having "lesser truth"... so I wonder, is there someone who has read it and may know more?

Check out David Bercot's Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs. I have found it to be very beneficial in knowing what the early Church (first 400 years) believed.

It's not comprehensive but you'll profit a lot from it:
