What are the biblical characteristics and ministry of apostles?
• Acts 2:4 They were filled with the Spirit.

• Acts 2:14-36 They preached the Word of God.

• Acts 3:1-8 They healed the sick.

• Acts 4:1-12 They were persecuted.

• Acts 5:1-11 They pronounced God’s judgment.

• Acts 5:12 They worked signs and wonders.

• Acts 5:42 They taught and preached Jesus Christ.

• Acts 6:1-6 They ordained deacons.

• Acts 8:14-17 They laid their hands on others to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

• Acts 8 and later chapters. They founded and/or strengthened new churches.

• Acts 9:36-43 They raised the dead.

• Acts 10 They preached to the Gentiles.

• Acts 12:1-11 They were martyred, persecuted, and sometimes delivered.

• Acts 13:4 They were sent by the Holy Spirit (the root of the word “apostle” means “sent”).

• Acts 13:11 They pronounce a curse.

• Acts 14:21-22 They confirmed disciples in their faith.

• Acts 14:23 They ordained elders.

• Acts 15:1-21 They settled doctrinal disputations.

• Acts 16:18 They cast out demons.

1 Corinthians 9:1
Am I am not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

An Apostle must have seen Jesus the Messiah…..

This is true if referencing the position that the original twelve disciples held. However, Paul was not one of the original twelve, and his defense of his apostleship was not in the fact that he had seen the Lord, because many had seen the Lord resurrected and were not apostles because of it.

The one thing that I wanted to point out as a trait of an apostle is this:

When Paul made the defense of his apostleship, he did not make it by stating the power he had seen, the sick he had healed, or any act of that sort, his defense was in his suffering, in his imprisonment, these things were overly abundant in his life, that was the foundation, and the whole argument.

We would be wise to view the rest of the church under a similar light, not that all apostles are in Paul's boat, but it does create a strong view point from which to start determining who an apostle is.

Hello Ben, I am not trying to say more than the scriptures say but the Apostle Paul ask the questions…

1 Corinthians 9: 1

Am I am not an apostle?
am I not free?
have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord?
are not ye my work in the Lord?

These are all question of affirmation that demands yes…

One statement affirms to be an Apostle; you have seen Jesus/Yeshua.

I am not saying there are not Apostles, I am saying if anyone is an Apostle they have had a special privilege not afforded everyone in the Body of Christ.

The 12 Apostles all had seen Jesus/Yeshua and the one that replaced Judas had seen Jesus/Yeshua.

Can you site me one example from the scriptures of an Apostle that has not seen Yeshua

Do you mean a man that has seen Jesus Christ in the flesh?

Or are visions included?

The reason I am wondering is because many people throughout the scriptures saw visions of Christ, but that did not make them apostles.

I think what you have done here is attempt to tie the statements of Paul to the council of the Apostles when they were filling the "position"of Judas. I don't think the two of those can be connected, because Paul was not one of the original twelve, and held no position of that sort.

Paul was making a defense of his apostleship because without that "position" people were questioning whether or not he was really an apostle, and if he had the authority of an apostle.

Although, he probably did see christ in the flesh, and probably witnessed much of Jesus ministry.

I think you may have a bit of a valid point here, but I do not think that it is enough material to say that that is a requirement set that determines whether a man is an apostle.
