2008 New Year Slogan

sermonindex Dec 31, 2007

Saints,

I was in a great spirit filled meeting in Fredericton, NB. And a few of the brothers were being very zealous for the Lord and giving admnotions to serve God with all our strength.

"Get Er done for Jesus 2008"

I found it funny but also edifying. Are we going to go all out and get it done ie go through to God for Jesus Christ and eternal realities this year?

Hey, that's good!

I've kind of chosen the motto of the Rebelution, "Do Hard Things", for mine. It means that we should do hard things for the Lord.

Have a happy New Year in the Lord!

Can you plod? Let’s do it in 2008.

I've just received a New Year's Newsletter with the title above from a missionary working in Burundi in very difficult circumstances who gave this challenge for 2008.

He wrote of William Carey, the ‘Father of Modern Missions’ who was born in a desperately poor family and so had a terrible education. He was apprenticed as a shoemaker, but did not make the grade; he tried to run a school, but it functioned badly. His marriage was a deeply unhappy one, and his daughter died early in infancy. He was a deeply committed believer, but his attempts at pastoring a small church hindered his chances of ordination because by common consent his sermons were too tedious and boring!

In spite of this, Carey formed a missionary society with himself as the first candidate and set sail for India. This feeble individual translated the Bible into Bengali, Oriya, Marathi, Hindi, Assamese and Sanscrit, as well as portions into 29 other languages! Once he lost 10 years’ translation work in a fire – he just started again. This is not to mention other contributions in literature, education, agriculture, getting infanticide outlawed ...

Before he died, knowing people would want to write about him, he wrote the following:

“If one should think it worth his while to write my life, I will give you a criterion by which you may judge of its correctness. If he gives me credit for being a plodder, he will describe me justly. Anything beyond this will be too much. I can plod. I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this I owe everything.”

I want to be a faithful plodder this year.

HOLY FATHER;
Give us a new year. Not just a new number, but
a new year. Give us a new year filled with new
adventures, new attitudes, and new visions.
O, Father, give us a new year. Give us a new
song, a song of hope. Give us new joy in
following Jesus. Give us new opportunities to
glorify Your Name and serve Your cause.
Father, give us new love; love for You and love
for one another. Give us new love that reaches
to the helpless, the needy, the poor. Father,
give us new purpose in our message, our ministry
and our service !! ;-)

Let the message and the Spirit that gave it burn in you with enough heat to consume all things in your life.

"Instead of making a New Year's resolution
Consider committing to a biblical solution
Your promises are easily broken
Empty words, though earnestly spoken
But God's Word transforms the soul
By His Holy Spirit making you whole
As you spend time alone with Him
He will change you from within!"

Have a blessed 2008!

If you brush your teeth twice a day, you don't get toothache. If you read your Bible and pray twice a day, you don't get lifeache.

The spiritual day starts the night before.

Drag factor of a tortoise = 0.003 (Can't remember the units but pretty much means there's always hope!)

My all time favourite is:

I resolve to make one of Jonathan Edwards' 70 resolutions as my own. This year:

69. Resolved, always to do that, which I shall wish I had done when I see others do it.
