Practical help in Reading the Bible through multiple times throughout the year

I first came across this article almost 3 years ago, and it has helped me a lot in my bible reading. However, I would caution the practice of reading much through and yet having little or no prayerful meditation upon the word on a daily basis. In the past I have made the mistake of reading much and meditating little. I've also, made the mistake of studying much and praying little. Spurgeon said, " Some people like to read so many chapters every day. I would not dissuade them from the practice, but I would rather lay my soul asoak in half a dozen verses all day than I would, as it were, rinse my hand in several chapters." Spurgeon also said, "But we must search the word, for unread Bibles are evidences against rebels, and are unbecoming in believers."

May we read through our bibles much throughout the year for the glory of God. However, let us never neglect much time in prayerful meditation upon the word of God. It has been said that " Many of the Puritans read 10-15 chapters a day (they had the time--or rather, they made the time.)"

Spurgeon also said, "True Bible-readers and Bible-searchers never find it wearisome. They like it least who know it least, and they love it most who read it most. They find it newest who have known it longest, and they find the pasture to be the richest whose souls have been the longest fed upon it. When one of our missionaries had to read a certain Book of the Old Testament through a hundred times while he was translating it, he said that he certainly enjoyed the hundredth time of reading it more than he did the first, for he understood it better, and it seemed to him to be fuller and fresher the more familiar he became with it."

Praise God! That is good to hear that you have already been blessed by it. I have a couple of other brothers and sister who have begun practicing some of the principles in the article and they to have been enriched with an increase of God's word.

I find that when I read more... My spirit is compelled to pray and intercede in the power of the spirit.

We were so blessed to have Bill McLeod with us at the CRF Members Retreat, Oct. 19-21, 2007. Bill
encouraged us in many ways, but the biggest challenge for us was to read the Bible as much as we
could. We asked him how much of the Bible he reads a day. His response—he reads 14 chapters a day.
He shared with us that we should read one book of the Bible each day. This was the best way to really
understand the book; it will also strengthen our prayer life. "

These are just a few quotes from the article:

Moody testifies, "One week I read Ephesians 93 TIMES THROUGH (13 times daily for a week) and on Sunday preached without notes under the strongest anointing I ever felt in a single service in my life."

George Muller [a man known for his miraculous prayer life] read the bible through every 90 days (3 months) or 4 times a year for 25 years, and said, "I am a happy, happy, happy man." In his writings he tells of some problems that came up in early morning prayer hours. He decided TO READ THE BIBLE FIRST each day - his regular prayer time followed and the problems vanished!

Ravenhill, in his book "Meat For Men" tells of Dr. Sung who was placed in the state hospital in White Plaines, New York. He requested a Bible AND READ IT THROUGH 40 TIMES IN 6 MONTHS, and received a working knowledge of all 1189 chapters in the Bible - EVERY 4-1/2 DAYS FOR HALF A YEAR. He was dismissed, completely recovered, from the hospital!

Dr. Gray longed for many years to be filled with the Word of God, but failed to see the way. One day at a conference he met a layman overflowing in the power of the Word and asked him, "How did this happen to you?" The layman answered "BY READING BOOKS OF THE BIBLE OVER AND OVER." The great preacher was humbled by learning a lesson from a layman he had never discovered in his own ministry. Note the power in reading a whole book of the Bible!

Edit: Intro addition and clarification

I know this is about reading the bible... but one recent addition I've made to my life is also and Audio bible, I'm in the car for at least 45 minutes to an hour a day. Because of the Ammount of time I spend in the car it should be no problem to listen to the New Testament through in a little over a month...

My friend Mike speeds his audio bible up a bit, because he is a skilled and fast reader.

However I slow mine down a bit, because I'm not skilled in reading. (It is convenient for me that my mp3 player can speed-up and slow-down audio)

There is something that has helped me a lot. I have a marking system that I have developed. I write symbols, letters, or numbers next to verses that indicate the theme or subjects in the verse. This has helped me find verses quicker when I'm praying, preaching, or exhorting. It has also helped me study topics. For instance, If you want to learn more about a specific subject or doctrine in the bible. Make up a symbol for it, or even a colored symbol for it. I have an LW for verses that are applicable to Loving your Wife as Christ loves His Church. I outlined the LW with a blue and pink color, so that when I'm flipping through my bible I can spot out all the verses that pertain to this subject. This has helped me much when I'm praying through the word or sharing scripture with others. It's much easier to locate verses when you have a unique colored coded symbol marked next to all th scriptures relating to that subject.

If there is any strong principal in bible reading I've learned, it is this:

Pray as you read and read as you pray. Sometimes I'll spend one portion of my time reading and the other portion praying over what I read.

Have a pencil nearby helps. I'll mark verses that I need to go back and pray through. Also, as I'm reading through I'll Pause on certain verses to spend sometime in prayer over what the Lord is showing me.

I heard of a preacher who would read a book in this manner:

Let's say the book of John.
Starting in month 1, read the first 3 chapters of that book everyday for a 30 day period. by the end of the month. you will have read those first three chapters 30 times.

Then the next month, move on to chapters 4-6 and do the same thing.

In about 7 months, you will have read the book of John 30 times.

This is a great way to read a book that you want to know inside and out. By the end of the season of going through the entire book, you will be much more familiar with where verses are located in that book, and the context. This method is helpful if you want to master a specific book. I remember Leonard Ravenhill suggested that preachers should master some books. It's seems to be what Ravenhill did with Hebrews. He qoutes from that book alot and I think it's because he spent an unusual amount of time in it.

You can also change the amount of chapters that you read each day. I recommend 3, so that you still have time to go through the word in your normal reading time. But, you can try whatever you are able.
