Mary the mother of Jesus

sermonindex Jan 14, 2008

Traditionally, mary's mother's name was supposed to be Anne. I don't find it in the Bible. Is there any real evidence that this was her name?

What about her father? She was obviously descended from David, as was Joseph, but through the line of Solomon's brother, Nathan. Even the genealogy in Luke 3 gives Mary's line apparently from Joseph, not Mary (it seems it was the - to us confusing - custom in those days to trace the female line like that, through the husband's)

Also, Elizabeth, from the tribe of Levi, was Mary's relative, (as was her husband Zechariah of course) so there must have been some intermarriage there.

Is this why Jesus had a "right" (even in merely human terms of the Levitical priesthood He actually came to abolish) to be Priest as well as King, because He was descended both from Judah and Levi?

Just wondering. Thanks for any input.

never read anything about Mary's name being Anne.

Only 3 months difference in John the Baptist and Jesus earthly age but in the beginning was the Word.

Jesus was only in the lineage of Mary . As you know Jesus was conceived by the HOLY SPIRIT and his Father and gave HIM HIS authority.

That's my take.
good question.

Hi Moe

Thanks for the response.

There is definitely a traditional belief that Mary's mother was called Anne, but where it comes from I have no idea. Probably just man's imagination, like the names of the Wise Men.

Does anyone have any information on the origin of the tradition?

Or can anyone explain the geneology thing, why it is Mary's line in Luke's Gospel written as if it was Joseph's? I did read something about this, that it was a custom understood by all in those days, to write a wife's genealogy this way, but can't remember where. It would be useful to know, otherwise we are open to the sceptics' accusation that Matthew's and Luke's genealogies are different and therefore unreliable.

thanks

Does anyone have any information on the origin of the tradition?

As with most ancient, non-biblical notions and traditions it appears that this is a Catholic myth (much like every other belief the Catholic Church holds to).

The Catholic Church refers to Mary's mother as "Saint Anne"... yet there is nothing in scripture that even hints that her mother's name is Anne.

As with most Catholic myths, this one can be thrown out the window as well. There is no scriptural evidence of any of this... therefore it is hardly worth the time discussing it. (Not that there is anything wrong with discussing it, just that one must ask... what is there to discuss??)

Hi Jeannette,

About this,

"Is this why Jesus had a "right" (even in merely human terms of the Levitical priesthood He actually came to abolish) to be Priest as well as King, because He was descended both from Judah and Levi?"

Do you mean seperate from what is explained in Hebrews chapter 7?

Have looked it up briefly. One source is:

http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintj20.htm

Part of the article says:

"Joachim is mentioned in neither historial or canonical writings. The information we have on Joachim derives mainly from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James".

As this is a Catholic website, I think that pretty well settles it.

Blessings

This is Catholic mythology and has no basis in either truth or fact.

Hi Jeannette,

Have you ever ploughed your way through this thread about the fathers of Joseph and Mary, or are you just looking for the name of Mary's mother?

I note that Anne is a form of John: God is gracious.

This thread covers the claim on both Joseph and Mary's side, to be descended from David, giving Jesus His right to David's throne.
