I noticed on many church websites they have By-Laws. They sound like you are signed a contract to buy something? I was just curious if anyone knows where that came from and is it biblical? or is it a way to protect the church in our sue happy world?

In the UK bylaws are simply laws, over and above the law of the land, made by any local governing body. For example, not many years ago some local authorities in Wales allowed public houses to open on Sundays, but some didn't - they made [i]bylaws
So I suppose a church has a right to have byelaws. They basically say, "This is how we do things around here", and if you don't like it, tough!"
I suppose the SI Forum rules might be called bylaws. Not all forums have exactly the same rules as to what they will and won't permit.
I have no idea about church website bylaws, but suppose they are something like that.

Typically bylaws are designed to provide a set of beliefs and guidelines for a local church or organization to function. They deal with doctrinal issues as well a church related business procedures. They outline qualifications for leadership, etc.
In a perfect world these things are not necessary. But the challenge comes when folk come in teaching false doctrine or desire to be in ministry and live contrary to the Gospel. Many times bylaws are legalistic rules. Many times they are designed to discourage diversity of opinion and [i]force
Just a few thoughts...
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe in America, in order to have a tax exempt status the government requires a certain type of organization involving how the church government is set up... and by laws are a part of that.
I'm sure if you google it there will be more info.
But this raises an interesting question about church membership, etc.
I'll start another thread tho, dont want to hijack this one.

The Church by laws where I have attended is do what the Pastor says, and the people he has hand picked to agree with him.
I don't have any problem with authority or by laws, as long as they line up with the Word of God.
When the Church Membership isn't allowed to question anything, then there is a problem somewhere.
Everything should be out in the open, and each member should have a right to know where the
money they give to God is going.
