"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God..." 1John 4:1
It seems that often times instead of trying the spirit of what we see and hear; instead we try the words: their meanings, what the speaker (though long ago dead) really meant by this word or that word, perhaps how it measures up to our own experience or understanding....
But trying a spirit- not a "spook", a spirit. Have you ever noticed that when you listen to some people you respond differently for awhile afterwards?
Perhaps you listened to a very convicting message on the tongue, and afterward your heart and mind are very thoughtful about how you speak, for awhile at least.
Perhaps you heard a fiery sermon on the judgement of sin and the fate of the dammed; and for a period of time your concern for those held under the sway of judgement was very intense.
Well, in the same way, when one listens to someone who is... say a gossiper, or a critic, or a depressed type of person, often times it almost seems as though you've been spiritually insulted, or manipulated in some way.
I wonder, do you suppose that someone can be empowered by the Holy Spirit and not have perfect words? (DL Moody comes to mind)
Perhaps someone from India would express something in a way that would be very strange to me; as well, somethings that I may express would be very strange- perhaps even offensive to certain areas of the world. (perhaps the mere fact that I am a woman expressing myself in the open would be offensive)
No, rather the measuring line is to be "whether they are of God." Now John does go further to explain his position regarding the believing/accepting/receiving of someones spirit as those who "confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh"
In this day that seems to be a rather simplistic approach as many "confess" such a thing... Yet, if one confesses, not merely with his words, not merely with his "lifestyle" (as they can be judged very imperfectly by mere humans...); but rather by the spirit of the man.
I have heard men who have preached a very fine message, led a very traditional christian lifestyle, yet..... quietly I could just not absorb not merely his words but rather the "spirit" behind the words.
One the other hand I have heard men preach things that I may not necessarily agree with (such as teachings on headcoverings, or some view on authority, or baptism, or on,......); BUT their hearts, their spirits come from God.
I may not understand all their perspectives, but I have to respect them as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Sure, we have to watch the fruit. Sure we have to be a studier of God's Word. But we must also be careful not to be a judge, but rather a tester of the spirit.
When we meet someone that we've never met before, and they are a Christian, most of the time we can tell; why is that?
I ask the God of all the universe to help me to not put Him or His word into such a box that I close it up to those that belong to His Kingdom and His body. Help me walk circumspectly, wisely; but harmless, humble and careful.
A Sister in Christ
