What do you think of Replacement Theology?

D
docs Feb 19, 2008

That is the theory that the church has forever replaced Israel in God's plan and therefore Israel (though unredeemed at this time) has no eschatological signifigance whatsoever in the things and events pertaining to the end. They are no longer a covenant nation before God the theory goes. I don't buy it myself and I think it has done more than a little harm over the centuries. There's more that could be said about it and what I have offered is just a very short summary of this belief.

I think this much. Be very careful here. Please do a search of the site on this subject. It has been gone through ad nauseum.

That is just a general warning, not to discourage anyone from further discussion. If it cannot be done with charity it will be swiftly brought down.

I don't buy it myself

Don't ever buy it. It is an error adopted by unlearned men and women, who won't turn the pages of the Holy Word of God.

Paul, in his writings in Romans, has much to say about this in the latter chapters.

Art Katz has much to say on this issue as well. If you are looking for teaching on this, I feel is Biblically sound, look to Art's writings on Deception and Israel.

This is the website of what he has written on Israel and the Church.

Would anyone else confirm or witness to, on this forum, the truth of what Art has written here?

I really didn't know that it had been gone through here before as you say. I don't get here that often because of other resonsibilities etc. but thanks for your comments. I wasn't trying to cause a commotion either. It's just that this subject and the other side issues coming from it have been on my mind lately. If people choose to let the comments stay where they are right now that is fine. The people I usually dialog with have little interest in the subject and it gets kind of frustrating when you want to talk about something but the interest people have is only marginal.

Replacement Theology is rank heresy.

If you think Israel has been replaced, then read Revelation.

Heresy, such as your not a Christian? i trust that is not what you meant.

If you are not trusting Christ, you are not in the tree- Jew or Gentile. You can't come to the Father without Christ- Jew or Gentile. Can you be in covenant with God while rejecting his son- Jew or Gentile?

Does anyone on either side of the debate disagree with the above?

What is heresy? A false teaching. Did I say if you believe in heresy you're not a Christian? Nope... didnt say that. Some heresies are "ranker" than most. Replacement theology is very rank.

Kinda like a skunk.

Before everyone gets so "sure" about "replacement" theology being rank heresy as one brother put it, consider the following.

And yes this is written by a Jewish friend of mine-

1.) There are no Jews to work with in Revelation. Jews are no longer ethnic Jews. Romans 2:26-29 - If those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.
A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise is not from men, but from God.

2.) Jerusalem is no longer a physical city. The ethnic nation is no longer literal. The real Jerusalem is now above.
Galatians 4:21-26 - Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise. These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. WHERE IS JERUSALEM? ABOVE.

3.) Where is the temple? The temple today is our bodies – not one made by hands.
1 Cor. 6:19 - Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?

4.) What was the hope of Abraham and Moses and all of the heroes of the Bible? Was it to come back to the land of Israel and the nation? NO! They were looking forward to the heavenly Jerusalem. Hebrews 11 & 12 are a must read for this. (but I won’t display them here for brevity.)
But read Hebrews 11:39-40 - These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

This is great – the fulfillment for all, before and after Christ is fulfilled in Jesus Christ – now. Sometimes I don’t think that dispensationalist take the Book of Hebrews seriously when it says that Jesus sat down – it’s done for all.

So, here is my point, based on what I laid out above, who is a Jew, what and where is the true Jerusalem, what is defined as the temple and the fact that the OT saints were not looking to come back to the land but were looking for the heavenly Jerusalem, why on earth would anyone interpret the Book of Revelation to include everything that is just the opposite of what the NT writers described. If you think that the imagery had the readers scratching their heads, imagine what they were doing if trying to interpret this in today’s dispensational manner.

Here are some other things to consider-

The People of God
1)From the beginning, God selected one people alone, from all the earth.

I think most on this forum would agree that the church has not replaced Israel, mainly because, according the scripture, the church has always been in existence, even under the old covenant. There has always been a people that God has called unto himself (the church, the called out). As Paul stated, not all Israel is of Israel. Not all of the natural children of Abraham are/were the true children of Abraham...only those who have believed the promise and are reconciled to God by faith. Doesn't the new testament teach that?

So no, the church does not replace Israel, but...Christ has come and is now the fulfillment of Israel. He is the substance of all of the shadow. Doesn't Hebrews teach that?

He is the true temple.
He is the true sacrifice.
He is the passover.
He is the sabbath.
He is the true prophet, priest and king.
He is the land, the inheritance, the rest for the people of God.
It is by faith in Him that one is truly circumcised...not of the flesh, but of the heart.

All of these things, and more, defined Israel. It is what separated them from all of the other nations, and all of these things have now been fulfilled, in Christ.

So no, the church has not replaced Israel, but Christ has fulfilled all that Israel is (and remember he is a jew)

God has not forsaken Israel...look at Paul. Their salvation has come. They have recieved their inheritance (the land) and it is Christ...

Do we place Israel above our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

Krispy,

Your posts have been very disappointing lately. It seems all you can do is put lables on what people believe, judge motives, and call people names...(i.e. Calvinist)

If you wanted to refute something, it would be nice if you actually refuted the content of what someone writes instead of attacking them personally. Is what was written true? Is it error?

If you can explain your position then please do so. I, for one, do not want to believe error, so if I or someone else is wrong, then please correct us with truth, not accusation.

Uhmm... excuse me, but roaringlamb is proudly a Calvinist. Has no problem stating such. How then am I am labeling him when he has already labeled himself?

And it is a FACT that most Calvinists adhere to Replacement Theology.

If you're interested in my reasons why I am not a follower of Replacement Theology I went in depth with it some time back... do a search and find it.

And yes, I have been hitting on Calvinism quite a bit lately because it is on the increase now more than I have ever seen it before.

What do you think of Replacement Theology?
Why can't it be a merger instead of a replacement?

I am in favour of this teaching, but not in it's wording. The word "Replacement" is not a good word to use, because Paul says,

Romans 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
On the day of Pentecost the Church started out with Jews ONLY. Then later the half breed Samaritans were added, and then later on the Gentiles.

So for us to say that Israel has been replaced is foolishness, their in it!!!

I like the word "merge" better.

The point is, if you are going to be a part of a thread, then participate by actually posting some substance.

In your post you basically said, all Calvinists hold to replacement theology, Calvinists are wrong, therefore replacement theology is wrong.
(that is poor arguement)

I personally do not like to be called a Calvinist because I do not entirely hold to all five points of Calvinism, and as long as I have been a christian I have and do attend pentecostal churches.

We label everyone today, conservative, liberal, calvinist, etc. And in doing so, we automatically assume they believe thus and thus.

That kind of thinking is small and very Sean Hannity like...

If someone posts something that you do not agree with then refute what they write. If you cannot do that because you have not thought through your position, then please do not participate... for the good of the thread.

In your post you basically said, all Calvinists hold to replacement theology, Calvinists are wrong, therefore replacement theology is wrong.

This is exactly why I wont play your game. You have completely misunderstood what I said. This is not what I said at all... thats what you wanted me to say.

Therefore, I see no point in giving you what you want because I dont have enough time in the day to keep correcting your misunderstandings of my words.

As for me not adding anything of any substance to the forum... ok... uhmmm... kinda disagree with you on that one too. I think the vast majority of folks here would disagree with you on this one as well. Not everyone always agrees with my words, but this is the first time anyone has accused me of not adding any substance to the forum.

But I still love ya! And I never called you a Calvinist... I called roaringlamb a Calvinist... because he calls himself a Calvinist. See, you are only interested in putting words in my mouth. Therefore I will sit back and let you tell me what I think. okey doke? :-)

I have a question.

Biblically and historically, has the nation of Israel been restored to the land before or after repentance? And does the modern day nation-state of Israel follow that pattern?

sermonindex Feb 19, 2008

Replacement Theology is heresy, no question about it.

The Gentiles did not replace Israel, Israel has chosen their king, Caesar. But that didn't mean they were forsaken. While she was married to Rome, Christ annulled his relationship with her by dying on the cross thus making her free and no longer called an adulterous(Romans 7:1-4). On the day of Pentecost, the promise to Abraham and to his seed was fulfilled and thousands of Jews were being saved, fulfilling that "All Israel shall be saved" prophecy, "As such that should be saved" of course.

So the Church started out with Jews NOT Gentiles, and to this very day there are Jews in the body of Christ. Today as it was yesterday, there is neither Jew or Gentiles, bond or free, for we all one in Christ Jesus our LORD.

If anyone here says that God is going to turn back to the Jews, thus making a distinction in the body of Christ, you need to correct your theology and line it up with all scripture and not with one verse.
