Your thoughts, please

I was privy to a conversation about the Nicene/Apostle's Creed earlier this week and whether or not it "counts" as being an appropriate prayer of salvation. If you look at both, it may seem that way. Well, one person was adamant that the creeds are appropriate if the person truly, deeply believes in what he is saying and the other person was just as adamant that they are not appropriate. I stayed out of the conversation as I could see both sides of the discussion. I was just curious what others thought. Thanks a bunch! :-)

The Nicene Creed was written to be a statement
or declaration of faith. It is more doctrinal
than it is a prayer.

I have a nice story about the Apostle's creed:

I grew up Roman Catholic, so of course, I know the Apostle's creed...we said it every week in church. ( It was part of the script :-) ) For me, as a child and teenager it did not mean much to me. Then...after God saved me...

One night, when I was in bible school, I was praying in my dorm room. It was a dry time, and I did not really have anything to pray. The Apostles' creed came to my mind. I started reciting it, and it came alive. I couldn't believe the truth that I used to blab off without any thought. It really is a wonderful creed. It really shows you how bind and deaf and dumb we really are until God gets a hold of us.

As far as using it for a prayer of salvation, I say, why not! It's not the prayer that saves a man, it's faith in Christ. If praying the Apostle's creed will cause a man to truly believe in Christ, then why not....

I grew up Catholic as well, including 12 years of Catholic school. I totally agree with "finding out" what the creed really means once you're saved. Thanks for the input and the insight!

From my own experience, when I prayed for God to save me I would not have had any idea of what most of the "creeds" meant. All I knew was I was wretch and headed for hell in the fast lane... and that Christ died in my place so that I could have eternal life. I knew I needed to humble myself and admit my utter failures to God, and ask Him to forgive me.

Why would we make someone take "Christian Doctrine 101" before they could be saved? That all comes later... much later for some of us.
