can the Church adapt?

sermonindex Mar 17, 2008

Nearly everyday we learn more about the earth, about the universe and the Creation. Sometimes these new things change our perspectives, such as when great telescopes were used to determine that the universe is expanding outward in all directions. this discovery overthrough the idea of Steady State, that many athiests scientists held (because it implied that there was no beginning or end to the universe.) The subsequent discovery of universal background radition (noise) that shouldn't be there lent further evidence for the big bang that created the time/space continuum.

To me, neither of these discoveries contradicts anything in the Bible. but this is not so for quite a few Christians.

what is concerning me is that the Church is keeping the baby (Jesus) in the bath water, and it is getting cold. The people who wrote the Old Testament were great people, Children of God that brought the Faith and understanding of man's place and role on earth to us. But lets face it. They didn't understand the facts of nature at all. For them, the earth was at the center of the universe and everything else (the heavens) revolved around it. They knew nothing about biology, nothing about comets, or even that stars were other suns which had planets.

my great concern is the clinging to the INTERPRETATIONS of Old Testament writers, and then saying that if they are not true, then the rest of the Bible is suspect, and then following on this, that we can't trust what it says about Jesus.

scientific progress and discovery is not going to sit still. but the words of the Old Testament cannot be updated or revised, as we do with just about everything else when new things are discovered. so rest assured that the Church that sits still on conventional interpretation of the Old Testament will continue to be contradicted by scientific discovery. and slowly this will erode peoples' faith in the Church.

In life we move ahead with what we learn, or ignore our misunderstandings and fall behind.

The real jewels in the Bible are the teachings of Christ Jesus and the crown is His attonement for our sins. and this is the point of the Bible. It is not a book about science, astronomy, or biology, it is a book about faith.

Hi Bubba,

I completely agree.

The problem some Christians have is not the definitions of what really had been identified - however imperfectly - and retained for us in scripture - but they have been taught that science and God are opposed to each other.

This is the real flaw in the logic, for God created everything.

What science often does, though, is to force people's eyes off the Creator, and on to the created - the creature - whether it be an invention like the corkscrew, a lens or a calculator (for examples), and to let these dictate our view of God, rather than our view of God being that He is infinitely greater - He whose mighty power framed the whole thing, from stardust to human, and even became a Man Himself.

Hi Bub,

It is not a book about science, astronomy, or biology, it is a book about faith.

The bible is also a book about facts. If the bible isn't factual, then why should it inspire faith?

The church should never adapt to the world but the world to the church.

The tragedy is when as the old saint horatius bonar exclaimed in his day: "I looked for the church and found the world and looked for the world and found the church!"

postmodernism is not a new way of sharing the gospel, people still are the same and need the old gospel of the cross.

The bigger question is what do we mean by "The Cross"? When I preach the cross, most say I am preaching legalism or works, when I preach inter faith and devotionalism (inter holiness) toward God than I have removed the teeth from the gospel and no longer have any works or practical expression that is viewable to the outward eye. The what exactly does "The Cross" mean in practical application?

I agree... it will erode the intellectual faith of unconverted church members. For the true child of God who has been powerfully and radically born again, made a brand new creation in Christ, and filled overflowing with the Holy Spirit, modernism and the latest theories will not cause them to bat an eyelid - let alone be shaken in their faith.

Greg is right, sin and the worlds lust are always going to stay the same. We have the same God of the bible.

I always remember talking to my alevel chemistry science teacher about what happens when they bring the next new theory out!
With science they are just analysing what God created anyway and he allready knows what he created, better than they do.

Romans 1
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; F6 for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so F7 that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Science can actually convict them! They are living in a universe completly by gods grace in bodies.
The food we eat, the water we drink, the grass we sit on and rain we go through is a gift from the Lord! Hell cannot afford those luxuries! Because they have rejected the God of the Universe whilst studying the Creation of the Universe!

It is madness!!

The gospel is eternal, men will always be sinful and they will always need a saviour! I will and every more increasingly needing my saviour more and more as I find out what a mess I really am without him!

Joh 6:68 - Show Context
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Bubbaguy,

Hello. I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. When you say:

"scientific progress and discovery is not going to sit still. but the words of the Old Testament cannot be updated or revised"

are you saying that The OT is out dated and new discoveries will show that the OT writers were ignorant? (Because, as you may believe also, God wrote the OT and He isn't surprised by new discoveries)This is probably not what you mean and I have misunderstood...right? :-)

Are you saying that the intrepretations of various OT sriptures were not accurate and this will be revealed putting some in the church at risk for loss of faith?

I am curious to know which intrepretations and whose they are. :-(

"They knew nothing about biology, nothing about comets, or even that stars were other suns which had planets." that makes it even more compelling when scripture refers to the Orion and the Pleiades (Job 38:31), dinosaurs (Job 41:1-10), that the Earth is a sphere (um,Isaiah I think, not sure where it was) the skin of the tooth wasn't even discovered until recently (Job 19:20) and there's so much more.

"For them, the earth was at the center of the universe and everything else (the heavens) revolved around it." -I don't think this statement can be supported by the Bible.

Don't let the archaic way of writing fool you, God disclosed some gems to His "pens" He used to write the OT.

I'm excited how astronomers, archealogists and other scientists that know the Lord and won't hide the truth are putting together the pieces and fitting them to the revealed Word. It is easily overlooked, but there are things in the Bible no one else knew for centuries.

Did you know that it has been discovered that the fossils in the museums reflect the Biblical accounts of man's age? The skulls were tampered with to in some cases change a young, infant like face to look more like an ape. But when the bones are placed where they should they look like someone who is aging at a vastly slower pace & will eventually be 600-900 years old. The baby teeth are kept for much longer as they would need to be. There's so much being uncovered its just Wow! The protruding of the skulls shows the Biblical age as well being that the bones in the skull never stop growing. You and I would look like "cavemen" too if we lived 700 years.

In a cave in France there was discovered writing so small it would take a powerful magnifying glass or microscope to read it. It was also on a white background, meaning they couldn't have used fire to write it as smoke would have blackened the walls. Their eyesight, like their intelligence was far superior to ours. Only our technology makes us think otherwise. Todays example: puberty is hitting children a year or more sooner than just 30 years ago...quite a leap.

The world is still clueless at this stuff while Genesis has been around for quite some time now. God's Word is much deeper, richer and grander than many have discovered. Don't be discouraged, many men and women of God are rising up with knowledge..yet as we know it is only the Spirit that gives life. Christ will be revealed, whether through the channels of science or things much more simple...He will be glorified.

Godspeed

Hi Dohzman,

I love this topic...practical application of dying daily. Have you ever read "The Release of the Spirit" by Watchman Nee? A short read, very practical. The effect, in my estimation, of the cross in my daily life is to reveal the supernatural, uncreated life of Christ to the world thereby glorifying Him. The Lord brings me into circumstances everyday that brings me to a cross (something so very contrary to my old Adamic nature) I choose (or not)to hand him over so the Spirit can apply to me subjectively what is true of me objectively. Only the resurrection life coming from such an inward crucifixion will suffice. One might ask some, not all, of the old Holiness people that say you must wear a dress and put your hair up and keep the Sabbath etc... what Col.2:20 means to them. There is no power in this mindset to mortify the lust of the flesh...only offering myself as a living sacrifice to be treated by the High Priest (Jesus) /as He pleases/ with the sword that divides the soul and the spirit. If I practice offering myself in those times He will cut and pierce asunder that hideous thing called self. other good reads, "Humiliation" by Gregory Mantle, "Bone of His Bone" by Huegle (sp?), "Born Crucified" by Maxwell, and of course "The Normal Christian Life" also by Nee.

"practical expression that is viewable to the outward eye." I think this is the fruit that glorifies in John 15, it is His fruit to produce. Not quite as easily done as said :-(
Also "Waking the Dead" by John Eldredge is another great help to me, though a little off this topic.

First of all, Bub, the old testament was not written by "GREAT PEOPLE", BUT AS THE WORD SAYS, "AS THE HOLY SPIRIT SPOKE, THROUGH THE MOUTHS OF THE PROPHETS. Remember?? All the hundreds of prophecies about Jesus, His birth, death, and Kingdom???Written by great people???.....The Bible, all of it, was written by God himself..That's Chritianity 101,,to those who have been born again.....,.,.,,,,,,,,..........So, we should move on because science disagrees with the Bible, and oooooh, I cringe in terror and disdain that anyone would lose faith in the church.........You cannot see that just maybe those that say we are the church may not be???....So called men of God SLAUGHTERED...hundreds of thousands of men, women and children during the dark ages, and reformation[ which was simply
Divine deliverance]That was the Church. Gosh, I would hate for people to lose respect!!.......and just for the record,,,,Science had proved, and believed that the world was flat, a few hundred years ago,,,and a "great church" burnt alive a few of their church members for considering it was round,,and it was right there in the bible all along....When Jesus appears as Almighty Creator and Judge, we will see Him as he is. The Bible says, that He will collapse this Universe you speak of, by melting every molecule, to erase every stain of sin and death, and make a new one, after dinner...........God never said to trust in the church, but he did say,[ if you believe that God Yahweh wrote it].....CURSED IS HE THAT PUTS HIS TRUST IN MAN.....The Bible also says, that the earthly mind is an Enemy to God, and will always war against His Holy Spirit, both within and without. God wants you in his Holy Heaven, but believing the Bible was written by man, and that science trumps his knowledge isn't going to help.........MARVEL NOT THAT I SAY, YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN..........WITHOUT HOLINESS,NO MAN SHALL SEE GOD....Tom

Here is an example of what i mean: the flood, from Noah's point of view, covered the whole world. the story was written from this perspective. they could not possibily know what was going on in Australia.

from our perspective, reading this story, to assume that Noah's perspective is the whole truth is to throw context completely out of the story. we would not read any other story this way, but because Christians insist on factual stories instead of the "Parables down to the foundation of the earth" as Christ TELLS US explicitly, they missinterpret the story entirely.

I'm certain there was a great flood of the Holy Lands that destroyed everything there. I'm certain that Noah built a boat and rescued his family and as many domesticated and other animals as they could find (they would need them after the flood)

But when Christians start insisting that the whole world was flooded and there were two of every kind of animal (including baby dinos) on Noahs Ark, then i understand why people dismiss Christianity as a fantastic cultural myth. From Noahs point of view, the whole world was flooded. From Noah's point of view he had an ark that held all the animals he could come up with. Polar bears, penguins, etc. were not on this boat. The logistics are completely impossible. and it doesn't say that God gathered all the animals from the four corners of the earth and put them on the boat.

this is just one example where Christians ignore the perspective of the author completely and insist on facts that were not intended by the author because they insist on literal translations and physical facts from a book that is about our spiritual condition and salvation.

THE BIBLE SAYS IN GENESIS, THAT THE "HIGH MOUNTAINS WERE COVERED" BY THE FLOOD. NOW I ASSUME YOUR SCIENTIFIC MIND UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORT OF THAT. THAT IS WATER, 6 MILES HIGH...ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THE EARTH ROTATES, AND GRAVITATIONAL PULL CREATES SEA LEVEL, OUR BODY WEIGHT, AND OUR ABILITY TO JUMP OVER THE TREES, OR NOT......THAT'S GLOBAL, BUB....EVERY GRAIN OF SAND, EVERY RIVER, EVERY TOILET YOU FLUSH, IS CONNECTED TO THIS THING THAT INVOLVES SEA LEVEL AND GRAVITY. .......I,M GUESSING YOU HAVE IT IN AUSTRALIA TOO??....SO IF EVEREST, K4, AND OTHER MOUNTAINS WERE COVERED,,,YOU THINK THAT POSSIBLY THE PACIFIC OCEAN WOULD HAVE HELD OUT UNDER SEA LEVEL, FOR 3 MONTHS....YOU KNOW, THROWN UP SOME NATURALLY SELECTED DAMS AND DYKES?, TO PROTECT ITSELF FROM GROWING TOO TALL???[EVEREST IS UP NORTH, BY CHINA, BY THE WAY, NOT NEAR EGYPT].....THERE IS ALSO SOME EVIDENCE OF A CATACLYSM THAT SEPARATED LAND MASSES AROUND THAT TIME....AUSTRALIA COULD HAVE BEEN NEXT TO PEORIA[MY BIRTH PLACE]. I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THESE SUPPOSITIONS AND THEORYS..................AND HOW DO YOU KNOW THERE WEREN'T POLAR BEARS AND PENGUINS ON THE ARK? YOU DON'T, BUT YOUR EXERCISING YOUR FAITH TO TRUST YOUR THEORIES, THAT IT 'S JUST IMPOSSIBLE. AFTER ALL, SCIENCE DISPROVES IT. .......AFTER 3 OR 4 YEARS IN THE OREGON MOUNTAINS, A HEREFORD BULL APPEARED IN THE CIVILIZED AREAS WHERE I WAS CRUISING IN MY MOUNTAIN BIKE. HE WAS UP THERE ON A PINE FILLED NOLL, MAD AS A HORNET, AND TERRIFING. HIS HORNS HAD GROWN TO A FULL 6 FEET, HIS BODY HAIR FELL TO THE GROUND, 5 FEET, LIKE A WOOLY MAMMOTH. HIS BODY MASS APPEARED BIGGER TOO. I GAVE HIM HIS WAY ANYWAY HE CHOSE....THE POINT I'M MAKING, THAT THE LORD HAS PUT ADAPTION, FOR SURVIVAL, DEEP IN OUR GENETIC CODE. WHO SAID A SPECIES CANNOT ADAPT...EVER SEE A STRAY CAT, THAT WENT WILD???AND HER KITS AFTER A FEW GENERATIONS....THEY ARE DIFFERENT CREATURES.....DID YOU EVER THINK, THAT FOR SOME TIME, ALL THE CHURCH HAD ....TO FEED ON....WAS THE OLD COVENANT WRITINGS? YIP, POLAR BEARS, KOALAS, TAP DANCING PENGUINS......8 WERE SAVED WHEN THE ARK FLOATED BY, "ON THE FACE OF THE WHOLE EARTH",......AND THE HOLY SEED OF GOD WAS IN THAT BLOOD LINE, JESUS THE CREATOR,,,,,AND ALSO THE GOD OF JUDGEMENT ON A PLANET STEEPED IN SATANIC UNBELIEF, SUCH AS EVOLUTION. ....."AS IN THE DAYS OF NOAH, SO SHALL IT BE ON THE DAY THE SON OF MAN RETURNS, AND SHALL HE FIND FAITH?".............TOM

Tom, you have ignored the point altogether. From the perspective of the author the mountains were covered by water. as far as he could see the whole world was underwater. you are ignoring the perspective of the author who cannot see the whole world, but only has experience of the place he lives (is).

next, Australia. there is clear evidence that the Aboriginies have been living on the island for well over 50,000 years. they were not wiped out by the flood, cause it happened on the other side of the world!

then explain to me how Australian mammals got on the Ark! this kind of ridiculous talk tells me that you aren't concerned about reality or facts.

Bub,

It troubles me the way you see the Word :-( . Do you understand that it is not written by man. It is God's word, therefore man's perspective is irrelevent. Your points about the authors limited sight and knowledge simply do not matter since he is writing what God wants him to. Try and see this. God loves you and wants you to understand. It is impossible for Job who lived thousands of years ago to know that there is skin on human teeth as dentists have only discovered this past century unless God wrote the Bible (please see my other post for verse) It is impossible for Job to know that the earth is a sphere (Job 26:9-10)when it was believed to be flat until the 15th century...unless God wrote the Bible. If you knew all these amazing findings ,and there are many...you could not maintain your perspective without hardening your heart, beloved, that God wrote His book.

"The local flood concept is both theologically and scientifically unsound. As near as I can tell, the only reason to hold to this concept is to gain the acceptance of secular scientists who deny God’s Word. Once an individual starts down the compromise road, one error begets another, until all portions of Scripture which disagree with the secular viewpoint of the day are thrown out."

a quote from one of the sites I posted...go there and research the facts available to us. Find out why so many scientists and astrophysicists are giving their hearts to Christ and submitting to Him as Lord and Master, Creator God. Check out the evidence of the Flood in the Grand Canyon and the Black Sea. Bub, Jesus loves you! He knows the hairs on your head! He knows the hurts and the burdens you carry. Come home.

What is unreasonable brother, is that you fail to see the logic that you are holding the words and thoughts of man above Gods, worshiping the created over the creator.

and willfully refuses to consider the facts written into the Creation by God.

The only fact that I see is that no one can fully explain the workings of God and His meanings. Just because man cannot explain it, does not meant that things didn't happen exactly the way it is said in the bible. You spoke a little on "how did animals in Australia get to the ark?" The answer is, who really cares how they got there, be thankful that they did. Who is to say that God didn't supernaturally bring animals back and forth from different places on the earth? He lined them up together and had all animals, carnivors and herbivors (sp?) sit next to eachother. I think He could work out the details of getting them to and from the Ark.

You are basing your "knowledge" on the word of man, not Gods. If you choose to believe scientific hypothesis and speculation, that is your own business. I choose to beleive the word of God. He doesn't make mistakes.

...i fear will be undermining the faith in the future...

Wrong brother. If you read the bible and believe what it says, you will see that holding the truth of scripture as such is not what underminds people, it is this... soothsayers and teachers that will tickle your ears, and of course the false prophet, beast, etc...

Another verse to read is this in Daniel:

Daniel 4:4-9 (NKJV)

I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. Therefore I issued a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. Then the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in, and I told them the dream; but they did not make known to me its interpretation. But at last Daniel came before me (his name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god; in him is the Spirit of the Holy God), and I told the dream before him, saying: “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the Spirit of the Holy God is in you, and no secret troubles you, explain to me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.

Only Daniel, the one who knew God, could explain the Kings dream. Daniel was a man who believed God and what He said. All the others mentioned worshipped false gods, religions and science over the word of the Lord.

But if one doesn't beleive in the truth, which God says, there is nothing else to believe in, and all that is left is the word of man. I choose God.
