"Unfailing and Relentless Love" My anthem. [Charles Wesley]

sermonindex Mar 23, 2008

This , to date is my favorite Christian poem. I do not know if Brother Wesley penned music with it, or the original title, as I found it in an obscure text somewhere, but it could be my anthem, as it rings so true about my love for Jesus and my often stumblings and failure. I often am broken as I meditate on the depth of mercy in this, and am impressed with the author's knowledge of his cross, and God's cross.

My strength is gone, my nature dies;

I sink beneath your weighty Hand;

Faint to revive, and fall to rise,

I fall, and yet by FAITH I stand.

I stand , and will not let You go,

until I know your name, your nature know.

Lame as I am, I take the prey;

Hell, Earth and Sin, with ease overcome.

I leap for joy, pursue my way,

and as a bounding deer fly Home,

through all eternity to prove,

Your Nature and Your Name is LOVE.

Charles Wesley

Brothertom,

This is indeed a find! :-)

I recognise the last six lines, though, from a collection of verses which are sung as a hymn, beginning 'Come, O Thou Traveller unknown'.

Here is a link to the page where they are more than half-way down in the praise thread. You will see where they would fit in the train of thought, and I wonder if the sixth line you've posted here, is why they are not in the hymn, (as it doesn't fit the meter of the tunes which may be sung). (It's also in cyberhymnal.)

There is another tune, which is suitably doleful in places, but exultant in others, which would carry your words, perfectly, but it's not available online.

How in the world could you have found that? I'm impressed , and thanks. that's it! I guess he had other poetry he drew from, in his arsenal, that wasn't necessarily musical. It sure is moving, isn't it? thanks, Tom.

Hello Brothertom,

Both John and Charles Wesley wrote poetry. It is said there is a verse of scripture (or part of one), for nearly every line of Charles' hymns.

Charles' son Samuel wrote music, some of which is still sung today.

I've sung a few Wesley hymns over many years, and always been blessed by the message that God is love, and wants us to know His love for ourselves.
