The Sparrow

L
Lor_E Mar 24, 2008

If a sparrow falls, Thou knowest it; You see them every one.
How then do You view my case, this life below the sun?
So flighty, and so thrust about, by winds of time and change.
Though seeking to soar high and free, I wrestle simply to rearrange.

My helpless attempts are thwarted, by a single pane of glass, though seemingly clear to me;
My beating heart upon the ground and sore, again, I find myself lying in view of Thee.

Oh, what have I, who beat about, and wrestle heart and soul?
There seems no consolation, my own abuse so whole.
I flop about the dust and search for scraps still left.
I fret as clouds are building and I’ve no confidence yet.

When will the breeze be gentle, when will the sun yet shine;
When will the rains bring softly, the race to run be mine?

Oh, little bird so broken, who knowest not the way,
Look up and see the sun still shine behind the darkest day,
Beyond the grayest sky, the blue sky glistens still,
Hush, listen to the eagle fly, like those who do His will.

A smoking flax, a broken reed, a helpless little bird
All look to Thee to find their help within Thy Holy Word.

Upon the cross of Calvary, sin and darkness all about,
surrounded by the souls of men full of curses, fear and doubt, \t
the cries of bitter anguish, of hate and greed and woe,
The Son of man surrendered to the will of God below,
\tThe sun its face did hide with dread, the birds refused to sing,
\tEarth then began to tremble, like captives knelt before the King
Thy precious Son suspended between the heav’n and earth,
the price He paid for freedom, established every verse.

My life, the little sparrow all crumpled on the ground,
the work of self now broken my wings no longer bound;
Lift me with Thy grace oh Savior, Thy breeze of fullness blest,
Safe in the Holy Spirit where to find Thy peace and rest.
