There must be a difference -ryle

There must be a difference

(J. C. Ryle, "The Gospel of Matthew" 1856)

"You are the salt of the earth." Matthew 5:13

"You are the light of the world." Matthew 5:14

Surely, if words mean anything, we are meant
to learn from these two figures, that there must
be something marked, distinct, and peculiar
about our character, if we are true Christians.

It will never do to idle through life, thinking
and living like others, if we mean to be owned
by Christ as His people.

Have we grace? Then it must be seen.

Have we the Spirit? Then there must be fruit.

Have we any saving religion? Then there
must be a difference of habits, tastes, and
turn of mind, between us and those who think
only of the world.

It is perfectly clear that true Christianity
is something more, than being baptized
and going to church.

I'm assuming this is speaking of water baptism. If one has been baptized with his spirit (born again)(redeemed by his blood)(a new creation)there WILL be more than that. We will also seek to come together for a public professions faith in water baptism, singing psalms, and spiritual songs, making melodies in our hearts in worship and praise to him. For fellowship, discipleship and the hear the preaching of the Word that the man might be throughly eqqipped for every good work. Also for communion, THIS DO IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME". He said THIS DO until I return for the marriage supper of the Lamb. Also to bring our tithes and offerings into the storehouse. Some people may have sickness or not be physically able to attend or for some other reason, and if so he knows the heart and the intents. It certainly doesn't matter what type clothing one wears.
