I had this book in my possession for more than 20 years......never got into it.....last month I picked it up and couldn't put it down.....how I long to know the vioce of the Holy Spirit like those bros and sis......and I will! Rees Howells, Intercessor by Norman Grubbs. This is in my Top Ten, also. God Himself taught this man how to pray. I have learned, from him, that the first prayers in a given direction are the hardest. Once the 'position is gained', future prayer efforts will bear fruit much sooner. (I'm still in the baby stages trying this. Prayer is really hard work.)A theme that keeps running through my favorite books: How God uses cross-denominational conventions and meetings to bring believers further into His Will. With Rees Howells, who was a new believer during the Welsh Revival of 1904-06, The Llandrindod Wells Convention was "the most revolutionary even in his life". He was baptised in the Spirit and became a whole new man. He gave himself over fully to God, and God did mighty things through him. The course of World War II was affected by this man's prayers!I am obsessed with seeing such conventions rise up again. Hudson Taylor and Amy Carmichael were deeply affected by Keswick. (Amy was Keswick's first official missionary.) John Hyde began the Sialkot Convention. That's all I can think of right now, but there are more! Wherever the Lord has raised up men and women of God to set aside a small period of time for Him yearly (4 days to a week), He has blessed those events with His Presence. Hello Ransom, God needs intercessors at this time to change the tide of the world(I am sure they are out there....just don't know anyAnyone who is a devout Christian and has been diagnosed as 'depressed' 'bi-polar' or anything else, please examine your hearts! It may be a call of God to intercessory prayer!! Taking anti-depressants or other psycho-active drugs will derail this call. I believe this is what has happened to many of the Lord's Chosen Intercessors in our day and age. :cry: CAUTION: Do NOT stop taking any prescription medication on your own!! Consult Dr. Peter Breggin's books and articles www.breggin.com then plot out a SAFE course of withdrawl therapy with a sympathetic counselor's help. I highly recommend everything Dr. Breggin has written. He's Jewish, divorced and remarried, yet he knows his stuff about psychiatry and pharmacology. He's a staunch believer in the power of God, working through sympathetic listeners, to heal everyone no matter how mentally ill they are. I'm talking the worst cases, the most mentally deranged, etc. We as Christians know there's spiritual warfare involved, too, but Dr. Breggin brings it down to the basics: "Do we really love these people, and are we willing to touch their lives with real caring and real love?" He denounces the entire psychiatric industry and is the founder of The International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology www.icspp.org . He has taken on the whole medical system, in court. He proves over and over again that children do not need more drugs (like Ritalin, Adderall, etc.), they need more parental involvement. DUH!

To be humilated, to leave his newborn son behind to go to the mission field, to agonize and interceed on the behalf of one soul for months at a time..."The Holy Ghost took me through grade after grade," he said, "The process of changing one's natures (replacing the self nature by the divine nature) was very slow and bitter. It was a daily dying and showing forth the life of Christ, but that life was the life of a victim. Christ was the greatest Victim on one side of the cross but the greatest Victor on the other. The daily path was the way of the cross: every selfish motive and every selfish thought was at once dealt with by the Holy Spirit. hi, the first time i was in len ravenhill's home,we were in his office/library and i asked him what should i read to avoid all the drivil and he said "start with this book for it will encourage you and show you what God can do through anyone" rees howells/intercesser was his first recommendation which he gave me.i have bought it often and given it to others for it changed my life.jimp
"Shortly before they were due to go, Rees was in a meeting in Brynamman, where a young
woman read Romans 8:26-30. She could only read very slowly, which gave time for each word
to sink in: "Predestinated... justified.., glorified." As Rees listened, he said to himself, "I know I
am predestinated according to the foreknowledge of God, and justified -- but am I glorified?"
That puzzled him and the question was constantly in his mind: What does it mean to be
glorified?
Two days later, in the train on the way to Llandrindod, with this thought still before him,
a voice spoke to him: "When you return, you will be a new man." "But I am a new man," he
protested. "'No," came the answer, "you are a child." The others in the carriage were singing the
newest song of the Revival, The Glory Song, but Rees never heard it; he kept pacing the corridor
with that voice ringing in his ears: "You will be a new man."
On the first morning of the Convention the preacher who was perhaps the greatest
expositor on the life in the Spirit that Keswick has produced, the Rev. Evan Hopkins, spoke on
Ephesians 2:1-6: "You hath He quickened.., and hath raised us up... and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus." He pointed out that it was the Risen Lord who had appeared to
the disciples after the resurrection; but when the Holy Ghost came down He revealed the exalted
Saviour at the right hand of the Father. Mr. Hopkins then asked the question, "Have you been
quickened by Christ? Have you been raised up to sit with Him in heavenly places?" In his heart
Rees answered, "Yes, I know I have been quickened, but I have not been raised up with Christ to
that place of power," and the moment he said that, he saw the Glorified Lord. "As really as I had
seen the Crucified Christ and the Risen Christ, I saw the Glorified Christ, and the voice I had
heard in the train said to me, 'Would you like to sit there with Him? There is a place for you,' and
I saw myself raised up with Him. I knew now what it meant to be 'glorified'. I saw Him as John
did in Patmos, and I was dazzled like the Apostle Paul. When He reveals a thing, it is exactly as
it is, it is not imagination. All that night I was in the presence of God and my glorified Saviour"
Howells is speaking the language of the old holiness teachers, that we are glorified in this life or entirely sanctified and without sin and one common thread runs through all of them and that is they all had a supernatural power demonstrated in their lives and NONE OF THEM SPOKE IN TONGUES OR BELIEVED IN IT.
The baptism of the Spirit which charismatics are experiencing is not the same one that men such as Howells experienced and it is a pseudo baptism as it does not produce the pure state as it did in times past.
It is the great deception.
Norman Grubb did not hold the same beliefs as Howells, and neither did many Keswick men and women, they were believing a modified version of deliverance from deliberate sin only which is not the teaching of men like Howells. His teaching is the 3 steps one or the via triplex and the third step is the complete union with Christ. No man is preaching this today and it is the full gospel.

I actually have this book and have read it. I could not relate to it because his life seemed to be one of a lottery ticket winner. Meaning, there aren't many people who literally do that-and to pray 12 hours a day. Really? Is that really a practical? Yet, when I say that I ask myself "has the culture got a hold of you that much that you think such a thing is beyond you (meaning me)?"
I think I may pull this book back out and read a chapter per day just for the spite of it.
Ok. as I said before since this threat came about I decide to begin reading this book again. Only chapter a day unless it is very short.
Having done so I want to bring something up that I find conflicting? Chapter 2 the text talks about Rees almost succumbing to worldy temptation. In this case the invitation to a boxing match. He is reminded of a sermon he heard before he left for America about a cloud a witnesses and such.
My focus is worldly temptation and the boxing match. I know we could probably substitute other things for boxing matches in our own lives but what is making something worldly vs keeping something Godly? The Super Bowl was mentioned in another thread. Is this considered ungodly because God is not praised at all even though you might have some player who offer quick shout outs to God?
How is Rees determining what is ungodly in his life or is it merely a cultural thing? I think to the average person a Godly person is someone who goes to church all the time, prays, reads (supposed to study) the bible and that is where it ends. Yet far out of this circle of doing is considered ungodly?
I also find it eye opening that Evan Lewis, his cousin, confronts him about being born again. This after he had gone to church and to prayer meetings yet he comtemplates whether he has ever heard from God. Does this mean that God used his conscience to direct him in his ways along the way before he was born again?
What do you folks think?
This is a most awesome testimony of a man and his relationship with the Lord.
I had arrived in an empty house, only expecting to stay over night, it was so beautiful, the back yard was a huge meadow surrounded by hills & mountains with wild life I had seen in a while.
There was no tv, internet, radio etc. I slept on an air mattress.
It was me the Lord and Reese Howles Intercessor. I had tried to read the book in the past but the time was not right.
But it was now. I went to sleep reading this book and the Presence of the Lord was so strong, I woke to the Presence of the Lord the same. I read it during the day and had awesome fellowship with the Holy Spirit with no distractions.
It was my time, God's time for me to read it. It was a beautiful time.
Then I got the internet and it seems that some of the Presence of the Lord left. Sad, but true. The internet is a huge distraction no matter how good we use it for.
My point is I guess, is the book is his testimony and no one can take it from him. And God takes us to a book, a book in the Bible etc. that He has planned for us for that time in our life and it comes alive like never before.
May we be guided by the Holy Spirit to be where He wants us to be and not drown Him out.
God bless us all with more of Him and less of us. And if we dont understand it today, maybe we will another day of God's timing.

I just finished the part where Rees goes back to Wales and a revival breaks out. There is a call to intercessors because satan is sifting the saints as some are growing cold. What amazes me is the book tells about the joy of the Lord but then needing the power of the Holy Ghost. This seems to punch a hole in some of the dogma of churches in America. Meaning, it is one thing to be born again but according to the text, and the bible, being born again doesn't give you the power of the Holy Spirit. This is another occurence. So then why is it so hard for so many to accept such a thing? Is it because of denominational beliefs don't accept it or put it together with being born again? Some things to think about.
I also found it bit weird to know that Rees didn't want to be with his wife after seeing his baby for the first time. But then later it was found out that she didn't want the same things as he did at that specific time. I wonder, if this a kind of spiritual warfare where what is of God is mere foolishness in the eyes of the world? And what about Rees having to beg for bread in order to eat? That is a hard thing to accept and yet is there a hidden truth there?
I have read this book off and on. It seems that I am not able to read this book continually. Not sure why except to say that in reading it very slowly it seems I am learning an aspect of God through it?
Thursday morning I was read 3 pages while at the doc's office with my wife. I only made it through 3 pages because the doc office seemed to be very efficient in getting people in and out.
While I read I learned how God will deal with individuals when He calls them to certain things in life. I also learned how He prepares people for a ministry as well as doing it in the context of daily life. Meaning, Rees is working and when work is done He does What God is calling him to do in preparation for full time ministry.
It is my thinking that by reading this thing very slowly it is helping me , little by little, to understand the small nuggets of what God does and what He demands for obedience even in the small things for certain ministries. In Rees' case one of them is the love of food. I had to wonder though, how did eating soup, bread, and cheese twice a day cause him to be healthier than he was before? Is that really a healthy diet?

Gives you an entirely different perspective regarding the victory of World War 2 over Hitler's wicked plans with a team of intercessors praying.
Truly the weapons of our warfare are not carnal!

Sorry, I started a new thread on this by mistake, new at this. Anyway, what I wrote was that I did NOT like the book. I believe in intercession, but his way of doing it was really strange. I could not finish the book, and actually threw a new copy away so I wouldn't pass it on to someone. It seemed strange that in order to pray effectively for someone, he had to feel their pain, even in a physical way. It has been awhile since I read it, so I can't critique it very well.
