If the penalty for sin is to be cast into eternal hell, did Jesus pay the penalty? If so, how?

Or, did Jesus merely pay a ransom for sinners?

Is there a difference? If so, what?

After this elderly man was finished speaking to all who were gathered in this place I engaged him in converse. He insisted that Jesus' physical death alone was the sufficient ransom for those being saved. Consequently, the sins of those being saved are erased by the mercy of God and their penalty cancelled. Those being saved are now freed from the penalty of their sin and may enter heaven rather than suffering in hell when they die. The doctrine of penal substitution is therefore unbiblical.

Is this what the Bible teaches?

If not, what does the Bible teach?

The Bible says that Jesus became sin for us so that we could become the righteousness of God. Jesus recieved the wrath of a Holy God upon His flesh, because God was judging our sinful flesh when Christ was crucified. Jesus paid the complete payment for us to be able to be free from the penalty of sin...which is death,(physical and spiritual). The sin debt was completely paid when Jesus said...
"IT IS FINISHED".
