Many years ago, when abortion was restricted, the economic and social prospects of numerous young woman who got pregnant before wedlock were doomed.
This is an issue that is loaded. On the one hand modern Christians are working to rectify their history by offering unconditional forgiveness to these females with the end result being that more babies are born out-of-wedlock and there is no shame! Least of all any repentance!
In years past - meaning the era of my parents who were b. in 1927 or earlier - couples who fornicated and got pregnant, got married and stayed married. Divorcing was a shame as well as it was to bear a child out of wedlock. So what happened?
Christians have risen to the occasion by establishing Crises Pregnancy Centers as a way to offer an alternative to females who are abortion minded, be they married or single. In the States, if you are single and pregnant there is a ton of government help one can apply for and get. Since the financial burden has been lifted by Uncle Sam (the government) one deterrent has been removed from girls giving their child up for adoption: the government makes it easier for a single girl to parent the child herself.
Then there is culture. You have the female celebrities having babies without benefit of clergy and they get a lot of favorable press so people are finding their resistance to it being worn down to where it is looked at as an unfortunate thing and the church in the meantime gives more money to CPCs.
Church leaders lament the lack of morals among their flock, but are afraid to call it what it is because they have payments to make, after all. They have become wimps, more interested in popular opinion then in God's. So, they just back off and intoduce their flock to some "Purpose Driven" program, hoping the people would see the light. In the meantime homes are being torn apart because of adultery and then divorce....the pill makes it easier for the participants to sin with fewer consequences (spell that babies).
The stats inform us the AB rate among people who consider themselves religious is very high. If no religious folks would abort, there would be far fewer abs in the USA.
Whether it is Dr. Morgentaler's fault (or Dr. Nathanson's in the USA) that abortions have become so easy defies realities. In the USA there was strong political pressure to legalize it because there was money to be made in offering this service. (If you can get a copy of Dr. Nathanson's' book "The Hand of God". He details all this in his book.) Then you had the abortion lobby paying politicians via of donations to their reelection campaigns and it is as they say - the rest is history.
So whose fault is it? It is sin that resides in the heart of every man and woman that has not been dealt with. The devil just found a way to entice people to make a profit from it.
I am not upset am I? The answer is, I am. I have seen too many pregnant singles who choose to parent their child with no thought of ever changing their lifestyle, who experience some guilt but the social pressure to 'do the right thing' is absent because society has changed and no shame is present anywhere. Shame is a deterrent as guilt is to the conscience: a great motivator to sometimes to the right thing when nothing else would.
OK, I will quit...and hold my peace..

PS: BTW, You all might begin to pray for Dr. Morgentaler. Dr. Nathanson has repented of his role in the abortion industry. God can still change folks. You need to read "The Hand of God". But be warned, it is a difficult read until you get 'into' it. It is written by an intellectual for intellectuals. :-)
